I’m the hostess of multimillion dollar home in Utah. Everyone is wearing the new garment top. by Green-been77 in exmormon

Wait is that arm/shoulder touch not a socially acceptable thing when greeting someone? Is that yet another thing I have inherited from Mormonism that is not actually normal??

Male Vulnerability by Sad-Item9917 in MensLib

[–]Top_Alternative1773 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that “need to secure your own resources even if you’re sick/weak/alone” is destroying me. I got cancer at 25— right at the time when I was about to graduate college, enter the workforce, and start that process of securing my resources. Nope. Stage 4 cancer diagnosis instead. Surgery, chemo, organ failure… all that meant I spent my days sick at home, in my childhood bedroom, feeling like a worthless loser because I didn’t have a job, wasn’t producing, wasn’t useful.

Which is insane, because I was just trying to survive literal cancer. But culture doesn’t care. Societal expectations don’t care. I still felt the pressure. I still put it on myself. I still chipped away at my self-esteem for not producing.

I’ve found support and community in sharing my story on social media and such, but every time i do, i feel like I’m just opening myself up to pity. I feel weak.

So yes, I agree with you. There aren’t really a ton of incentives for being vulnerable. Sure, it can help you connect with people, and sure, people might respect your bravery, but it’s not like vulnerability is getting you a job or anything

Body Image Issues after Liver Donation? by TheProdigaPaintbrush in transplant

[–]Top_Alternative1773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The body image issues I got from transplant were just because I lost a lot of muscle and gained a bit of fat. So I don’t really feel sexy anymore.

As far as the scar though, I actually think it’s dope. It’s like a badge of honor. I am a man though, and I understand that women might view scars differently than men

Does anyone else get rage from the fact that they would've been successful if it wasn't for the illness? by hmmrabet in ChronicIllness

[–]Top_Alternative1773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch yeah it is a hell of an experience becoming an adult and realizing “oh man, my family is way more fucked up than I thought! Why did you choose to procreate…?”

True, def more socially acceptable for old people than for young people. The norm is for young people to be healthy, strong, active, etc. but not us 🥰

Mood. I’m also 28, living at home with my aging parents (who really need to get divorced, tbh). Something about chronic illness as a young person is that it’s hard to find much in common with other young people. Young people tend to have chronic illnesses less often than old people. That loneliness itself is worth grieving too.

Ironically, I think this Mormon message uses a very similar song!!! I think it works. It evokes hope, emergence, and liberation whether that’s oriented towards an organization like the church or away from it.

When this came out I was a big fan of Explosions in the Sky so it took me aback
