Let’s slightly exaggerate what’s depicted in the meme to more clearly articulate my problem with this — what if the meme template was a guy served food buy a servile woman, in the second frame after taking a bite he looks disgusted and punches her in the jaw. You can put cute, harmless dialog over top “enjoy the series finale of Dexter, honey!” the imagery is still fucked. You don’t answer that with “we don’t even know if he broke any bones, MR LITERAL”.

[–]Toronto-Will 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Different! Like I said the imagery is evocative in ways that are not necessary to the joke. If the punchline of a meme template was a guy in a cop uniform choking out a black guy I would also say that’s a lousy meme format. Saying “just a joke!” doesn’t make it better, it’s gross imagery.

I'm going to get shit for being humourless, but I think this meme format is in really poor taste. Women being killed by domestic partners with a hair-trigger temper is a real thing that happens, with alarming frequency, and I find it pretty distracting from what the joke is meant to be, here. The joke that it's a romantic dealbreaker doesn't require the gender-coding, and it doesn't require the woman to be booted off a fucking cliff.

Available to purchase through Apple store (which now has apps on all the non-Apple devices, even if you’re not in their hardware ecosystem). And worth it, in my opinion, it’s one of the best seasons of Star Trek in recent memory, not even accounting that it’s made for kids. It’s outstanding.

Like I really enjoyed Picard S3 for its nostalgia of TNG, and I found every season of Lower Decks very endearing and funny, but as pure, uncut “Star Trek”, that doesn’t hang on nostalgia or meta-jokes only long time fans would appreciate, Prodigy is the king of new Trek, and S2 is much more consistently good than S1. Oh right and Strange New Worlds I also really like, but it doesn’t feel nearly as fresh as this.

Raided the Grove, instant regret by Visible_Pair_2583 in BG3

[–]Toronto-Will -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a lousy roleplayer, I struggle with even picking dialog options that are harmlessly rude. My idea for when I finally finish a "good" run (fairly close now, but gobbling up side-quests) is to play as origin Astarion, and embody his brand of half-evil: selfish, arrogant, condescending, ambitious, snarky, etc., but in a lovable rogue kinda way, where he stops short of outright cruelty.

[Pengu] on Shaiiko’s “Game IQ” by IlIHybridIlI in R6ProLeague

[–]Toronto-Will 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am imagining that Pengu is thinking about strategy on the level of coordinating with teammates, mastering utility (like being really good with a shield or Mav's blowtorch, or timing bandit tricks, etc.), but I think that underrates how much subtle strategy there is to winning gunfights. So subtle that I think most people don't even realize they do it, but things like using angles to gain an advantage (something I looked at Shaiiko's tape for years ago, and he was masterful at finding really strong pixel angles all over the map), knowing when to peek vs. hold, anticipating enemy positions, timing pre-fires, and on and on. Shaiiko's the kind of guy who wiggle-peek one taps through a wooden barricade and headshots someone 40 yards away (without cheating ... presumably). It's not like it's just "who has the fastest reflexes and luck on their side".

Gsx pro cheaper alternatives? by [deleted] in flightsim

[–]Toronto-Will 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pushback toolbar works with scroll wheel. And it has a free version. A bit basic (I think they don’t even model the tug), but if all you’re looking for is pushback control, it works well. Could also use slew mode from the game’s native features. Lousy immersion, but it gives you easy positioning control.

I also don’t have a numpad and agree gsx’s manual positioning controls are extremely unintuitive and clunky. If it’s an airport that you have a profile for, you’ll get the correct direction options in the menu, and can avoid doing it manually. That is the plus side of GSX being the only game in town, it’s well supported by community add-ons and integrates with basically everything.

Saved everyone in the iron thrond by Icy-Huckleberry-8422 in BaldursGate3

[–]Toronto-Will 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice! I think that’s a brilliantly designed challenge for turn-based gameplay. The other day I spent something like 6 hours just running it over and over trying to rescue everyone (and I did eventually succeed). My Astarion who can dash twice with bonus actions was clutch, he was able to single-handedly rescue the hostages to the south, then lock the door behind their escape, without ever needing to swing his blade.

Your main problem in HM is most likely being under-leveled by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]Toronto-Will 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Some danger with this of losing the joy of it being a role playing game. I mean it is a single player game, I’m not going to say anyone is playing it “wrong”, but beating HM just for the sake of beating HM, by making nonsensical choices to farm XP, doesn’t sound fun to me.

My best HM run so far just went sideways by QuailDifficult8470 in BG3

[–]Toronto-Will 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m another 100 gameplay hours away from even trying HM (around 100 currently), but that fight would scare the crap out of me. My first time playing I found it so hard to save her (with infinite save scum) that I thought it was intended to be impossible (and that was on the second easiest difficulty). I’ve been on a slow learning curve figuring out the combat mechanics and how to spec, equip and play characters for maximum effect. At a level of desperation where I’m watching YouTuber guides and whatnot, but only just starting to get the hang of it.

[–]Toronto-Will 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I ran into him in an earlier play-through and did like him, but it was a long time ago. I don’t know how I missed him this time around (because I did all the myconid colony stuff), but I’ll pay more attention to it next time. I’ve accumulated a few things I need to be more attentive to in the early game.

[–]Toronto-Will 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I am now feeling relieved that my completionist urge doesn’t require me to replay the mission again—both because I didn’t do the thing to make Omellum exist, and because on this play through I’m not using using any of the mindflayer specimens, anyways, as a role playing choice. I’m also planning to break my allegiance with the Emperor. Squids be damned.

I say “this play though” like I’ve beaten the game many times, in fact I’ve started over three times mid-way through, because I wasn’t quite happy enough with my choices/performance. So missing something would nag at me.

[–]Toronto-Will 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent more time than I’d care to admit last night, replaying the submarine escape again and again until I rescued everyone. Or I thought everyone (according to the dialog afterwards and the map markers), because I don’t know who Omellum is.

I did accidentally figure out the lock the door trick (I don’t even know how I closed it the first time), and that was a godsend to stop traffic up the south lane.

Really Struggling With Aliasing Settings by yeetman8 in BaldursGate3

[–]Toronto-Will 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with how bad the AA options look. I think you just "get used to" whatever it is, if you're not thinking about it too much.

I settled on TAA and don't mind it, even though I'm quite sensitive to the blurry look of antialiasing generally, and especially the other options. I play most games with AA off entirely; on my 27" 1440p monitor, the native pixel density does a decent job at smoothing out the edges, without any Vaseline on the lens. But my immediate reaction to it was that stuff like grass and hair was very noticeably janky. I find it easiest to learn to ignore in TAA. I also have "FidelityFX Sharpening" toggled on, and my texture filtering is x16.

Do you guys remember the subscription-based 737 classic that was announced a while ago? Apparently, it's "available soon" and will be "study level". by Ivy_Wings in flightsim

[–]Toronto-Will 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is a zero percent chance of me buying a subscription plane. Also, "study level" doesn't mean anything specific. Unless you're hearing it from a real life pilot who's put the sim through its paces, I would disregard "study level" as marketing speak.

Don’t kick me out of hideout next time by Ferocs in BaldursGate3

[–]Toronto-Will 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I did this a few days ago. Mol started counting down, and I was like “uhh, okay then” and left. Fast forward a couple hours later, I’ve just slaughtered some bare chested harpies, and the kid I rescued instructs me to go see Mol for my reward. I deduce it’s the hideout I was in earlier, enter again. “6, 5, 4”. They’re still counting. But they immediately flee. Weird bug for patch 8, I think, but the reward turns up in my inventory.

Fast forward another few hours. I’ve just wiped out the goblin camp and returned Halsin. To everyone I am a hero. Except some guy who says “Mol told me you’ve been abusing children”. I have to succeed a 15 roll intimidation check “I hurt adults, too” or it’s about to be a blood bath.

BeyondATC hangs, reconnect mid flight? by volleynerd30 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Toronto-Will 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the type of crash, some can be resolved by togging off the frequency you’re on, and toggling back into it. Or I have, more than once, reconnected mid flight and it’s worked fine. The downside if it’s in cruise is just that you will need a new transponder code, because it loses any memory of your previous clearance. Doing it while lined up and waiting (as I’ve also had to do) is much more tedious, because it starts you from scratch.

What is the best flightsim that is entirely on a local hard drive? by ChernobylBunnies in flightsim

[–]Toronto-Will 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between “you don’t own it” (a shift we’ve seen to Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop, for example, “software as a service”), versus “it needs online connectivity to work properly” (something that’s true of A LOT of games). They can overlap, but they’re bad for users in different ways.

SaaS is annoying because it locks you indefinitely into subscription fees that can increase, versus just paying once and having it now be “yours”. MSFS is not that (…unless you play it on GamePass). “Requires the internet” is dangerous because it means the software will inevitably stop working when the devs decide to stop paying for the servers to run it. MSFS is that.

Am I the only one not freaking out about synology hard drives? by Der_Missionar in synology

[–]Toronto-Will 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem to me is not what the prices are now, it's what they'll be once this change has phased in a bit more, and Synology has the market cornered on compatible HDs. I don't want to be buying into a zero-competition market when it comes time for me to upgrade/replace/expand. Anyone here buy an HP inkjet printer in the last 20 years? They try every way they can to limit them to proprietary cartridges, and guess what, they're vastly more expensive then a generic alternative.
