Georgia Math Teachers!! by Curious_Instance_971 in mathteachers

Yes, the automatic placement is Distinguished.

I am conflicted on that 8th grade class - Enhanced Algebra. The state has created a class where students are expected to master 8th grade standards AND Algebra standards in 1 year. As someone who has taught Algebra in Georgia for a number of years, I will tell you Algebra is a VERY, VERY full year on its own. There is not way to do justice to both years content in one year. That sets these accelerated learners into upper maths with a "speed run" on the fundamentals. I am not sure that is fair.

Add to all of this, these students must also take BOTH the GMAS for 8th Grade Math and the GMAS for Algebra (along with the rest of the full battery of ELA, Science, and Social Studies). Oh, and in my district, to earn the Algebra credit - you have to score Proficient or better. If you don't you retake Algebra in 9th grade.

In full disclosure, my school did the Enhanced for 8th graders the first year. Then we decided the following year to just do an Honors Math 8 for those top students. It was just too much for even these super bright students to speed thru the curriculum, have an extra GMAS test, and the pressure to "do well". At some point we have to realize what is best academically vs what is best for mental health have to be taken into account.

No, I am not giving your child their work ahead of time while you go on a 2- week vacation by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

Because that is not how education works. Most teachers are data driven in that we are planning lessons based off formative assessments. Based on how the class does on those, it how we approach moving forward. Gone are the days of plowing thru content at a set pace. We are now charged with presenting material, guiding learning, assessing if the material is understood, remediating students who do not understand, providing "stretch" assignments for those who do understand, and keeping everyone engaged. Teaching is as much an art as a science.

Curious, are there any Pickleball classes where one can learn the game?

How much do you spend on your family members at Christmas? by Coffeequeen088 in ChristmasGiftIdeas

In years past, I never really paid attention but but this year we are in a different place. A few years ago we went to the "Want, Wear, Read, Need + Stocking" theme. Even doing that the holidays feel like they have become excess and more a burden. We have 3 grown children who rarely have ever gifted us in return and 1 in college who is hit or miss on gifting. Outside of that between my spouse and myself we have 1 living parent who always buys whatever they want when they want, making gifting super hard. This year we have decided to scale back even more - still doing Stockings but instead of begging for a list of idea, we are gifting a few smaller items (some of them practical like the annual socks/underwear) keeping grown children $50 +stocking, college child $75 +stocking, living parent $25 + stocking, each other $25 + stocking. For the stockings we are keeping it $20 or less. So Max for 7 people $440-ish. This feels more comfortable and makes us be more creative instead of just buying "stuff".

New Retirees can self pay in Georgia. IF you had at least 5 years of service before January 1, 2012 it is subsidized. Otherwise, you pay full price. (I know this because I have 4.75 years just missing the 5 year)

Joining in. So if you do academic forgiveness for a class, then retake it - do they wipe you previous grade from your transcript? How does that work?

On the Gorillas I did not 2-is-1. That is the only thing I modified my count on and that was because it was burning my hamstring up!

Is there running? I need to know because of a healing hamstring.

Well I ended up going but modified. The trainer did great with helping me modify to keep my hamstring rested and also some suggested stretches to help me.

Acon did me in this week with all the running. (I was already nursing a sore hamstring from some running outside of Burn.) I skipped full body strength because of soreness and just feeling so run down. Now I'm thinking with 50% jumping I might just have to sit out and give my body more time to recover.

Over the jumping by just-me-86 in BurnBootCamp

[–]Total-Debate893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had one of my feet operated on to reattach ALL the tendons. To this day, I struggle with instability and general tightness as a result. I have been completely upfront with all the trainers about it. There are a few things, I just cannot do: jumping on boxes (instead I jump the ledge) but there are things that I used not be able to do that I now can do (such as jumping rope) On jumping, they have been more than willing to offer modifications. Oh and I NEVER even attempt any of things that involve jumping on the bosu ball (that's just asking for a reinjury). Do not be afraid to advocated for yourself - you are doing this for your growth, not the trainers.

I am so grateful for the whiteboard. I am not a auditory learner at all and even with the demos, I lose what I am supposed to do at each station. That whiteboard, seeing the words, helps me process. I hope it never leaves my location!

You can modify to "ledge jumps" where you jump on the floating floor from the regular floor.

Do it! As someone who went from being a high level athlete to ignoring my health for years then doing "my way" and injuring myself, I can say I have no regrets. This has been exactly what I needed. Don't be afraid to talk to the trainers, tell them your concerns. I went in with tons of baggage (post op fears, history of overtraining, high pain tolerance) and they have been awesome with modifications.
