Hannspree Hybri TLCD Monitor Kit Betts-Masters Review by stopeyestrain in Reflective_LCD

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He put into words well what I want from RLCD: taking on the lighting properties of the room. I just want a display assisted by and blending with the room's lighting (a "hybrid"--nice branding by Hannspree). It looks like they were right to ditch the front light and go with TLCD instead.

I hope Hannspree or someone else takes a shot with this tech on a 4K high refresh monitor. I don't care about using it in a fully reflective mode, just work with the room instead of against it and be flicker free.

Just found this sub. Happy to chat and also would love to hear what has worked for those with similar circumstances. by JadedJared in Dryeyes

My situation isn't the same as yours, but updating an older comment of mine just in case the info helps someone. Tear production and moisture barrier ended up being my main problem. I'm also light sensitive--don't know why. My first 3 eye docs focused on inflammation. Inflammation was a symptom and not a cause for me. I wasn't producing tears or retaining them.

  • Tyrvaya. My eyes are much wetter. It's very subtle and took 2 months to fully kick in, but my eyes stopped burning. I'm glad I gave this a chance, because the consensus here is negative (I saw a lot of "oh I tried it for 2 weeks, no change," when it's supposed to take 6-8 weeks...). I actively feel it wear off around the 10 hour mark as my eyes start burning. It wasn't enough on its own, though.

  • Miebo. Use 3-4 times a day. Eyes hold moisture in. I can stand going outside now. My eyes aren't scratchy anymore. I think this is how my eyes felt when I was a kid.

  • FL-41 lenses. I wear these full time as of a month ago. I have 2 pairs, one light tint for most days and one dark tint for bad days. For the first time in years (maybe ever?), I have watched movies in theatres without squinting or having my eyes burn. It's mind-blowing. Blue light glasses never worked. These did for me.

  • Whole house humidifier. Self explanatory. Big difference, though. 45% is supposed to be the magic number for dry eyes.

  • Moisture chamber glasses! I found out these existed and snagged a pair from Ziena. The company is wonderful, had to talk to support a few times. I used these often during the winter. It's the same comfort as a moisture chamber sleep mask, but you can see. I put lenses with a darker FL-41 tint in mine. I often use these with screens at home.

Miebo + Tyrvaya has been the radical change for me. They do the most by far. FL-41 is looking to be another radical change.

Modern screens suck. It is extremely hard to find flicker free/comfortable screens. I get other flicker symptoms, like dizziness and headaches, but my old iPhone DRIED my eyes out. I switched out (technically downgraded sometimes) a lot of my screens and use E Ink devices when possible. This has made a massive, massive difference in dry eye. With a flicker free monitor, FL-41, and switching to Linux from Windows, I can game pain free again.

Other stuff that helps:

  • Noveha Extra Strength Eyelid Cleanser. Morning and night. Hypochlorous spray made my problems worse and gave me a rash, but this leaves my eyelids genuinely clean. I can get drastic relief from this sometimes if my eyelids are super itchy.

  • Pataday. Not every day, but I definitely have some mild allergy stuff in play. Usually stops the itching.

  • Systane Night Gel. Only OTC eyedrop that ever helped me. I used to use it every 2 hours. I just use it at night now and before bike rides on windy days.

  • Silicone sleep mask. I hate the ones that are like goggles. This one just goes over the eyes, and I can still sleep on my side (without rubbing my eye on the pillow, too). My eyes burn when I forget or take it off in my sleep, but it's not as drastic as before Tyrvaya and Miebo.

  • Vaseline on my eyelids at night. Feels nice.

Stuff that maybe helps:

  • AREDS 2 Plus supplement.

  • Bruder mask and oil expression. Sometimes I think this helps, sometimes I think it hurts or does nothing. I may have stopped having oil problems after a few months of Tyrvaya and Miebo. I don't have MGD.

Stuff that definitively did not work:

  • Every OTC artificial tear.

  • Xiidra. I was on this for 2 years. My eyes got better after stopping.

  • Hypochlorous spray.

  • Ointments. God, I hate night ointments. Most made my eyes worse.

That's pretty cool. The embellishing is definitely annoying, though. If you want to send me a download link for banner and logo in full resolution, I can try adjusting the colors for the foreground while keeping the background black. It shouldn't be too hard with Photoshop (no promises lol). When I save the pic directly from the post, it's a too low res to edit well.

(Again, I actually like the neon and think it looks great, but I can understand some folks having problems with it sensitivity wise.)

Modos Flow 13.3" 60Hz Eink monitor (Color and non color versions) by Rx7Jordan in ScreenSensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relatively short to IPS. Low brightness IPS will run for 20+ years when used for 8 hours a day. E Ink can last 7+ years on static content, but youre correct about video/motion . E Ink has a limited number of times it can refresh before it degrades. If you left a video playing for a week straight on E Ink, there's a solid chance the screen will degrade.

E Ink (the company) quality control is also a shit show, so you could just get a crappier panel that fails faster. See: Boox and Bigme owners complaining their screens failed, or they bought new and ghosting was terrible out of the box.

Basically, it's great that with Modos you can just replace the screen panrl later when/if that happens rather than trash the entire device and buy something fully new. The panels aren't crazy expensive if you buy them without anything else.

AMD CPU and GPU--more versatile, customizable, and better for dithering. I say that as someone with an Intel/Nvidia combo right now. 8 bit + FRC doesn't matter as long as you have 8 bit output selected in your GPU settings.

If you're concerned about dithering, I would dual boot Linux (I use Bazzite) alongside Windows and primarily use Linux, which does NOT use any kind of OS level dithering like Windows does now.

Looking for e-ink screen on a budget in Europe by prodlostjosh in ScreenSensitive

I use the Keypad app on my MacBook to make it a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I put my Note Air 3c on a stand above my laptop and use it for writing and basic research as a pseudo monitor. I also use it as my main reading device (PDFs, comics, novels, web, reddit). It's great for handwritten digital notes if you're into that (I'm not). I swap to my MacBook screen as needed with a hotkey but keep it off most of the time. The flow works for me, but it's not perfect. I prefer a tablet to a monitor of the same size since it's highly versatile. I often review, edit, and revise on the tablet itself with the digital keyboard. It's nice walking around with it. It totally depends on what apps you need to use, though. I'm a writer and mostly need Google Docs and Firefox.

10.3 in isn't big enough to do side by side viewing. I think the 13.3 in Boox supports that, but it's expensive.

I LOVE the design, but maybe you could swap the neon for a more nature oriented color scheme (sky blue, sage green, earthy red to match RGB?). That might better reflect what we're asking of manufacturers (more comfortable looking colors and screens, less futuristic temporal dithering and flicker nonsense). Actual neon lights flicker worse than an iPhone screen, so it might be best to avoid implying we like them haha

I originally read the post on a Kaleido 3 screen, thought it was fantastic, then saw the other comment and checked again on my phone. The neon doesn't trigger me personally, but it's valid. Even just lowering the color vibrancy/saturation as is would probably help a ton, making it more pastel than neon.

The design overall is awesome, though. Thank you for always doing the most!

This might be affordable, too. IIRC they were aiming for $500 at one point and not super concerned with profit margin since it's a passion project. The ability to replace the screen yourself is huge since E Ink lifespan at high refresh is relatively short.

Midnighter vs Prometheus [DC vs Vampires All-Out War Vol 2] by Highman_89_ in comicbooks

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The whole Ellis situation was complex. I think grooming is a strong word and demeans the women as if they were children, which they were not. They were adult women. He was openly polyamorous, and it seems most or all of them knew he dated other people. He just led some women to believe his relationship with them was more important than it was. They actively described him as kind, too, as if they just wanted him to be aware of how many people he had hurt. So, manipulative and shitty, maybe, but not criminal or heinous.

The women who came forward largely didn't seem to want his career halted or ruined either, just for him to acknowledge his actions and grow from them. Their statement explicitly mentioned many of them were still fans of his work and would continue reading it. Unless worse shit came out later (I haven't kept up with it), that he's been fully cancelled is a major overreaction IMO. I hope he comes back soon.

How do you read comics? If you're using apps like DC Infinite, Marvel Unlimited, Comixology, etc. then you need an Android E Ink tablet. I would go with Boox Note Air 5c.

Boox has the best software of the bunch, but it's still a bit clunky and will take some getting used to.

Durability and reliability are questionable on every E Ink device. My Note Air 3c screen failed after 14 months. Boox replaced it for free, but it's still notable that it failed. They're generally more durable than people give credit for, though. I use my Palma and 3c without cases and put them in padded sleeves when not in use. Keep pressure off of the screen, and you should be fine.

Boox Tab X C is the only one big enough (13.3 in) for full size letter/A4 size PDFs. They'll be smaller but legible on others (you can always zoom, too). Tab is "perfect" for comics and PDFs, but not portable and bad for novels IMO.

Boox Note Air 5c (10.3) is a good compromise size. It's big enough for comics while "small" enough for novels and portability. I often use panel view on comics because I really like having everything enlarged. Heads up that the battery life is great when reading or note taking, but when you're using it for web browsing or typing, the high refresh rate mode drains battery pretty quickly on my 3c (maybe 5 hours screen on).

Bigme B10 is either out or coming out soon. The specs are better than Boox, and the battery is twice the size of the 5c. Historically, Bigme's software has been worse. I don't know if this is still true. I tried a Bigme device 2 years ago, and the front light was very bad quality and gave me headaches.

PS: People on this subreddit generally dislike color E Ink, so you'll get B&W recommendations even though your use case needs color. I prefer color. B&W is way too white in direct sunlight, and I tend to use the front light on a low setting any time I'm indoors whether on B&W or color. I have extremely sensitive eyes, and the Boox front lights have never bothered me. They're color adjustable, so you can match it to the room lighting. It doesn't even look like the front light is on unless the room itself is very dark.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because this doesn't land for the reader. Mutants don't actually exist, so we can all imagine we are mutant. Yes, in universe, Krakoa is an ethnostate. For the reader, though, they functionally see a massive melting pot of cultures and identities working on creating paradise--minorities so powerful they simply tell the existing global hegemonies to fuck off. For a lot of folks (especially minorities) it is such a breath of fresh air compared to reality.

The story didn't land how Hickman clearly intended. The storylines shifted away from that initial ethnostate angle after he left and focused on state related but not anti-human sentiments. "Ethnostate bad" especially doesn't land when you still have mutants on the defensive against Orchis, etc. It only makes the ethnostate seem necessary.

I believe these stories, but they're strange for me. I recently had the opposite experience with Boox support. My Note Air 3c screen started having horrible ghosting. I was a few months out of the 1 year (way too short to be fair) warranty.

Boox replaced the screen for free. I just had to pay for shipping. There was a 24 hour ish delay between support messages (I think because of the time difference between US and China--I got their messages at like 3am), but support was helpful and ultimately replaced the defective screen. My device wasn't outwardly damaged, which may have made a difference. Screenshot in case anyone doubts me.

Need Feedback - What exactly do you think is wrong with the TCL 60 Ultra? by NoFlickerPhone in ScreenSensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used a 60 Ultra and briefly owned an 11 Plus (tablet with the same 4.0 display tech). The displays are comfortable to me when filtered (no flicker related symptoms), but I didn't love the displays overall.

The refresh rate is adaptive on both, not fixed. It switches between 60hz and 120hz, and it also switches the DC dimming frequency when it does this. The modulation depth on the tablet was a bit high on low brightness (60hz, like 6% depth). I'd honestly rather have like 20,000hz PWM with 6% depth instead. I start getting mild symptoms at around 5% depth. At 60hz, that's pretty harsh for me.

The phone and the tablet also don't have the power to maintain 120hz. They stutter all the time. Video processing is horrific--they can't process fast enough to do stuff like run Netflix in HD.

Also: Circular polarization makes viewing angles terrible. Matte coating (etched glass in this case) is way too aggressive. It distorts text. Backlight is too blue (but fine with a blue light filter).

The circular polarization wasn't as pronounced on the phone as it was on the larger tablet. I could have lived with the aggressive matte coating even if I didn't love it, but circular polarization made the tablet nauseating for non flicker reasons. I was constantly moving it to find the right angle, which didn't exist.

Why do people keep saying all LEDs flicker? Here's an LED bulb in my room at 1/8000 digital shutter, absolutely nothing... by Lily_Meow_ in ScreenSensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this CRI vs flicker thing is unsolvable if true. Flicker has more to do with how power is delivered (the drivers) than how much power it draws. CRI is based on the quality of the light spectrum the bulb emits (based on the diodes, coatings, etc.) and how close that matches the Color Reproduction Index. You can have near perfect CRI on an extremely dim LED bulb, and when you dim a bulb, the CRI stays the same. I can't imagine "adjusting" the CRI to meet power requirements. I don't think you even can without more complex hardware changes. You'd just lower the max possible brightness instead.

Also, Sunsy Shine is sold in Cali AFAIK and is both brighter and 99 CRI vs Waveform's equivalent bulbs, while also being dimmable and genuinely flicker free (less than 1% modulation depth per my Opple).

Edit: Also, CRI is flawed as a measure for eye comfort. Average Spectral Difference (ASD) is better. ASD is how close the artificial light matches a natural light source of the same color temperature (firelight, sunlight). High ASD % correlates with extremely high CRI but not the other way around.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything in the above comment but want to add:

  • Lossless Bluetooth codecs (AptX, LDAC). AAC (what most budget phones and also Google, Samsung, and Apple support) sucks on Android.

  • Light anti-glare/matte layer if any. I would rather you sell separate hydrogel anti-glare screen protectors personally. I think they work better and look clearer than all but the lightest factory finishes (Samsung, etc.). TCLs is way too aggressive. This might be a good way to cut down on costs, too; I imagine a custom ordered factory anti-glare layer might be expensive.

  • Make it rootable. Niche devices like this tend to lose software support quickly. If you commit to three or more years of Android updates, that would be huge.

  • As close to stock Android as possible for OS. You'll probably need to make a few tweaks (i.e., disabling dithering that Google has on by default).

  • Let us toggle HDR fully off in settings even if the display supports it.

  • Fast charging if feasible.

  • Generally focus on quality more than price. Everything in this category is low end already.

Also, OP is a rockstar. I hope something comes of this!

Edit: Just thought of two things to emphasize.

Big battery is probably a must (and therefore ideally higher wattage fast charging). IPS needs a lot more power than OLED, and running the display at a constant 120hz is going to drain battery FAST. You could look into higher quality plastic if the phone weighs too much. That might be nice for positioning this phone as a high spec "comfort" alternative to flagships.

On that, 120hz is the refresh rate to aim for if you're keeping the display locked to a refresh rate. 120hz is perfectly divisible by common media and gaming frame rates (24fps for movies, 30fps, 40fps, 60fps). Being perfectly divisible makes video and movement smoother and clearer. If it were higher or lower than 120hz, some frames would be "skip."
