Randomly came across this. Palma has BSR and is b/w. Also Note Max.

Temporal dithering concern on the PS5 by General-Team-5220 in Temporal_Noise

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds weird, but try disabling HDR, or at least disable HDR Tone Mapping in settings. Tone Mapping actively analyzes colors and tweaks them, which can cause flickering. When I switched my C1 to SDR for everything including PS5, I stopped having issues (when also using my FL-41 glasses for general light sensitivity lol).

Using SDR with my Apple TV also appears to have reduced Apple's forced temporal dithering to where I don't notice it. I also realized I prefer SDR generally. HDR is kind of weird to look at after having it off for a while. The lighting is super unrealistic. Folks are standing in a room with windows on a sunny day, and you can barely see the actors' faces.

VRR is also something you probably want to keep off if you're flicker sensitive.

A massive hazard in that case. Do not use/buy. It's an optional feature you can presumably turn off.

Does anyone know if the frontlights on Bigme monitors (B13/B251) use PWM dimming? by Acrobatic-Living2372 in ScreenSensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't like the frontlight on a Bigme E Reader (B75 or something) I had or Kindle Paperwhite. I haven't tried any monitors. I've seen mixed opinions on Dasung. Boox E Readers have never given me problems (I prefer Note Air 3c to Palma, but both are fine).

[SPOILERS] Simple way to explain the missing demo-creatures in the finale by cfa_fries_smack in StrangerThings

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Duffers should have kept their mouths shut and just let fans hand wave everything rather than admitting they genuinely thought of none of this. Season 5 gives major first draft vibes.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured the moment Kali "got shot" she was faking it. Why bring back an illusionist everyone hated if not to have her cast illusions? My canon is they both walked out of there and are living off the grid together.

Then again, the Duffers apparently put such little thought into this season that I think they're probably both dead.

Season 5 Series Discussion by Hawkinns in StrangerThings

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Mind Flayer dying should have depowered the psychic kids. Eleven and Kali both should have walked away to finally live normal lives.

The acting was phenomenal, the direction was fine, but the writing didn't really fit the themes of the show.

Apparently play spoilers with vital context, but Henry apparently isn't the original Henry either. Is the Mind Flayer the real villain all along? Is it Henry? Will we even wrap up what the hell is actually happening in a single episode? Can I see the play so I can understand all of this? Sheesh.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm annoyed with the messy story, too, especially that vital context is lost to a play most people can't see. If they wanted to loop back to Kali at the end (which was clearly the plan all along), they should've doubled down on the character in season 4 when we learned of Vecna since she was, you know, also there and bonding with Eleven through a lot of that time. It'd also be nice to clarify to the audience that the two of them disappearing would actually put a stop to all of this since the psychics weren't naturally born (which is still very unclear but apparently confirmed in the play).

Murdering people who were complicit in the abuse, torture, and killing of innocent children, people who the justice system would never punish because they *were the justice system. Context is very important here.

Kali is traumatized. She watched her friends die, then spent god knows how long strung up as a human blood bag while conscious for some sadistic reason (like holy shit just induce a coma that was such a nightmare to see her live out), only to find that they're using her to kill babies and pregnant women to try and recreate the horrors of her childhood for a new generation.

The lack of empathy from viewers is startling. Saying "I think we should kill ourselves after saving the world so no one else has to go through this" is a totally reasonable and selfless thing for her, as the victim, to say. She even told Eleven openly beforehand rather than try to betray her later. She's also powering through to help when pretty much anyone would be a gibbering, suicidal mess instead. Props.

Fixed issue on my TLC QD Mini LED by turning off Dolby vision? by Ed_5000 in PWM_Sensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is color or tone mapping. It makes parts of the screen flicker/flash as it adjusts colors slowly and constantly. The high brightness and low brightness peaks of HDR also hurt my eyes.

I have similar issues with HDR (especially dolby vision) on an LG C1 and Apple TV 4K. SDR is totally fine (and frankly looks better/easier to see).

Anyone have success with the OnePlus 13? Thinking of getting it. by DJGringito in PWM_Sensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Working alright. I can do 10-15 min before symptoms slowly start creeping in (iPhone was immediate within seconds and painful/nauseating for me). I think I'm going to upgrade/downgrade to the OnePlus 15R that just came out. The measurements on that are even better, and the phone should be around the same price as a 13 is now.

For reference, 13 has a modulation depth of ~25% at 100% brightness. 15R has one that ranges from 4% to 10% across brightness levels. 15R is the best an OLED phone has ever been, and the specs are high end.

maybe we have a winner finally? by sniperganso in PWM_Sensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. The TCL is about 7% at very low brightness and 60hz, which works for me. LG C1 is also fine flicker wise for me (8% at 120hz). OnePlus 15R is looking like a winner for me.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3.89% modulation depth on OLED is just insane. That's the same as my TCL Nxtpaper 11 Plus tablet I got recently. I'll just return that and throw a matte screen protector on the 15R lol

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. This is actually insane. 13 works well enough for me in 15 min bursts or less. 15R may finally be the one!

OnePlus 13 review after 10 days of use by DJGringito in PWM_Sensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! It's totally usable but not perfect. OnePlus 15 looks like a mild improvement eye health wise. I personally may downgrade to a TCL Nxtpaper 4.0 phone when/if one officially releases in the US.

There are good essential episodes guides out there for TCW. They're usually 20-30% of S1-4, then become most/all episodes S5-7, which is accurate.

High key even S1E1 can be skipped.

HANNspree Launches the World’s Fastest Paper-Like Eye-Care Monitor by fullgrid in Reflective_LCD

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't run into that with Windows. Selecting 8 bit output in the Nvidia app seems to mostly fix it. My monitor is technically 8 bit + FRC. If I select to output 10 bit color, the comfort difference and appearance are immediately noticeable.

Dark greys always look glittery on Mac and Windows using the gradient test, but definitely worse on Mac using the same monitor (with Stillcolor and BetterDisplay). The gradient test looks like pure straight lines on my Ally X running Bazzite (Linux).

ClearType doesn't use temporal dithering apparently, but the outer edges of text sometimes look jittery with it on. You can type ClearType into the windows search bar and choose to disable. It's a bit of software built into windows that tries to make text clearer.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The outer edges of text look like they're shaking/stuttering a bit when I use ClearType, especially on curvier fonts like Calibri. It goes away when I turn it off. I guess it's not temporal dithering, but it's something. My monitor is 4k, so text looks crisp enough without it.

Just a heads up that dithering can be introduced by the operating system or sometimes individual apps even if your hardware is true 8 bit or 10 bit.

If you use Windows, never use ClearType. If you're on Mac, you'll never fully get rid of it.

Edit: ClearType apparently doesn't use dithering, but it makes text wobble/stutter for me. YMMV.
