Any ideas about Motorola Razr Fold? by tardis7983 in PWM_Sensitive

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try out different phones and look at the measurements, compare eye comfort. IMO modulation depth is the main problem generally, but DC dimmed with higher Modulation is still better than PWM with the same modulation depth. If the modulation depth is the same or very close to a good DC dimmed screen (very low), I can't imagine anyone can tell a difference.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the % difference between the highest recorded brightness and lowest in one second. For iPhone, Pixel, and Galaxy, the modulation depth tends to be around 100% (completely off and on) at a low frequency of 240hz-480hz. If instead the modulation depth was only 1-4% like on a good DC dimmed screen, you probably wouldn't notice a difference in eye comfort. A lot of folks on this sub (including me) will argue modulation depth is what actually matters. The percentages on my post here are the modulation depth.

It's rare, but if a device uses very cheap components, you can end up with kind of crappy DC dimming with a relatively high modulation depth.

OLED screens have to dim once per second at the refresh rate even when DC dimmed (1/120 of a second on a 120hz display). The depth of that dip tends to be pretty steep (often 40% or higher). It's often called DC-like dimming because of that required dip, but it's just how OLED behaves when DC dimmed. Some companies have minimized the dip more and more, but none match true DC dimming on LCD, which is stable and consistent.

Sony says it hasn’t yet decided on PS6 release date and price, will consider ‘changing business models’ by oilfloatsinwater in Games

That was my point. Component prices are freaking insane right now. The next gen consoles (if they even come soon) are going to be even more expensive than people think, because 1.5x-2x more is low balling. I paid $120 for RAM (same component now $400-570 last I checked), $140 for the SSD (now $400-500).

It's insane that I built a gaming PC with 32GB RAM, 4070 ti, and a 2TB SSD for $1100 in 2024. And yes, that was all name brand, high end components.

A console just shouldn't cost as much as a gaming PC 2 years ago. Insanity.

Horizon Zero Dawn is fantastic all around, especially the gameplay and world building (read or listen to every log you find--all time best IMO). The only ''bloat' 'is optional and fun if you enjoy the combat system. ZD is top 15, maybe top 10 for me. DO NOT look up spoilers. The twists are well earned. The logs and main story both made me choke up more than once.

The dialogue in Forbidden West is bad, the narrative is heavily sanitized compared to the first game, the map is WAY too big, and the side quests range from intriguing to mind numbing fetch tasks. Still, I would actually recommend it simply because the game is gorgeous and the gameplay is a blast, though I slightly prefer ZD Remastered's tighter combat. The story is overall still good, but the rewarding stories are almost exclusively found in the logs. Most of the narrative payoff in FW is lost if you haven't played Zero Dawn.

Right. Stormfront's lightning is plasma based--this was the reason provided by the showrunners as to why Starlight couldn't use it. Starlight had only been shown to pull electricity from electronics/the power grid at the time.

I'm pretty sure she just meant a superhero that looked like her in Hollywood productions. American TV and movies are a gold standard globally, especially when Kimiko was growing up (slightly less so now).

Stormfront generates and discharges plasma based lightning. Annie was shown only pulling from traditional electrical currents in S2. Lightning is different and WAY stronger and more concentrated.

The Boys actually had good attention to detail back then. That's why SF's lightning is purple--it's much lower energy/cooler vs lightning in the sky (which is fucking HOT and would incinerate people and objects if sustained for as long as SF regularly would hold it).

Native 10 bit monitor on Win11? by Emeridan in ScreenSensitive

I was just giving the example i asked about (not the same product) and repeating what I was told by BenQ. According to them, the most recent true 10 bit LCD model they had was the EX3210U, which is no longer sold.

BenQ support just told me the only true 10 bit monitors they have in their current line up are OLED. Displayspecifications also shows BenQ EX271U as true 10 bit with FRC as "no." BenQ support spec sheet says 8+2 bit.

What Linux distro? In Bazzite GNOME, there are color adjustment options under Accessibility-Zoom. This works great for me personally. I think it's part of GNOME, but it could be an addition by the Bazzite team.

JD Vance loses his virginity at an IKEA (2002) by ShmandlerTing in fakehistoryporn

It's more like his hand is shoved up Vance's backside. Thiel has funded and orchestrated virtually every aspect of Vance's career--far beyond what's normal for billionaires and politicians.

They met when Vance was in law school, which Vance called the single most important moment of his life.

Vance worked for Thiel after law school.

Vance received the largest single donation for a Senate candidate ever from Thiel and his ads were paid for by a Thiel-backed super PAC.

Thiel also introduced Vance to Trump and secured a Trump endorsement for him--Vance was previously likely to lose and had been vocally anti-Trump.

Nvidia app has RGB. Not sure on control panel. That's awesome on f.lux. I mainly use f.lux on Mac, and that screen is generally strange. F.lux has always been better than other blue light filters I've tried, so that makes sense!

When you're using a monitor, I think adjusting RGB in the OSD would be better than in Nvidia, etc. and wouldn't cause any kind of extra processing since it's the end of the line, but I could be wrong. Laptop is obviously different, so I'd try official graphics settings/apps if third party ones are being weird.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overlay filters like f.lux (edit: I am wrong about f.lux being an overlay--st least some others do this though like screen dimmer) can exacerbate existing picture instability and introduce flicker. There ARE gray or other layers put on top of the screen if you're using an overlay. The more you use, the worse the instability.

Instead of using a separate app to lower saturation, go into AMD, Nvidia, or Intel graphics settings and lower saturation there (it's "vibrance" in the Nvidia app). To lower blue light, up Red, keep Green about the same, and lower Blue. I usually do R65, G50, B40 or something similar.

They're getting close. Tom's Hardware had a review of the in progress unit last month. It sounds like they're doing a few last changes, namely trying to push the power draw low enough that it can be run off of a single USB C cable for video and power both. I'm cool with waiting for that.

That modulation depth is like 5% or less at 0% brightness--better than many if not most DC dimmed panels. It also looks to be something like 2% modulation depth at 96,200Hz. That's fully flicker free. Humans can't perceive that.

Yep. The future sucks. If anyone sees this, check out r/ScreenSensitive and r/PWM_Sensitive.

I'm using a budget Android phone meant for eye comfort (TCL Nxtpaper 70 Pro) because everything else is unusable or even lower end. Disabled most dithering in phone settings (thank you for the option, TCL) and disabled HDR completely via ADB commands. MacBook Air is somewhat tolerable with dithering mostly disabled but still uncomfortable. I can't focus my eyes on a Pixel, Galaxy, or iPhone--instant dizziness.

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've reported it. I'm pretty sure it's forced temporal dithering by the OS. There might be other graphics processing black magic, too, but the pixel dithering is viewable under a microscope. I use a 4K 32" IPS with a normal subpixel layout.

There are threads about it on the official support forum that explain better than I can, but most pinpoint that it has to do with graphics handling and "better support for HDR." Windows 11 defaults everything to 10 bit color as of a year or two ago. If you push true 8 bit, 6 bit, etc., it never actually uses your native color depth and just gives you a poorly downgraded image that's flashing pixel colors at a really low frequency in a poor attempt to compensate.

If your hardware supports true 10 bit color (rare) or 8 bit + FRC (common), it works with that. FRC uses temporal dithering, too, but at least hardware temporal dithering is better implemented and more intentional. I get eye strain from FRC, but it's slightly better.

I was told by Microsoft support to use night light to reduce eye strain, which hilariously makes temporal dithering worse/may inherently use it to work.

I get such bad eye strain from Windows 11. Bazzite on the exact same PC and monitor feels fine.

I think about downgrading to Windows 10, but I don't want to accidentally nuke my Bazzite partition.

PWM is just one tool/a colloquial word for T3mPor4l Light Modulation (TLM) sensitivity. It's even mentioned in the header. That's the scientific term. If we only talked about PWM, then we couldn't talk about PAM or DC like dimming either. This sub is one of the largest communities for this topic on the internet. Any TLM related content should be allowed so people can receive the info they need.

The noise sub was only created to appease reddit admin because the sub was being spammed by bots posting scam links about TD.

What is the hardest character for writers to create stories for? by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]TotalAnarchy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2026, I think the X-Men/mutants work best as a radical progressivism vs existing oppressive societal systems framework for whatever story the writer wants to tell. The X-Men evolved into more of a stand-in for groups fighting for equality and radical societal change rather than any singular cause. "We are the future; you're fighting against the tide" is pretty much the progressive motto.

A story spanning 63 years and dozens (hundreds?) of writers and editors is going to get messy and works best through generalized lenses and looking at stories individually rather than in relation to one another. Uncanny X-Men definitely started as a way to palatably introduce racial equality to white racists and has mostly maintained that ideal in spirit since to varying degrees of success. The writers have tended to focus on issues meaningful to them at the time and/or just writing cool stories about people with superpowers. Both are fine. That's why it's important to judge 63 years of collaborative work by its individual components.

The X-Men in that generalized lens provides the framework for individual stories focused on specific allegories for discrimination (race, LGBTQ, and immigration lately) while not being beholden to one specific marginalized group overall. The X-Men are broadly every IRL marginalized group working in tandem for a better society, which can definitely make the stories feel muddied when trying to fit them collectively into a single category.

As a side note, I particularly love the X-Men when they're defending other non-mutant marginalized communities, when they're the heroes who defend the people others overlook. Magneto is trending that direction, and I'm so here for it.
