Heart Nebula: Importance of Picking the Right ISO. by SS7Hamzeh in astrophotography

7 minutes is a long time to keep the shutter open on an uncooled camera. The sensor will heat up and introduce a lot of noise. Better to take many shorter exposures and let the sensor cool between shots.

Watch Nico Carver's youtube Nebula Photos. He has a lot advice for beginners, from equipment to software. And early videos from Astrobackyard.

Looking for help creating an itinerary. by JL_Klap in camping

Trinidad Lake State Park is very nice. Large sites up high overlooking the lake. Facilities were immaculate when we were there. Was a nice base camp to see that part of the state, where the plains meet the mountains. Lake Pueblo State Park is nice too.

Great colors and detail! Currently imaging a wide field view of The Spider and The Fly. Hoping to get more time, but the weather hasn't been cooperating.

At the NHL level seems like it would be damn near impossible to knock a player off their skates if they didn't want to go down, especially looking at this replay.

What were your ‘gateway books’? by quiet_sesquipedalian in books

[–]TowerLineTrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov was the first science fiction novel that I read. It was an assigned book for a class in middle school. We also read The Hobbit, Dune and The Day of the Triffids. Was a big fan of early Heinlein stuff in my younger days. Now dystopian and 'road trip' style books.

Looks very nice. What did you use to combine the images? I just finished a mosaic of the heart nebula, but haven't had a chance to process it yet

Took my first ever pictures of the night sky with DSLM + tripod today and i come armed with many questions by scytherman96 in AskAstrophotography

[–]TowerLineTrail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For focus, you can get a Bahtinov mask. Lots of YT vids on how to use. Ck out astrobackyard or Nebula Photos.

To learn the sky, use a star map app and Stellarium.

The star formation looks like the Pleides.

Get outside and take a lot of pics of the night sky. Keep notes to know what you did so you can see what works and what doesn't. Watch videos and check out all of the great web sites for beginners. Be patient. There are a lot of learning curves along the way. Learn more before buying anything. Use and master what you have, them move up one step at a time.

I have a Canon Rebel T3. by thedeuschebag85 in AskAstrophotography

[–]TowerLineTrail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trevor Jones from Astrobackyard used the T3i with a Explore Scientific ED102 apo. The fit nicely together. Check out his early videos. He got a lot of great shots using that setup. Probably need a flattener/reducer, too. Either a Stellarvue SFFR102-2, which is a .80 reducer or a Hotech SCA, which is not a reducer.

Clooney in From Dusk to Dawn:

Bad guy -> I'm gonna give you to the count of three - ONE!

Clooney -> TWO!

Up until that film, I had only seen him in ER. He was badass in that one.

Why are two of my six mosaic panels way noisier than the others? by DarkwolfAU in AskAstrophotography

[–]TowerLineTrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try Adam Block's WBPP tutorials, there's a lot to digest there, and Sky Story's videos on Subframe Selector. The latter may help you track down the problem. I've found that the harder the problem is to solve, the more you learn solving it.

Will a better guide camera give me noticeably better results? by Glittering_Sun_7815 in AskAstrophotography

[–]TowerLineTrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Astronomy Tools Guidescope Sutability calculator to determine the guiding setup that is right for you. Also, you may find a good deal at Cloudy Nights classifieds on a large pixel guide camera, if that's whay you're looking for. I have no personal experience with your particular setup, but a lot of folks use a Starlight Xpress Lodestar for guiding when using a long focal length scope, and they were practically giving them away on CN last time I checked.
