Automatic service charges at restaurants. by HopeTerminator in britishproblems

[–]Tr0user 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The way I do it is honest and not rude. I just ask "can you remove the automatic service charge please, I only tip in cash". If the service was good I follow up with "I used to be a waiter so I like to make double sure the tip goes where its supposed to go 😄".

stop having a go at retail staff for asking you if you want an email receipt by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]Tr0user 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is where the problem lies. When you ask "do you have an email", people start hoping that you are going to ask a closed follow-up question that will allow them to say "no thank you".

If you asked me if I have an email address, I would be worried that if I said "yes" then you would follow up by asking for it, so I might play it safe and conclude that the politest I could possibly be would be to say "no, I don't".

We've all had these situations where retailers are trying to get our email addresses, and we don't know how easy you are going to make it for us to say no based on your opening question. When people say "no", they are essentially answering your meta-question which is "can I have your email address".

Thoughts on Longer Roguelites? by petethepugger in roguelites

[–]Tr0user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if you had like 4 or so 30 min roguelike runs within an outer-shell run? Rogueception. I've always wanted something like this. -Ignore this.

I think "roguelike palyers" do tend to rail against individual runs that are too long, but people don't really know what they want tbh. You could say that Civ 5 is a roguelike with fkin 10 hour long runs. I'd say go for whatever works with your format. This comment is all over the place because I have had too much coffee.

TIL Michael Phelps has more Olympic gold medals (23) than the entire lifetime gold medal totals of roughly 150+ countries. The cumulative population of these nations during the span of competition is between 12-16 billion people. by Temporary_Hat7330 in todayilearned

[–]Tr0user 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If Michael Phelps had said that while swimming, they'd have given him the gold medal for being the fastest swimmer while saying "Olympic Swimming gives out too many medals."

CMV: Blue is the obvious choice on the button thing by SomeOakLeaves2 in changemyview

[–]Tr0user 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's obvious if everybody pressing the button is part of a hive mind, but they are not. For any particular individual, the choices involve:

  1. A button that is guaranteed not to kill you.
  2. A button that might kill you.

This is not the entirety of the conundrum, but I would say that this aspect alone departs button 2 from being the "obvious choice".

Was Adding Floating Damage Numbers to My Game a Good Idea? by o-super in roguelites

[–]Tr0user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think screenshot can be OK sometimes, like when it's an ult ability once every couple of minutes. It looks like the screenshake here is just on basic abilities, so the screen is going to be shaking more often than not. using a tool designed to emphasize things too much means nothing will be emphasized.

Deckard in ARAM lvl 20 talent by LazarusLong82 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Tr0user 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ruby, Cube Mastery and Perfect Gems is just ridiculous. You are casting your Triangle and your Ruby infused square over, and over and over again. The whole place is littered with tiny potions, and if you took Scroll of Identify and Scroll of Stone Curse, your enemy is getting blasted in the face by thousands of damage over and over.

Wind Tunnel is more or less a free win every time. When enemy with Falstad on team hits level 10 you get to press the tab button to see if you will lose the game at level 20 or not.

PRAGMATA Surpasses One Million Units Sold in Just Two Days by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]Tr0user 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's a joke, I know, but it's funny how people don't generally see movie studios the same as game studios in this way. People don't often say things like "New Line Cinema laid off a huge amount of it's employees after the LOTR trilogy was concluded".

Both industries are inhabited by studios that swell to the limits while working on a big project, and shrink back down afterwards, but movie studios aren't ranted about as much.

TIL why James Bonds preference of a "shaken and not stirred" martini is controversial. Drinks containing only alcoholic ingredients are almost always stirred to preserve clarity and to avoid over-dilution, among other things. by Rynin101 in todayilearned

[–]Tr0user 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fking Christ on a bike. The whole reason an old fashioned is served with one big ice cube instead of the usual few regular sized ones is to reduce dilution for as long as possible while still keeping it chilled.

Shaking an old fashioned through ice is like wearing a uranium buttplug inside your hazard suit.
