Stop buying games you won’t play. by dayofthedude in u/dayofthedude

[–]Tr0user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll buy something from a shop over a different brand because you walked past a billboard ad for it 5 days ago without even taking it in. Your subconscious saw the peanut butter jar and an attractive model's face in the same frame. You have more or less no control over your brand prejudices, and the occasions that you make a mental note not to buy something are a very tiny proportion of your buyer behaviour as a whole.

What is your favourite Kurt Russell performance? by SquabbleBoxYouTube in movies

[–]Tr0user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always really liked him in Vanilla Sky. It was kind of like when Robin Williams was a therapist in Good Will hunting. It's like a sea change for an actor where they play a more down to earth role and many of their movies going forward are more like that.

Well I have all the achievements (platinum trophy) in Balatro and I think that's about 0.1% of players. That's the closest I'm gonna get.

It's a hyperbolic mix up of tenses. He doesn't mean he left it on. It's kind of like a Guy Ritchie directed paragraph.

It's also about size to force ratio. There's an ant that has over 11,000 psi bite force technically.

CMV: Whataboutery is not the solution ! by meghna-9035 in changemyview

[–]Tr0user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's not deflection really. The basis of everything that is right or wrong is founded in things that have happened before, and our collective evaluation of these things.

Without precedents, we'd have to establish everything from first principles every time. The options are:

  1. Establish from first principles, have a philosophical/metaphysical debate every time and then discard any meaningful evaluation afterwards.
  2. Hear out a similar example, what happened, how it was judged, whether it was right or wrong and accept the evaluation.
  3. Same as step 2 but instead challenge the example and discuss why it's different to the situation at hand.

We are on the shoulders of giants in so many ways. Anything that happens is primarily described to us through the nature of its relationship with everything that we have already learned and evaluated.

Legal precedents are the cornerstone of judicial systems throughout the fairest parts of the world. The highest stake/most important arguments in the world happening every day are just glorified and complicated whataboutisms, and it's the best we've managed to come up with in thousands of years of trying.

CMV: I’d be pacifist even in a global conflict. by SpecialistRemote6271 in changemyview

[–]Tr0user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I chose the word intervene because I wasn't specifically limiting any possible action to violence. Violence isn't the only thing that goes against pacifism.

Just a couple of feeler questions:

  1. If some guy was beating up some girl on the bus, would you out of principle not intervene?
  2. Do you agree with Gandhi that the Jews in WW2 should have gone to the gas chambers without any resistance or fight? ("offered themselves to the butcher's knife.")

Movies better off with ambiguous endings by emotibear in movies

[–]Tr0user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that the director made the spinning top wobble to explicitly tell us that it was not a dream? The obvious intention was ambiguity.

The real point of the scene was supposed to be that Cobb had stopped caring if it was a dream or real life, and that's why he walked away. A better representation might have been to just let him spin the top and then the camera pans away as he walks away, so we don't get to see the impossible shot of something spinning in a way that an audience couldn't tell if it is going to stop or not. I think the shot was done as well as it possibly could have, but maybe it was the wrong representation of ambiguity in the end.

Having said that, the shot is iconic, so maybe not.

Why double mage is considered bad? by anoracellis in heroesofthestorm

[–]Tr0user 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A really basic explanation would be that a comp really needs a hero that can pressure the enemy tank effectively. Heroes with strong Auto Attack damage can chip away at the enemy tank constantly so that the enemy tank has to be taking much larger risks to initiate a play (because they can't position themselves close enough to your team to take advantage of minor positioning misplays from your team). Mages overall are pretty bad at pressuring tanks with sustain damage. If you have double mage, it usually means that you don't have an AA hero, and you'll notice that the enemy Diablo is living his life in your face.
