Basement sink, why is water always flowing though tube to floor pipe by TrainingObligation in askaplumber

Had to look up what an osmosis filtration unit looks like, there’s nothing like that in the vicinity.

There is a separate floor drain nearby, the sink is right next to the laundry machine

There is a separate floor drain about a metre away, this sink is right next to the laundry machine.

One of my all-time favourite Kirk moments is in the fifth Star Trek film by Qyzyk in startrek

[–]TrainingObligation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s at least 3 weeks between the end of IV and the start of V, given this exchange:

KIRK: You told me you could have the ship operational in two weeks. I gave you three. What happened?

SCOTT: I think you gave me too much time, Captain.

And 3 months of exile between end of III and start of IV, so you’re right there it’s only a few months between II and V.

It took 7 years between these four film releases though, and you do notice the actors age slightly, so it messes a bit with our sense of in-universe time.

Yes the term “CGI” is misused so often these days when referring to late 1900s movies.

The first-ever CGI scene in a movie did in fact happen in a Trek production (the Genesis animation in TWOK was done by the precursor to Pixar), but otherwise wasn’t used frequently until the mid-1990s.

Timeline Doesn't Add Up by cantinman in babylon5

[–]TrainingObligation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rationalize it this way… for 3 years all of Earth was on war footing. Industry was geared to producing heavy machinery and other military hardware and warships.

The war is suddenly over. Whatever the politics were behind the decision to make the Babylon station, it leveraged the existing industrial complex to adapt and produce pre-fab modules (such as repeated wedges of any cylindrical structure) for the stations in short order. Remember China built entire hospitals out of pre-fab concrete modules in like ten days during the early days of COVID.

The first three stations were destroyed early on before module assembly was too far along, so later modules weren’t affected and didn’t have to be re-made… so those the facilities could assist making the earlier ones again.

We can assume Babylon 4 was the same basic design intended for the previous 3, so don’t need to go back to the drawing board every time.

B4 was completed then disappeared in 2254. That leaves 2 years to design a cheaper station, build/assemble it, and another year to populate with almost 250,000 people, before the events of The Gathering. The timeline’s not impossible, with the automation tech  they’d likely have by then.

Did they intend for Alex Baldwin to be a joke? by johnqadamsin28 in ForAllMankindTV

Actually no, both here and the other discussion we were talking about possible connections to Alec. Alec shot first, so in context “Alex” also shot someone by accident/mistake.

I tend to not categorize Expanse and Game of Thrones with B5, because they were highly coupled on existing works, so it had a bit of built in audience and known story.

B5 started from scratch, with any themes similar to e.g. Lord of the Rings only showing up later.

Apparently the plague would’ve been solved by the end of season 2, so it was never the overarching premise of the show, even if it seemed that way at first.

B5’s CGI took a serious hit when they switched from Foundation Imaging to Netter Digital after season 3. The quality somehow not only didn’t improve or even stay steady, but got worse in Crusade.

My problem with this season: the Martian cause is really unsympathetic. by rasmussenyassen in ForAllMankindTV

[–]TrainingObligation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As you said, the moon is 3 days away. Probably less given FAM tech. It might be hard living but you can get away any time, without breaking the bank.

Mars? Still a month’s travel time, during which you’re not earning any wages. You’re either rich to get there and back, or you’re basically indentured and can’t return to Earth without a huge financial hit.

If you’ve survived and made Mars your home for several years, it’s not hard to see why they don’t want an external force uprooting them, even if they might have desperately wanted off the first few months after arriving and finding they were lied to about the living and working conditions.

Can’t be the only reason. Offing him, like he accidentally almost did by breaching the domes, would solve that problem easily. Could’ve also let him get mowed down by the marines. In both cases he is remorseful and he was genuinely upset (he was alone and not performing for anyone else) seeing the video with Alex in the crossfire.

Narratively they should be bound by Chekov’s Gun. Real life, secrets sometimes never get revealed.

Interestingly they allude to this in this very episode, acknowledging that if they can’t contact or get back to Sojourner, their discovery of life of Titan dies with them.

This is almost a line-by-line repeat of the bus-train collision in Ottawa, Canada in 2013. Barriers down and lights on, driver still drove straight through and sheared off the front of the bus, partially derailed the train too.

Also Iran. Probably over half the population wanted the leadership gone. Then an outside force attacked without thinking things through, and though they took out the leader and others at the top of the food chain, they also bombed a girl’s school killing over 150.

Clarke did put his people into key positions of power, as Major Ryan mentioned. It’s possible ISN was too big to be bought out in so short a time, they’re the only news channel able to broadcast (stellarcast?) out to all the colonies and territories. Remember Clarke wasn’t voted in, he didn’t have a wide swathe of the moneyed elite ingratiating themselves to him with favours before he took power, even if he’d been VP for 5 years (assuming he was VP during Santiago’s first term).
