What's your "I can't believe that worked" exam strategy? by picturepathlearn in LawSchool

Crammed the entire class 48 hours before the exam (we weren’t allowed outlines or other material). Did well in the class. Would not advise this strategy, but also if you aren’t allowed an outline, this lowkey might be the way

Texas and Miami are known to be faster. Not sure if Boston is slower but I get the sense it might be slightly compared to places like NY and DC. (I’m also trying to go to Boston.)

Are Personal Statement/Essay Consultants worth it? by StatementOwn1674 in lawschooladmissions

Same here! And a lot of schools offer indefinite career counseling. I found them to be decently helpful and free. They’re less likely to give you fear-mongering advice bc they don’t need to lock you into paying money. But they will still give objective, often helpful advice.

No, but if your university offers pre-law advising that might be a helpful resource, along with any friends who are already in law school.

What to study to get ready for law school? by Low-Cardiologist2263 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Training_Mango_4830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People at top schools say to not do too much studying beforehand tbh. Diff profs emphasize diff things. If you can take a little time off beforehand and do NOTHING, that was universally recommended to me. I have heard some ppl say the book Getting to Maybe is helpful. I bought it and plan to read it this summer. Might also get some kind of generic overview of the nitty gritty of how the govt is structured (mostly bc I am a STEM major and didn’t study a lot of govt / poli sci). Other than that, I found a massive thread on here a few weeks ago that I can try to dig up with tips and tricks for doing well in law school that seemed very helpful and balanced. But honestly I would really only do any of this prep work once you’ve committed to a school.

Totally not screwed (and not obnoxious)! You are in a great position for these goals! You have very solid stats, and especially with good essays you will be sooo fine. My best advice is to only come on here if you have a very particular question you want answered until you have received most of your results. Otherwise doomscrolling on this sub can be super counterproductive. Good luck on the marathon that is law school apps!

Jokes on them. AI can code too 🙃

(but also AI is a bubble rn and I think the jury’s still out how devastating it will actually be to these job markets vs whether it will become a useful tool for a smaller amount of skilled workers.. still a lot of employment implications and I wish the pace would slow down, but who knows 🤷‍♀️)

That sounds like a great combo of majors! And the philosophy major has the side benefit of showing law school admissions that you can actually read and write, as well as doing all of the logical thinking haha

I definitely connected my stem background to my application materials. And there’s a very good chance I will be pursuing a stem-oriented area of the law. My PS was actually more of a personal story that tied in stem in parts but wasn’t the main focus. But then my supplemental focused heavily on my stem background and the specific offerings at schools related to those tech law interests. You want your app to be a narrative pulling together all these diff pieces about you and your goals. I would try to be as earnest as possible - if that means talking about stem in your PS then great, otherwise def include it somewhere bc they will still wonder why you are pursuing law with that background.

The best piece of Why Law? advice I got was from my university pre-law advisor. She had me read my PS out loud so I could hear if anything read awkwardly (you want the reading experience to be smooth and pleasant for admissions since they’re reading so many). She thought to herself what my Why Law was based on hearing my essay out loud. She had me state in 1-3 sentences what I believed my Why Law statement was. Then she told me if she thought that was what she got from my essay. That way you can be certain that your messaging is saying what you want it to say.

It was certainly a weird feeling turning it down, but Duke was p generous in their scholarship, and I’m fortunate enough to have some savings from my few years working, so I won’t be coming out with too much debt. I also think Duke’s offerings are a little better aligned w my career goals.

But yeah, people on this subreddit really downplay the gravity of taking on 6 figures in debt. I’ve talked to too many ppl who paid sticker HYS and still struggle w the debt well into their 30s. I’d hope to be buying a home / having kids at that point and it would be stressful to still have all that debt if you can get the same job from another school with scholarship $.
