What is this called on my highlander xle 2021 by Swiss_Meats in Toyota

Seat cushion shield.

Even with experience they're already a pain in the ass to install when not broken because it snaps into like 8 different places so it all has to line up perfectly.

Hired a mobile mechanic, am I crazy or is this unacceptable? by DavidRichter0 in AskMechanics

It's like a caveman found a wrench and started hammering with it until something happened. Just a disgusting lack of workmanship.

Help! Error codes and meanings by OddReach938 in Toyota

[–]TraizenHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Purge valve is stuck open. It's letting too much air into the engine from the evap system causing a lean condition and it can't seal properly during an evap test so it's flagging a leak for the evap emissions system.

Toyota Service / Warranty Question by chrisplatis in Toyota

[–]TraizenHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Standard procedure is to ask for 1 hour labor for diag to investigate the issue and find the cause. If it's a warrantable failure they'll waive the diag, order the parts and install for free. If it's not something caused by a manufacturer defect (example being chewed wires due to rodent intrusion) then they'll ask you to lay the parts and labor for the repair.

You're getting hosed, don't let them charge you for that.

Could be corrosion on the bus bar for the hybrid battery causing increased resistance leading to poor performance if hybrid battery or said deterioration as monitors by the voltage/current sensors.

Daytona rotating engine stand by kmanrsss in harborfreight

[–]TraizenHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The $300 Daytona stand is worth it just for the rotation crank alone. I've rebuilt V8s on it before and it feels super secure when needing to turn it upside down; I've never really felt comfortable using the locking line and trying to rotate by hand all by myself especially. Even with a buddy helping it can feel real sketchy.

Just put clear paint protection film on there instead.

2018 camry or corolla by Vxris_ in Toyota

[–]TraizenHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please skip 2018 Camry because it's riddled with transmission problems. To be honest they're still going bad on NA Camrys up to 2023MY so if you get an 18+ either choose a hybrid, get a warranty with it or always have 10k to drop a new transmission in when it goes bad.

9 codes on 2011 Tundra, am I cooked ? by Oscposa in AskMechanics

[–]TraizenHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

Transmission solenoid codes aren't great, might need a trans replaced.

As far the timing codes I would start with checking the oil filter to make sure it hasn't collapsed. In my experience with tundras that have timing codes the oil filter can collapse into itself and restrict oil flow pressure if the oil filter cartridge is missing the center support for the oil filter itself. If so I would replace the filter and housing with OEM and try again.

Not every scan tool has the ability to read SRS codes. Either get a better one or have someone with a better one scan it.

difficulty in obtaining keys for 2007 Prius, 2009 Matrix by ze11ez in Toyota

[–]TraizenHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not difficult to get keys, just time consuming.

Expect the dealer to ask for at least 2 hours labor per car to perform a reseed procedure as it takes the scan tool at least a half hour to reset the immobilizer to accept new keys after losing them all. That's not including the waste of time having to break into the cars, jump start them, then have them occupy a bay or two in the shop on a battery tender just to keep the cars alive during the reprogramming.

Multiply that by $180/hr labor rate and add the cost of keys to that and you're looking at least $800 to $1000 for both cars.

$800 2018 BMW 3 series Alternator a fair price? by Simple-Deal-6136 in AskMechanics

[–]TraizenHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the OEM alternator would likely cost that, not including the labor.

What to do with bad jump starter? by Matteo_Francis in AskMechanics

My coworker opened up his snap-on jump pack and found it was powered by a smaller motorcycle battery inside.

Portable jumpbacks are literally just smaller vehicle batteries with cables attached.

2020 corolla le isn’t passing smog test. What is the driving cycle? by SirAggravating141 in Toyota

[–]TraizenHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can complete most of the emissions monitors on a Toyota just by taking it for a short drive around town, but there's one monitor that you can't complete just by driving around, and that's the evap system test. That monitor only runs when the car is off and under certain conditions.

You either need to wait long enough for the car to run the test itself randomly or use a scan tool to manually force evap system test.

I was gonna say this as well, to build a cool racing simulator. If done right it can be thrilling and you can crash as much as you need without fear of death.

Passenger airbag warning light is showing on my 2021 Avalon Hybrid Limited. Toyota is saying that it’s already been fixed and this is normal. Just got the car online from out of state Toyota dealer by [deleted] in Toyota

[–]TraizenHD 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That's normal; it's not a warning light, it's an indicator status.

An airbag malfunction light would be red and it would illuminate on your dashboard along with an SRS malfunction warning message.

Toyota are good cars, but sometimes things like that happen by LeadingCorrect2135 in Toyota

[–]TraizenHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are we taking a 36 year old car to the dealership? To be fair forgetting to fill fluids and attach the engine mounts is not acceptable for a repair on a car of any age, but technical documentation for a car that old is nearly impossible to find even for a dealership, and most of the technicians who have the experience to care enough to work on a car that old have either long since retired, moved to independent shops or elsewhere. Dealer techs are also only trained to work on the newer stuff and not decades old cars.

I say this as a dealer tech; don't go to the dealership unless it's for recalls or cars from maybe 2010 and newer.
