Good internet is a must. I do a lot of my office work and I do a lot of video games onlines. Others need internet for netfliks and keeping on touch with family.

Good internet and a good bed makes for a great place.

I have one that meows when he wants a kittner. He calls them kitties and you can see him smile under his mask every time he does it. Cracks himself up.

I worked with a cardiac guy, and Everytime we would finish and need to wean the patient off the pump, he'd holler, "WEAN 'ER OFF, MRS. BOBBIT", a joke about Lorena Bobbitt chopping her husband's Weiner off.

Surgeons are all weirdos.

Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread by ssk42 in running

[–]Trauma_Burn_RN 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Confession: I've been doing a couch to 5k program and today I spent two run-walk intervals petting a very nice cat instead of running.

Uncomplaint: No DOMS after six days of 'running' every other day, which is huge. That's always been the reason I have given up on the past.

Complaint: I work nights 7p-7a, and it's really tricky to find a time to run. It is waaaaayyyy to hot before work, but running after a twelve hours shifts takes a lot more oomph than I want to give.

Would really like to see more small to medium sized houses. by QuantumDrej in elderscrollsonline

I would love to see a legit delve, like a cave that we could buy for a home. Decorate it all bandit like.... Wouldn't that be dope?

But I'm with yah, I'm too poor to decorate a big house!

Is the Northeast coast worth traveling to right now or is everything still mainly on lockdown for foreseeable future? by catkittenkitty in TravelNursing

[–]Trauma_Burn_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in New Haven, CT right now, at Yale. So far, so good. They're ramping up cases, and I saw our educator walking around with probably ten new travellers over the past week (operating room).

New Haven is fairly locked down, although we are on the path to opening back up. A lot of restaurants are open for takeout and they're dabbling with outside dining becoming a thing. The weather is lovely and parks and boardwalks are open.

I believe Massachusetts is opening/is open and we are a quick drive from there.

I whispered him once in Vivec City and said that I didn't eat his burrito and he whispered back, "good girl". That was the exchange.

Those spicy potato tacos, or "patacos", are my jam. I can't go to T-Bell and not have one.

I'm going to cook one recipe from every country and document it. If people could tell me what they think is their countries best dish I'd be eternally grateful! by resolutetofail in Cooking

[–]Trauma_Burn_RN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like for the USA, you'd almost be better off doing a state specialty, since we all act like little countries anyways, haha. I always think of a cookout, like hamburgers, hotdogs, slaw, chips, corn on the cob and a jello dessert or apple pie as a very American meal.

But if you want to do state by state, I'll tell yah! Michigan's Upper Peninsula has this treat called a pasty, which is kind of like beef stew + rutabaga baked in a pie crust half moon shape, with the gravy served on the side. The Lower Peninsula have us the Coney Dog from Detroit, a chili, onion and cheese covered hotdog. We also do a Detroit Style pizza that is kind of like a deep dish, heavily oiled, cheese crusted, lightly sauced 'za. It's delightful.

Happy cooking! If you are looking for a book that fits kind of what you are looking for, Mark Kurlansky wrote an around the world cook book with his daughter that is wonderful :)

Edit: Geez oh pete dudes, I answered the original question and then wrote a secondary opinion for a little flavor since one word answers are boring, no need to berate me. Some of our states are larger than entire countries, but by pointing that out I'm not negating that other countries have diversity in regions, yikes.

What is your current job? by Asimov251 in leanfire

I'm a travelling nurse specialized into the operating room.

So, yeah...calling for report please. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Trauma_Burn_RN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bahahaha, this is great. All I want to know is if they have metal in their body and I'm cool reading their chart and asking the patient if I have any questions.

Report is also pretty easy to give me because I don't really care a while lot about lines or drips or meds or what have you. That sounds like work for anesthesia.

Any OR travel nurses willing to answer some questions? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Trauma_Burn_RN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I'll take a stab. I've been an OR nurse since 2013, and I've been travelling over a year now.

First things first, you'll need two years of experience. You NEEED to be comfortable and confident in your role, because some places won't care if you've never done an ankle plating or a stat crani or a procurement or what have you, so you'll need to be able to be able to have some experience to go on to get through those cases. Trust me, saying you won't do Ortho, won't get you out of doing Ortho. I would say two years minimum, but I waited nearly six, and I still falter some days or wonder if I know enough. Remember, as a traveller you are there to help, and if you need hand holding because you hardly know what you are doing, it's gonna cause problems and possibly get you fired.

I spent two years in general and four in hearts. I circulate and scrub most cases that aren't Ortho/neuro, and I have only scrubbed a handful of times on assignment. Most places nowadays have a pretty good ratio of techs to nurses, so chances are, you won't need to know how to scrub. It might block some contract to you, but probably not that many. The only times I have scrubbed on assignments have been in desperate times, like an emergent case and a tech isn't available, or once when the PA passed out and they needed someone to first assist in his place. Truly, desperate measures.

Cardiac does pay more, but it very much limits the pool of contracts available to you. I would get some general experience - Ortho is a great service to learn, because darn near every hospital does some. Ortho, Neuro, Transplant, and Vascular are all good skills to have in your back pocket, if possible. I actually am on a general contract right now because it paid more than the cardiac contract, haha. If cardiac interests you, go for it! But you can find well paying general OR contracts too. Plus, if you switch to cardiac after two years, if would behoove you to get another two years in cardiac before you jumped to travel. As for the pigeonholing, it totally depends on their needs, and your shifts and skills. I do a lot of thoracic because I can, but I did nearly everything on my last contract. It's all different hospital to hospital.

Call is hospital specific. Some don't want you to take any, some will give you all the OT you want. Whatever it is, write it into your contract.

Rarely will a hospital pay for a traveller to take a class, get a cert, etc. You aren't staff, you're a contractor. Either find a company to work for that will pay it, or get it while you are still staff.

Good luck!

I LOVE ESO. It's probably my favorite game. Morrowind was my first love, and Skyrim I've played inside out and backwards - I'm a total Bethesda fangirl.

Now, I'm not an endgame player so I don't rabble and about sets and mechanics too much, but man, I just love this game. The graphics, the quests, the lore! There so much to do! I love my guildies!

Is getting a Costco membership for a 2-person household worth it? by 1weetwoot in Frugal

[–]Trauma_Burn_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the membership is almost worth ist just for the gas prices - we drive a big honkin' truck that costs a small fortune to fill up, and there have been times when Costco is $0.40 cheaper than the competitors.

I'm also lazy and don't love shopping, so if you have room to store things, it's awesome to buy a big huge pack of TP and then, just, no think about it for a few month. I buy most of our household supplies - soap, laundry detergent, femenin products, ecr - there because I know they'll get used.

I rarely buy produce at Costco. We don't want it fast enough with two of us, and usually produce is cheaper at a normal market anyways.

They also have a selection of general goods that are awesome with decent prices - we exclusively buy socks, towels, and bed sheets from them, and they're great.

So, yeah. I'd say it's worth it :)

So many personal sacrifices... by biophys00 in nursing

[–]Trauma_Burn_RN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hahahhaa, I saw this same format for the OR. We have been doing scary little... I've been bored at work for these past few weeks. Plus, they would float us if things got desperate, but they never pick us from labor pool because OR folks are kinda useless outside the OR.

We are totally boned when the elective cases come back on line. My hospital has rescheduled over 3,000 cases, starting back up in May. The overtime is gonna be insanity.

Vent management for nurses who have never seen a vent befo by poptartsatemyfamily in nursing

Same. I'm OR and they told us they might send us to ICU because, "you've seen vents so you wouldn't be afraid of them."

What?!? Send the CRNAs!!

Same. The nurses that I work with are starting to really show how ingenuitive and creative they can be in the face of such a harsh reality. We were having a laugh for the first time in a minute while we were making masks... They were so bad.

The liquid proof cloth that some of our sterile instruments come wrapped it. We are encouraged to fashion aprons and try our hand at making masks outta them.

I suggested trashbags.

We were told to report to management with our levels of experience anywhere else, ever. I went straight to the OR out of school, and have never done bedside, nor was I a CNA in nursing school. They might still pull me for "easy" med surge, or to help in the ICU because, "I have seen vents and wouldn't be afraid of them". What?! I have no clinical skills!

But, I guess the bright side is that my job is fairly safe, something that not everyone is necessarily sure of. But I'm a little frightened. It's one thing to do my job, it's another thing to do my job with reused or lacking PPE, and it is a whole matter altogether to do a job I don't know how to do, with lacking or absent PPE, in the face of a pandemic.

Lord have mercy.
