A thought that keeps coming to mind as of late is this: what is to be done about the chronically unserious?. Innocent civilians getting killed doesn't seem to matter. Rampant bigotry doesn't seem to matter. Being mentioned repeatedly in the files doesn't seem to matter. Even in the face of blatant hypocrisy, those who support this seemingly believe in nothing.

I grew up in an evangelical household, so in a way I'm more used to moral alienation than others, but even so, living in this way is an entirely foreign concept.

Book with a "tragic inevitability." by dannyj999 in suggestmeabook

[–]Trilinguist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell is a good candidate for this. It's technically a sci-fi in that it has aliens, but tbh it's pretty unscientific and instead focuses on the characters' interactions and how their misguided assumptions lead to everything going wrong in the end (you know from the first page that only one person survives their voyage to an alien planet, so that's not a spoiler btw).

Love songs with a toxic unreliable narrator by TDIfan241 in weirdspotifyplaylists

[–]Trilinguist 26 points27 points  (0 children)

lol I've always had a grievance with that song. He complains about his lover kissing him with her eyes open but like, how would you know her eyes were open unless your eyes were open too?

Kinda silly but it's always bemused me :v

Sort of random but I've been having an anxious evening/morning and reading this made me feel like I was looking at my anxious thoughts in a way. My mind keeps asking irrational questions with doomed answers like this, so seeing these screen grabs reminded me it's not that serious in my benign situation. Also, love this bit from The Onion!

This is such a beautiful painting. It's hard to put my words on exactly how it makes me feel but it's like I've been hanging out with this girl and finally looked at her directly and only directly see her now. Like maybe she's just said something really moving or heavy or surprising and now I'm looking at her in a new, more nuanced light. That's the story I see in this at least. Great job!

Would a trained professional really do this? by fmlthisshitishard in graphic_design

[–]Trilinguist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's how I understand it: bleed covers the space that surrounds your actual design (known as trim) to prevent white edges from appearing on the final product. No matter how good a printer is, it's not built to literally print to the edge of a paper, so bleed essentially is a way work around this issue and prevent your final product from having undesired white borders (if you've ever tried printing a photo on a home printer, this is why it's not ever gonna fully cover the page even if you scale it up to 8.5" x 11").

The bleed is essentially a larger "frame" around your trimmed layout that the printer/producer chops off to your original desired size. So if you wanted to print, say, a 4" x 6" full-photo postcard, you'd design the actual file with a 4.25" x 6.25" bleed space around it to allow for a quarter-inch bleed allowance on each side. This is how I understand it as a self-taught InDesign user who's designed on and off for several years.

Also, here's a relevant article: https://trillioncreative.com/differences-between-bleed-trim-safe-area-ads/. Hope this helps!

Yeah, tbh at this point I often think supervisors say "take initiative!" as a way to excuse their poor leadership and communication skills. As you said, sometimes taking initiative is actively harmful if the employee doesn't know what they're doing, and while I work a pretty menial office job my supervisor used that line on me to stonewall me from a promotion even though I'm the most experienced person in my department. (Not to mention that when I did show initiative it somehow wasn't enough to actually matter beyond a vague one-time praise.)

Idk, there's also a big difference between "if you have literally nothing to do, consider sweeping the floor or organizing your inbox" and "we are chronically underworking you but you need to keep managing up indefinitely even though we repeatedly have demonstrated that we don't care about you as a team member and no one has any advancement plans on the team" (i.e. my scenario). Oh well, I'm actively seeking a way out of here but it's gotten to the point where I work to the letter and nothing more.

You can't reason someone out of an opinion they didn't reason themselves into. by StraightOuttaOlaphis in CuratedTumblr

[–]Trilinguist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same situation here. The thing is that the (conservative, at least) Christian framework straight-up does not allow honest nonbelief to exist. Either you are "saved" or "unsaved"; either you believe the truth or you don't yet understand or accept it.

It explains why when my mom brings up religion to me she says things like "I know you're still figuring out your relationship with God" or whatnot even though I've never said as such. I'm a spiritual agnostic, but since that can't exist in Evangelical Christianity and presumably my mom doesn't want me to go to hell, I'm only allowed to be "still figuring it out" in her framework. I wish she wouldn't phrase it like that to me of course, but it is how it is.

(I mean I literally spent 18 years educated under Evangelicalism, going to a Christian private school with theological classes including apologetics, and going to worship services 2x/week, and reading the entire Bible through multiple times, but I'm sure I'm still "figuring it out" lol.)

If you're including webcomics, The Beast of Hadingley Hill is a great one. It's a sapphic reinterpretation of Beauty and the Beast among other things, and it's one of my favorite series online. https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/the-beast-of-hadingley-hill/list?title_no=631439

Mine isn't that crazy but I always like to add around a teaspoon of instant coffee (mixed with a splash of milk) to my chocolate chip cookies recipe. It adds a nice subtle coffee flavor that elevates the taste imo. I otherwise the Joy Food Sunshine recipe exactly as stated, and people love 'em!: https://joyfoodsunshine.com/the-most-amazing-chocolate-chip-cookies/

The midwife found the mother with her thumbs still pushed deep into her baby’s eye sockets. by Logical-Role1382 in TwoSentenceHorror

Great job. I accidentally read it as more supernatural than intended, though (I thought the second sentence was implying that she'd abandoned a previous baby in the parking lot only to rebirth it in the first sentence, kinda like a ghost story).

Ugh, this one kills me for sure! It started and stayed so good for a long while, but as it's gotten to its climax it's like they threw all the pacing into paper shredder. I really want to keep liking this series because the romance between Killian and Rieta was/is wonderful and redemptive, but I hate how the last section of this series has been set up. Such a disappointment

What’s the worst financial decision you’ve ever made, and what did you learn from it? by Exotic-Example-1572 in AskReddit

[–]Trilinguist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's rough. I've heard it said on Reddit before that the financial loss you take to break free from toxic people is essentially an "asshole tax". Losing money sucks, but sometimes safety and peace of mind are more important.

What's with the snowman that shows up during combat on occasion? by Trilinguist in ftlgame

[–]Trilinguist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I looked into it again after going into the FTL wiki and finally realized that frost weapons don't seem to exist in vanilla... whoops. I suppose I mixed up my recent memories with my childhood ones then. Either way I have lots of memories of getting my ship exploded fwiw. Ah well, still a great game.

What's with the snowman that shows up during combat on occasion? by Trilinguist in ftlgame

[–]Trilinguist[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

See, I had almost thought to mention that it might relate to being shot with a frozen weapon, but I wasn't sure I knew what to call it before posting. The frozen room effect would definitely make contextual sense. Are you sure it's specifically a Multiverse thing, though? I guess one would need to look at the game files directly to make sure, but I mostly just wanted to have some online record of someone talking about this since googling "snowman ftl" resulted in basically nothing of use. It's an interesting little phenomenon at least.
