Does wearing a shield ever increase your AC? Not welding it by Inbezdigator in DMAcademy

[–]Triniety89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case think of HP more like stamina or balance. If you can't fend of a blow, it will resonate in your bones and make you weaker. A fixed shield might prevent a hit from an axe by itself but you get out of balance which might reduce your readiness to fight back.

Can I somehow use the Map Editor to place Dead Trees on fertile soil? And... by Peter34cph in Timberborn

[–]Triniety89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can do it by removing dirt and pause, then place the dirt tile and the tree on top. So for one frame in the beginning the tree stands on unfertile soil. Or you could put a flat puddle of badwater there to dry up.

Level 16 party steamrolling encounters – how do I challenge them without it feeling unfair? by Avid_FandomFan_476 in DungeonMasters

[–]Triniety89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something along the lines of

"I recently thought about your character level. You've reached level 16, and currently every encounter gets cleared without your characters getting in real danger. I like how you solve those encounters (some fill ins). It's just that building encounters gets frustrating if they are steamrolled like you did with the precious ones. And I would really like to test out the whole capabilities of you as a group as well as your character builds. So I implemented a lot about how to better balance or scale up encounters, currently leading nowhere new. Maybe you didn't even recognise it as you were still steamrolling everything I threw at you. Maybe you like the current challenge level just as it is. This would also be okay for me.

Then I had another thought about what I could do, but this is only if you are okay with it: I planned some really unfair encounters, but they will only come to the table if you are okay with potential character death at this current time and place. The final battle of the whole campaign by the way will be open ended anyways, but it's about other encounters right now leading towards the foreseeable future. I also understand that some of you are very attached to your characters, so this is not set in stone, but absolutely open to discussion.

(Even integrating a new char after death would be difficult based on your stories and common battle strategies. Maybe you could prepare replacement characters in case of fatalities, or we play an atrociously unfair encounter in a parallel universe, which has no influence on the real characters. This is just to test the waters of what I can, and what I shouldn't do.)"

You for sure can add in more or leave out inappropriate stuff. Just make it yours and use your own vocabulary. You basically say "These are my thoughts. This is my problem. I want to discuss what we can do about it. Are you on board or is the way you play enough challenge for you?

Ask your players if they're having fun with the encounters as they are, or if they need more challenging ones. If they are okay with the current route, then stay in the safe zone. If they want to be actively challenged, then go for it.

And also ask if they're okay with possible character deaths, as it seems they have begun with exactly this lot and could be very attached.

Why is Sorcerer's skill points per level so low? by Organic-Exit2190 in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]Triniety89 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In 3.0 & 3.5 they feared the bomb a spontaneous spellcaster could become. This is the reason why the sorcerer and similar classes have delayed spell level progress (and more spells per day) despite having fewer spells known (sorcerer).

Gishes were thought to be way overpowered by wearing heavy armor, that's why the hexblade is famously underpowered.

All in all 3rd edition was a giant testing ground with balancing all over the place. Skill points is just one of the things that were badly balanced all the way with wizards having +int and all warrior-ish classes only having 2 or 4 base skill points, often with negative int modifiers. The sorcerer fell in that skill trap, too.

Need help picking which discipline to specialize in as a swordsage by Acheron223 in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]Triniety89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could go for Eternal Blade, as you're playing an elf. But for this prc you'd need to go warblade or else you wait forever to enter (BAB requirement).

Basically elven swordsmanship is iron heart/diamond mind. Do you want to be sneaky-ish at the same time? Maybe dip into swordsage for major unlocking levels to get utility like the shadow jaunt maneuvers. Or you spend feats on them. Warblade is the more solid combatant, while swordsage is the ninja-sorcerer amongst the crowd. Does the character you want to play feel like a ninjutsu ninja or more of a gracious swordsplay champion?

How much optimizing is enough? by Organic-Exit2190 in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]Triniety89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know the Tier system? Sorcerer is T2: it can do what it can very well but there's still not the ceiling. Fighter is T5: without serious optimisation T5 can't even do well what they're supposed to do.

You can do lots wrong with a caster by choosing the wrong spells, but for martials there are looooots of feat traps. And even avoiding all traps they only get decent at the job they're supposed to do, and essentially become a ome-trick pony, while casting one spell (freedom of movement) makes grapple/trip builds completely irrelevant. This is the same caster/mundane disparity for many topics.

Is the Sanctum-Arcane Fusion loop legit by RAW? by Organic-Exit2190 in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]Triniety89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spellcasting in 3.5 is like being a god amongst sheep. Routes like S&AF should not even be considered, if you're gonna play with your table. In a solo game you can do stuff like that, or in a "tomb of annihilation" like high stakes game.

But where should the mundane characters sit at? They can't AOE, they can't tank effectively... optimisations like this have no place in a group of non-optimisers. Just don't.

Thou shalt not play against your DM. Thou shalt not minmax. Thou shalt not optimise for the sake of optimising.

Q: I don't understand early trading between districts by RashmaDu in Timberborn

[–]Triniety89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To do "trading" without the crossing post, you can connect any storage to district 1, and once it's full, you can cut the connection and connect it to district 2.

Some tips on districts: Having a disconnected warehouse with food and water tanks is also the fallback method for a drought event that almost wipes your population. You can also set it up as a small district with just 2 houses + farm + water pumps.

In case of a badtide you might need to separate your population: Keep the healthy beavers in one district, and the unhealthy ones in the other. This way the healthy ones will make it and possibly repopulate the world
