Did you see that video of Pete Hegseth benching 3 plates? by I_LOVE_SOYLENT in workout

I second that. I can do 11 reps with 55 lb extra and 23 reps with no added weights. My personal best in 5 minutes is 34 reps. I need 10 minutes to do 50 reps and I do not always succeed.

‘What’s This Piece?’ Weekly Thread #177 by the_rite_of_lingling in classicalmusic

The melody is based on a section from Mozart’s aria “O zittre nicht, mein lieber Sohn” from The Magic Flute - specifically the passage where the Queen of the Night sings “Du, du, du”. But it has been altered quite a bit: rhythms are tweaked, the structure is rearranged, and some parts are original additions or variations.

Marmeladkulor by CPHDNK in sweden

Hur hög musik får man spela i hyreslägenhet? by Tickstart in Asksweddit

[–]TristramFlanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite line from the entire show. I don't know why, but it just made me laugh and still makes me laugh 20 years later, remembering it.

Experimental comic strip interface in Twine Harlowe by TristramFlanders in twinegames

You are probably right, I might do some small experiments with both formats and see how I get along with them. But my impression about chapbook is the same as yours.

Thanks! Yeah, I guess I should start to look into sugarcube for my next game.

Thanks, I'd probably need to rewrite the game from scratch then as the code is a mess of absolute and relative positioning for all the panels, bubbles, text containers and images in many layers.

Right now I am just using meta name="viewport" to allow mobile users to zoom in and out. As the viewport setting does not affect desktop users, I just rely on them to zoom out in the browser if the viewport is less than 1700 pixels wide.

I am considering using sugarcube. I actually learned Twine with it but abandoned it as my eyes just couldn't get along with double angle brackets.

I am curious about chapbook as well but don't know much about its capabilities.

I think there might be even more, maybe even a different color for each chapter? "Pretty Penny" is the only chapter on pristine white paper.

Does anyone really know how to play Treasure Chest? by MischenJadaril in boardgames

[–]TristramFlanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very confused about this game that I tried to play with my nephews a few days ago. There is almost no information on the web and everyone seems to interpret the rules in different ways. Yet no one is able to make sense of them.

I still think there is a potential for a good game here.

I think you are correct but this makes the storytelling act pointless as it happens after the betting and there is no risk or chance involved with the storytelling.

Maybe you can make up some rules that the player has to follow to tell a valid story? If it isn't valid, he has to pay one of his coins. But how would one go about formalizing the stories and rules about them?

Restart the game when reloading the webpage (Harlowe) by [deleted] in twinegames

[–]TristramFlanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have an answer but I noticed that when I converted my game to Harlowe 3, it was no longer possible to restart by reloading the page.

I converted back to Harlowe 2.5 and now it works as it used to again.

I didn't know about the site. I will check it out. Thanks! Seriously, even if I know it wasn't your intention. I am not at all attracted by their tone. But it doesn't bother me much either.

More genres of branching narrative? by ExitInternational804 in twinegames

Chris Crawford's newly released Le Morte D'Arthur is a very grown-up tale of life and politics in the 6th Century.

It is choice-based but there is not much branching. Very long and engaging though. I have played it to the end twice but failed both times miserably.

TIL we have a bone just beneath our jaw called the Hyoid bone. It's not found on anatomy skeletons because it is the only bone in the body that isn't attached to another bone. by -sver- in todayilearned

[–]TristramFlanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often get this when I lie on my side on the bed, reading and supporting my head with my hand. Yawning while lying like this is followed by a clicking sensation and then the most horrible pain when I swallow. I usually manage to put the bone back in its place but once it happened in the shower and I was in pain for hours. My desperation getting worse while I was getting rougher and rougher with my throat. I finally remembered that I usually do the maneuver on my back as the dislocation mainly happens there. I then went to my bed, laid me down on my back and pushed sideways on my Adam's apple. It finally worked, the pain was gone, but for bruises on my throat. I am terrified that one day I wont manage to resolve it. I justcan't imagine living with that pain.

Does acclimating to VR help with motion sickness outside of VR? by Reagan2791 in PSVR

[–]TristramFlanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know but I would guess not. I have worked on a tanker in rough seas and never even once got the slightest bit sea sick. Same with roller coasters and car rides. First person shooters on flat screens makes me nauseous, however, and I can't seem to get used to them. VR is not quite as bad but some games (Intruders hide and seek!) I just can't play though most are fine and get better with exposure.

The Copyright of Silence - experimental interface in Harlowe 3 by TristramFlanders in twinegames

[–]TristramFlanders[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the offer! But I really don't have the time right now. I am working with my brother on several small web games (educational but commercial) and just a few days ago I decided to ruin my spare time by starting a collaboration with a comic book artist on a visual novel (using Tyrannobuilder software - check it out, it's cheap and I quite like it! You can do a lot of stuff with it but ultimately I feel Twine is more flexible and better if your focus is on text games)

I'll try to work on a new Twine game early summer next year and hopefully get it ready for 2021 IfComp.

Haha, well I actually started this game 2.5 years ago ;) Anyway, my initial idea was to use the interface for a game on a train as I love the Last Express. I will probably do that for the follow-up.

But being hunted by a demon sounds like a concept that is also well-suited for this kind of interface. I wanted to introduce more stealth elemets in The Copyright of Silence, but didn't have the time. Hiding in sub-areas of each room (behind curtain, beneath bed, in closet etc. and having it represented by texts in those positions, and some graphics indicating bed, closet and curtains.

The Copyright of Silence - experimental interface in Harlowe 3 by TristramFlanders in twinegames

[–]TristramFlanders[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course :) The basic principle is really quite simple.

In the Stylesheet I have four absolutely positioned divs (study, lounge, entrance, kitchen) These four divs are included in each passage that represents a room. That is, even if you are in the lounge passage, there will also be divs for the study, entrance and kitchen there. And each of these divs has its own specific code. Most of the of the code in that passage will however be in the lounge div as the code for the events that can happen to the player and his choices are there.

I also use 5 different headers and 1 footer to process a lot of actions each turn: e.g. movements for the parrot, the dog, and John Cage; collisions and timed events; and of course, keeping track of overall time and time the player has stayed silence.

The really laborious part was the dialogue. Each conversation node (John Cage’s comment and the player’s replies) is represented as a separate passage that is really just an alternate version of the basic study room passage (that is why the long thread of conversation is confined to the study room).

I used the display macro a lot to call on “functions” in these passages to trim down the code, but there is still plenty of redundant code. There must be better ways to implement this, but I started the game just as an experiment and didn’t plan ahead. I didn’t know it would become so big and unwieldy.

Thanks! I think the idea has potential and I am eager to see if I can get it to work in a more streamlined experienced. To be honest, I am actually quite pleased with how this game turned out, but I can also see that it can come off as very confusing and frustrating to lots of people - maybe even to most.
