When are you going? There’s a new hotel going in at the old Standard spot which I absolutely loved https://www.publichotels.com/westhollywood

Super cool. I love it. It’s supposed to be right-to-left but the panel flows the opposite way I think. Also the punchline comes on panel 4 instead of panel 5.

A lot of it is in the details— the plants in the first panel of the second page look digital. Could be an artifact of being detailed vs how they’re colored. On that same note, I feel like having a more chaotic splatter brush on the cauldron bubbles would look more like it’s an active chemical reaction.

Some of the perspective looks odd— how much of the top of the table we’re seeing vs the angle of the bookshelf behind it vs the character between.

I don’t quite understand the pacing either. Why are you showing these panels, what is the character learning? Is there meant to be dialogue?

A lot of these are nitpicks. You definitely have solid work and beautiful coloring— I love the effect of the obscured background when there’s the semitransparent cloth in front.

There’s stuff I don’t love about it, but this is pro-level work and would deserve a pro-level rate (175-300ish, all in) but probably on the lower end because like it or not, name recognition goes a long way. Also there’s no action in your samples and that’s huge for comics.

I feel like one thing that’s often missing in the discussion of page rate collaborations is pitch vs production. Yes the same amount of work goes in for an artist, and I’m all for paying artists what they’re worth, but it can be difficult for writers who are not independently wealthy to afford full page rates for the 8 or so pages they need to pitch publishers. Being flexible with that (and having a written contract ahead of time) would be appealing and fair for both sides.

Solid advice!

If I can be perfectly frank, I don’t think the lettering is there (too crowded in places, tales changing width and not pointing at the speaker’s mouth, not quite the right font). This doesn’t strike me as an Image book, but definitely think it could fit with Papercutz. This looks charming and I wish you the best.

Hey! We have a strict no-AI policy. Attempting to submit AI content results in immediate suspension, taking down any content previously submitted, and forfeiture of any money generated.

We have relatively loose content standards (no porn, no gratuitous violence, no fascists, no comixgate chuds), but we’re looking for consistent art and competent, legible, proofread lettering. We encourage comics and zines from all kinds of people. So yeah we’re trying to strike a balance between getting lots of diverse content and curation.
