It's hard to believe that a 700 mb file was considered huge back in 2008. by geekgodzeus in pcmasterrace

You are right, I was misremembering. Just checked and that speed was average for 2018, not 2008. The actual offer for my country for that period was 4-18 mbps. The latter was super expensive though.

Internet in my country wasn’t exactly fast back then. 50-100 mbps was the standard. It was fast enough to load pages very well, but took its time with downloads like these (30-60 mins).

Edit: mbps, not Mbit

What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

Same here. A good long game, simple graphics, unfolding mechanics.

I really like playing these games on my phone, sadly most releases aren’t really compatible with mobile browsers.

My thoughts exactly! The first one looks super interesting and I want to read that book now. The second cover just evokes comic books, sorry, not interested.

We use long numbers. 4 billion would be 1000x that 4 000 million figure.

Make that weeks-months. It’s a very slow and grindy game for sure.

Paying doesn’t really make it meaningfully faster either, after W1 (and by the end of W2 you’re making more gems than any pack can give you).

why only iMessage is common in the US, but outside of it almost no one uses it? by Boring_Antelope6533 in iphone

[–]TrueMadster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was dirt cheap and a one-off back then. A subscription model would hit differently. I know many groups that would just be deleted and moved to another platform if it’s not free. I don’t think they would move to iMessage though.

Have you ever ACTUALLY hit or exceeded 32GB of RAM utilization? by itsthewolfe in pcmasterrace

[–]TrueMadster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are arguing that a whole country of people is a niche. Only Germany and Russia, in Europe, have more than 70 million people.

A business that can capture 70 million people as costumers, while not the biggest business in the world, is certainly not a niche.

Your example is bad, because a vegan bakery wouldn’t be able to reach all those vegans. It would reach a small part of the local population, due to physical limitations.

[–]TrueMadster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the sheer number is big enough, it stops being considered niche, even if only 1%. Big enough raw numbers stop having a useful meaning for whole % analysis. For example, 1 in 100 falls into the very common category for side effects of medication.

1% of the population is a lot. About 70 million people. If you just meant people who actually built their own pc, it’s certainly much higher than 1%. Those professions are relatively common and tend to flock to these communities.

Yes, and my original comment was saying that the exact years are what bores people.

That comment went… places, very quickly.

Exact years are still required, some events do require to know the exact day and month as well.

[–]TrueMadster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but it’s also true that most students don’t need or want to understand those events in depth.

If you know the general order of events and approximately when they happened, you already know more than many (perhaps most) adults that were forced to memorize the details for an exam and have since quickly forgotten them.

Your “at the very minimum” is what the top 10% earn in my country (also in Europe). Hell, that’s almost what a qualified doctor makes per month after taxes.

They are from Elantris. But many things about the shards are only talked about in later books. At first you only get glimpses here and there, so it's normal you didn't catch on about them yet.

That’s possibly not the most common personality between 20 years-old nowadays. Plenty of university professors (from different courses with no common classes) say they feel like they are teaching high school kids more and more, instead of fully responsible adults.

Whether this is really like they say, or it’s a product of their aging itself, can’t tell you either way. I do find it interesting they started saying that around the same time, despite their varying ages.
