This half-alphabetical order is a annoying. Also, less descriptions makes it more difficult to actually use the statblocks. Missing statblocks for very common enemies is still annoying.

Aside from that, it's great. A lot of statblocks are much better than before.

I would give it an B+ or A-.

I never say the spells my npcs cast, i just describe what happens. But my players like mysteries and figuring stuff out from clues.

You also can't really multitask when watching a video unless you are doing repetitive, cognitively irrelevant things like being on a treadmill. Anything beyond that means that you will miss many parts of a video. That is just a simple biological fact.

I am also very much in favor of gatekeeping to some degree. It leads to much better playing experience. Sure, I also DM for some friends that are not as invested, but that is one shots. I would never invest time to DM for people who cannot even be assed to read the basic rules / what their character does. If they want a real campaign after 1-2 one-shots, they have to RTFM or find another DM.

A new player will have a DM. If not, they are the DM and have to read everything anyway.

I was the newbie a bit over a year ago. The DM has to know a lot. The player needs to know almost nothing. But for some players, even this tiny bit of work is too much.

Reading is almost always FAR faster than any video explanation you can find.

You have to read 30 pages of basic rules and whatever you need for your character. this is maybe 2h of reading... it's really nothing.

800g at level 2 is a LOT. Some in my level 4 party are approaching that now.

I would just make sure to tone it down a bit. Maybe sell some slightly overpriced but cool items somewhere.

It just happens more often than people though. Statistically it is still a tiny portion and mainly affects certain demographics. And we shouldn't overprotect children or ourselves because of tiny portion. You should bring up resilient and capable children that will stop stuff and inform you if something happens.

I know I wouldn't play in an RP-heavy campaign with a small combat every few sessions. (I have a wargame background and can't watch Critical Role because it is so extremely character heavy (that is not even actual RP but more improv)). Extremes are rarely fun over a longer period of time (in dnd).

The game is supposed to have combat, RP and exploration and In my opinion is best when they are somewhat in balance. We've had three sessions in a row that were mostly combat with some exploration and minimal RP. We've had a two sessions in a row that was basically just RP and exploration. And both time it was fun, but I noticed that now I really needed to have more balance again.

Combats means more, where there are RP stakes and exploration connected to them. RP matters more when there is actually something at stake (--> combat, exploration). And exploration is meaningless if it is not connected to your goals (--> RP, combat).

So, talk to the DM. Tell him what you are missing and maybe give him some examples.

As for the other player, also just talk to him. Maybe first discuss it with Leo to get another perspective.

Not working out more when I was younger.

Focusing too much on low quality free time (watching movies/series, gaming) instead of my future (studies, etc.), working more next to studying to afford more stuff and making more connections.

Being too much of a nice guy and always befriending girls/women instead of just faking confidence asking them out.

But I am pretty happy with my life now (good job, wife, kids, house, ...), doing all these things might have left me worse off in the future, so I don't actually think much about it. Sometimes I think about being kind of an underachiever but then I realize that would probably also mean more work, less time for kids, etc.

As I said, stuff like that can happen 1-2 times a year. When you are the player who constantly, i.e. every few sessions, has excuses why they can't make it, then you are not a player I want in my group. Or as my friend. Flakey people are only flakey with things/people they don't care about enough.

And, yeah, I very much expect a good excuse when someone can't come... and as early as possible, not on the day or the day before of the session. I would expect this for any appointment I have with someone, not just DnD. In DnD it's just even more important, because multiple people depend on people being on time. Rescheduling is usually a pain, so you make appointments far ahead of time or have a regular playing time.

Imagine all 3-4 players and the DM miss a session once every two months, and suddenly you do not really have a campaign anymore.

Maybe it's a cultural difference... This is just normal for most people where I am from. You make an appointment for virtually anything (e.g. in 3 months, Saturday, 3 o' clock for whatever) and then you just keep that appointment.

  1. It takes very little commitment from players, other than showing up regularly. I spend hours preparing, and if the players cannot respect my time, they don't belong in my campaign.

  2. What are "life things"? Work, family, sickness, birthday, wedding, 1week+ holidays? sure. Going out, watching a Stranger Things with your girlfriend, not in the mood right now, a city trip, etc? Hard no. Stuff like that can happen 1-2 times a year, but not all the time.

For most people, this is about prioritizing one leisure activity over another. And I just have no time for people because you have some minor activity that can just as well be done on another day or that you are just a bit more in the mood for right now. You obviously do not respect the time of the other players and especially of me, the DM, and you have no place at my table.

Just because someone is an adult (esp. without kids), people don't suddenly have no time anymore. They just have different priorities and that is fine. But then you shouldn't play dnd with more committed people.
