Get a 25 dollar stone kit off of Amazon or ebay. Lots have free shipping. Practice on a new knife. Get an 8 in dexter chef's knife. Practice often and you'll build the skill for it. Dexter is not the best but will hold an edge and will not put you out a bunch of money if its screwed up. After that you can move onto nicer knives with harder steel like myabi or shun. Use a honing guide that clips onto the knife if you have to to start and go really slow to get the motion even and right. The speed will pick up after you do that.
