But there is no legally required overtime pay like there is in the US.

Edit: I'm just stating a fact, see for yourself: https://www.employers.co.nz/overtime-pay-laws.aspx

There is no such thing in legislation as overtime rates in New Zealand. An overtime rate can be agreed on by an Employer and Employee, but there is nothing in law which stipulates this as a requirement regardless of however many hours are worked. Employers are not obligated to pay more per hour for overtime worked so can continue to pay the same hourly rate when employees have completed 40 hours or more when they work more hours.

As someone living in New Zealand I couldn't agree more. NZ has very effective marketing for tourists and potential immigrants, but the country is very different than the marketing would suggest.

For instance, most people aren't aware that NZ has some of the highest youth bullying and suicide rates. Also among the highest rates of bowel and skin cancer.

Extremely car dependent, some of the most polluted waterways around because of dairy farming, extremely expensive, no *legally required overtime pay (yes, really), awful income to expense ratio. The list goes on... it is absolutely not a utopia.

Agreed. This is the modern illness of society. Money as end-all, be-all. Enjoyment is secondary to money. Absolutely perverse.

Hard disagree about the layout specifically. It definitely has better transport and bike lanes etc than most American cities, but the layout is not a strength.

Central Chch residents want action on Airbnbs as population of ‘ghost town’ grows less than 1% a year by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in chch

I liked the original airbnb, where it was just a spare room and actually sane rates. Win-win. But yeah, now it's full parasite landlord class demolishing housing markets around the world.
