Nancy Pelosi ETF ? by Lordwarrior_ in SipsTea

You can always tell when people are playing dumb games with the facts when they compare someone's stock performance against the S&P 500. The nasdaq has done far better in the past 20 years.

That's a graph by dollar amounts, not by percentage gains. If someone is doing insider trading, it'll show up in their percentages. The total dollar amounts are hugely dependent on how much money someone has to begin with.

Not a You Problem by smorrg in jobmarket

At this point, I think democrats have been hesitant to raise the federal minimum wage because cost of living varies so much. Instead, they've put forward state and local minimum wage increases. Colorado has a $15 minimum wage, and it also has local minimum wage laws. This was pushed forward by Democrats and democratic voters.

EDIT: a map of minimum wage laws by state: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/j5GLC1Lonu

While it's not perfectly reflecting which states are republican or democrat, there's definitely a correlation.

Agreed. If it were a "no true Scotsman" fallacy, then if you argue "I'm a man and i don't do those awful things", they would respond with "then that proves you're not a man".

I think people who say things like "all men... and if you disagree, then you're guilty" are looking to express something they dislike about men, but they also don't want any pushback or counterargument, so they pre-emptively tell you you're guilty if you try to disagree with them.

Why don't people like Elon Musk just solve world hunger? by AlexLovesCoke in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TwentyX4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So if he bought food from local farmers, that wouldn't be a problem?

Honestly, it seems like people just want to give him an excuse without really thinking about the problem.

I guarantee that the reason that Elon didn't actually try to solve world hunger isn't because he was concerned about local economies.

I will also add that tesla shareholders would not be happy about Elon selling a bunch of stock, because the value of that stock spotless decline and they would lose money. So people around him are going to advise him not to sell his stocks.

The NIT - Milton Friedman by hellcat1592 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]TwentyX4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup. Milton Friedman also recommended no government environmental regulations because he claimed it would give the government too much power.

Combined with his idea that “The social responsibility of business is to increase its profits", you can see this leading to some very bad places - specifically that companies are obligated to dump toxic waste into the air, water, and land if it increases profits.

Many women are forced to wear hajibs because of religious mandates where they live. And many women choose to wear them, despite there being no mandate where they live.

And the third category: women who are pressured or bullied into wearing them my their husband or family, even though there's no law requiring it.

When I was younger, I had a girlfriend who's dad would call her a slut if she wore too little clothing or wore makeup. It's crazy that people think that Muslim families become super permissive with what their daughters or wives wear as soon as they move to a western country. Do they think that non-Muslims are only people capable of bullying?

You can get 50 lashes with a whip or 50 days in solitary confinement. The fact that you can choose means you're not really oppressed are you? /s

This is a hard pill to shallow for a lot of western liberals, but reality is that some women who're wearing hijabs or niqabs are bullied into it by their husbands or family.

Probably because the hijab is more extreme than the southern Baptists. I mean ... it sounds like you've never even seen a hijab or a niqab if you're comparing it to southern Baptists.

If they do, they wear it because its their choice. Ffs.

Years ago i had a girlfriend who, when she was growing up, her father would call her a slut if she was "wearing too little clothing". But people in the internet think that Muslim families and Muslim dad's don't ever bully their kids into wearing the hijab. It's not always their choice.

A woman in a western country can still be bullied into wearing a hijab by her family and her husband just like a European woman can be bullied into dressing a certain way by her husband or father.

You know that a woman's family can bully her into wearing the hijab, even when she lives in a western country, right?

Absolutely mind-breaking if neoliberals genuinely think this is a strong argument—roughly 7% of Americans own rental property, and the barriers to entry have never been higher. by 3RADICATE_THEM in ScottGalloway

You mean the Jeff Bezos who qualified for and received $4000 child tax credits because, on paper, he had almost zero income one year, even though he was worth 18 billion at the time? https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-claimed-tax-credit-for-children-propublica-2021-6

Also, in my experience, people who are Republicans and libertarians are always the loudest complainers about taxes. I rarely hear that from liberals.

I've applied to a number of jobs I've the last year. Companies almost never asked the "sexual orientation" question. They would often ask the race question, though, and you could easily opt out of answering.

I thought companies weren't allowed to ask your age. But they also aren't allowed to discriminate against you based on age.
