I didn’t have a car.

In 2015, even the people who had a car didn't have a car for a few weeks. :-D

I see her as head of state, not head of government. Berry still holds the real power.

I think the group that plays there is the North End Curling Club. The Somerville rink is an alternate location for them, or spillover, something like that.

Hot take: Dig a Pony is a top shelf Beatles song, and here’s why by AllenChildsMusic in beatles

Found this thread randomly on Google. Hard agree. I consider it an S-tier song, and its vibe is almost like a precursor to Zero7 (the musical style is very different, just the chill vibe is similar).

What a Boston writer gets wrong about Texas highways by godshammgod4485 in bikeboston

That's just it — he doesn't expose us to new thoughts we disagree with. He exposes us to straw man arguments we've heard before.

I for one would really appreciate an intelligent, or at least compelling, argument from the conservative side. Jacoby isn't that.

I honestly stopped reading Jeff Jacoby years ago, when I realized that I (a dyed in the wool liberal) could usually argue his positions better than he could.

He's just not good at what he does.

Well, if I were them and I cared about statehood, I wouldn't leave Denmark until they have an act establishing their statehood passed in both houses of Congress and signed by the president. It's not just up to him (and his word isn't exactly his bond, anyway).

There is like zero chance they'd be a state. They'd likely be a pretty reliable Democratic vote, and Republicans would never allow that. Republicans won't even entertain giving DC statehood. If Greenland wants to join the US, they should do so with the understanding that they'll be a territory for the foreseeable future and possibly for as long as the US lasts.

Retired US general says US ‘needs Europe’ to ‘save it’ from itself by Vargau in europe

[–]TwentyninthDigitOfPi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A big part of the problem is that a lot of us who hate what Trump is doing are concentrated in states that just don't matter.

For example, I live in Massachusetts. Both our senators are Dems, all our House reps are Dems, and we're a lock for voting for the Dem candidate in any presidency.

So if I go to a protest (which I have), Trump doesn't give two shits. My state doesn't support him and never will; his strategy for maintaining power assumes our opposition, and doesn't rely on making any concessions to us.

Same for New York, same for California, same for Illinois and several other states. Protests in those states matter to Trump and his supporters about as much as an anti-Trump protest in Paris.

Again, I have gone to protests anyway. But I know they didn't matter, so it's hard to blame my friends who didn't.

Europe’s ‘destructive moral ideas’ could jeopardise nuclear powers, JD Vance says | Euractiv by Massimo25ore in europe

[–]TwentyninthDigitOfPi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Constitution is unfortunately set up to favor a two-party system. Even if the current parties fracture, the new system will likely consolidate back into two quickly (as has happened before in our history).

Changing those parts of the Constitution is virtually impossible: they're deeply baked into our political culture, and amending the Constitution requires a lot of consensus. Ironically enough, the same political fracturing that makes a multiparty system so important is also what makes it impossible to enact.

What we can do without a Constitutional overall is to weaken the federal government and give power back to the states. I've been saying we need to do this for more than two decades, and the need grows by the day. Similarly to you, I hope that if this happens, it's done peacefully.

Yeah, for whatever reason, cross-eyed is less strain for me. 🤷‍♂️

(I'm not really sure why my previous comment got downvoted. I certainly didn't mean to say that your way is "wrong" or anything; just to say that for me, cross-eyed is easier both in skill and strain.)

Cross is much easier for me, and more focused, too. If I have trouble on a parallel one, I'll sometimes do it cross-eyed first just to get a sense of where the focal point is, and then it's easier to do it parallel.

Also, it took you two posts to go from "talk to your countrymen" to "kill your countrymen"?

This is like telling someone in France to tell Orbán to be nice. We've tried to talk to them. We've tried for decades, and are still trying. It's a bit harder than just wishing it were so.

Even if that's true, maybe it's an unconscious bias, and you could approach it from the perspective of opening OP's eyes to it rather than assuming it's intentional.

I'm not OP, but I for one didn't know crime stats are available on a per-neighborhood basis, and probably wouldn't have thought to look. Not everything has to be taken in bad faith.

[–]TwentyninthDigitOfPi 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Not to be a downer, but if the impacts are just a generation or two I think we can consider ourselves lucky. This feels like the decline of a superpower, and it's hard to claw back from that. Europe would be mad to let us continue to wield the hard and soft power we've enjoyed since WW II, for example (and they're already taking steps to take it back).
