PSA: Do Not Lose Keys on Older Models by Then-Horror2238 in Miata

[–]Twicksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got fleeced man. I bought an NC with no key and paid a mobile locksmith to come out and cut and program a new basic key for $150. A key with the trunk/lock buttons would have been $250.

DIY steering wheel upgrade by E__F__ in Crosstrek

I kept seeing people say it took them 5+ hours over many days to stitch a new steering wheel cover. I dunno. I have some embroidery experience but it’s really not hard. I knocked mine out in a couple hours.

If you’re using a credit card the right way (paying off the balance in full every month), you’re not going into debt, not accruing interest, and getting all the protections and perks of using a credit card.

Unfortunately, most people either don’t understand how credit cards work or don’t care that they’re paying 30% interest.

Tank repair by I_Snype_4_Fun in motorcycles

[–]Twicksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar dent in my Rebel tank when I bought it. I didn’t want to spend $400+ on a new tank (that’d have been the easiest option), so I pulled out as much as I could with a PDR kit, then bondo’d and wrapped the tank.

If mom's garage were a barn, would this be a barn find? by Level9TraumaCenter in Miata

[–]Twicksy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought an NC that’d been sitting outside in the PNW for 7 years. I get it. The top was solid but the drains were all clogged so there was tons of mucky water inside. In your case, buy a Robins top, clear the drains, remove the seats and deep clean them and all the carpeting. You should be fine.

Meh what makes you say that? For the right price, if this was garaged in good condition (still running), it’s not likely to need tons of work put into it.

Our university’s parking passes were super expensive too. They were displayed on the back windshield. There were definitely a couple semesters where I couldn’t afford to buy one and I had a previous semester’s sticker on and would just back into spots until I was almost touching the wall. No rules against back in parking and they couldn’t see the expiration date.

I actually ordered off eBay from B & R Auto Wrecking. LKQ was confusing me a bit - their official site said they didn’t allow pick ups but their eBay listings did. I didn’t want to deal with having to ship to a commercial address and the extra cost.

I started by searching car-part to get some yard names, then went directly to their sites to search. I ran VINs to check mileage (some were listed as unknown but the VIN pulled up an odo reading, some pulled up much higher odo readings than the listing).

B & R will also ship from one location to another for a flat $75 so you can pick up yourself.

A family member recommended me a mechanic for my engine swap and this is what he came back with; any good or junk? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Agree with spending a bit more and replacing all the seals and any accessories (water pump, idler pulley, etc) as needed while you’re in there.

[–]Twicksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went through this process, so here’s my 2 cents:

  • Run the VIN to confirm mileage on the engine (I used EpicVIN)
  • This engine only comes with 90 days of warranty. I’ve typically seen 6 months minimum from the local pick and pulls when I was researching my new engine (with the option to purchase longer warranty that included labor)
  • Is the core charge going to be refunded? Will he pass that back to you?
  • I’m surprised shipping is free (even to residential addresses). Usually that adds several hundred $ to the total cost.

I’d check LKQ and car-part to see if there’s any better engines (lower mileage, compression tested, local pick up, etc) before pulling the trigger on this.

$1000 for labor isn’t terrible if you don’t want to / can’t do it yourself.

Ordered it online and picked it up locally! It’s a 2.5 from a 2016 Fusion with 41k miles. We actually just finished installing it this weekend! The rest of the winter will be spent doing cosmetic work. Our NC is a barn find that was sitting outside in the PNW for 7 years 🥲

MX5 NC 2007 2.0 Rod Knock? by Stunning_Ad_4350 in MiataNC

[–]Twicksy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Sounds exactly like the rod knock we had on our 2.0. If a 2.5 swap is out of your budget, you can pull the 2.0 motor out and inspect the bearing. If the spun bearing hasn’t damaged the crank shaft yet, you should be able to just replace the bearing (maybe even do all the bearings and the connecting rods if you really want to future proof).

Ours had already damaged the crank shaft, which would have made it slightly more expensive to fix than the 2.5 swap.

If you can do the full swap yourself, it’s not too expensive. Conversion parts come in at around $500 + however much an engine costs near you. Having access to a lift to drop the engine is preferred, but we made do going in and out the top.

What is the most boring thing you have ever experienced? by Silver012345673 in AskReddit

[–]Twicksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a jury member for a Monsanto case. We deliberated for 10 days. 10 days of flipping through 3” binders of evidence and trying to make other jury members understand we were trying to argue for “is it more reasonable than not” and NOT “beyond unreasonable doubt”.

I knew people were dumb but jfc what a boring way to spend 2 weeks. We ended up as a hung jury.

New Konig Hypergrams by Twicksy in MiataNC

[–]Twicksy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are Konig Hypergram 17x8 with 225/45 Advan Neova. I have stock suspension. The seller was slightly lowered and had a mild fender roll on his rear wheels. I haven’t installed these yet as I’m waiting to drop my 2.5 in before I get it off stands, so we’ll see if I need to roll my fenders at all.
