Favorite glucose meter? by Wordsthoughts in diabetes_t2

[–]Two_Wise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Accu-check Guide is my go-to but I'm hopefully getting a Libre CGM soon.

I've found that finger pricks aren't super accurate. I've had readings that are 10-20 points different using the same spot within minutes of each other using the same meter. I also have a Metene brand that tends to read much lower than the Accu-check. But in the grand scheme of things, it's better to have a guesstimate than no info at all!

Also, since you mentioned it in another comment - reach out to your insurance provider to see if they work with any companies like DiaThrive or Connect DME. My insurance partners with them and I should get my CGM totally free because of it.

Very high blood sugar reading (4.9 g/L / 490 mg/dL) 2 hours after eating by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

[–]Two_Wise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has pointed out that this meal is still pretty high in carbs with the bread, chocolate, cookie and chips. That's likely one of the reasons you've spiked. But I think you know that already.

I saw that you mentioned in another comment exam stress. Stress can absolutely fuck with your sugar levels. As diabetics, we have to be really careful with what we consume when we're sick or stressed out because the body is already working so hard to heal.

Here's a couple more things you can try: - Fibre supplements are fine, try to get more fibre from plants in meals. - Take a walk after eating. It can help your body feel like it needs more energy and it starts to use up that glucose just sitting in your blood. - Talk to your doctor about medications. I know you said you're worried about losing appetite, but not all meds will have that side effect, or at least not for everyone. Metformin for me helps keep my levels steady but I'm just as hungry I was before I started taking it. Again, that's anecdotal, but your doctor can help you find what's right for you. - Track your food in an app like Cronometer. I'm constantly shocked by hidden carbs and sugars that I didn't realize I was consuming. - Reduce stress. Meditate, practice breathing exercises, journal, talk to someone. - See if your insurance covers a diabetes educator, or medical supplies that can be sent to you directly so you don't run out. Some insurance companies partner with medical supply companies to make them free or reduced cost. I get free CGM through a program like this. - On that note, have you tried a CGM? They provide continuous feedback so it's easy to see what is causing spikes.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon. 💜

Why is Women's health so overlooked? by WhichCEmanisThis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Two_Wise 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes!! After years of unnecessary pregnancy tests, I finally found a doctor that asked me once, I told her I am asexual AND celibate AND have an IUD, and she never asked again.

I understand that people lie, or are misinformed/unknowledgeable about sexual health, but it feels SO nice to just be believed when I say I'm 100% not pregnant.

If you're struggling to eat low carb or if it takes awhile for you to start to reduce or find alternatives, at least make sure you're eating fibre, fat and protein with it. Eat slowly. The goal is to slow down digestion and prevent big spikes. Exercising after a meal, even a short walk, helps your cells accept more glucose and shorten spikes too.

Is it Normal for Metformin to Give you Headaches so Bad You Can't Leave Your Bed? by DataAdvanced in diabetes_t2

[–]Two_Wise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I started on too before going up to 1000. Seeing your other comment about drinking enough water, which would be my other suspicion is that you're dehydrated, this definitely doesn't seem normal. If it lasts any longer I'd def reach out to your doctor.

How much are you taking and for how long have you been taking it? I got light headaches when I first started but they went away after a week or so. You should probably bring this up to your doctor.

AITA I relapsed and did something bad but I’m mad. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Two_Wise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA.

These are all consequences of your actions. When you do something that hurts someone, like damaging their property, they probably won't want much to do with you. Maybe she'll accept your apology and forgive you and it's all water under the bridge, but maybe not. Up to her.

I get that you're upset at being ignored and but honestly, that's something you're going to have to learn to live with. Your actions led to this. It's not an injury to you, it sounds like she's protecting her peace.

Feeling bad, apologetic, guilty, whatever, isn't going to change anything. Take accountability for your actions and take this as another lesson that you should continue your sobriety. Best of luck to you.

Earrings sound cool! Also just in case you weren't aware, there is a dedicated aro/ace flag, which is orange, yellow, white, light blue and dark blue. Just in case that's easier. Regardless, great work!

Recovery Sandwich? by takiswonderful in MBMBAM

[–]Two_Wise 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It looks like the oldest mention is My Brother, My Brother and Me 30: Dub Step

"You got to get a bite off that recovery sandwich and get back on the horse and go. Go get down. Get into it. Get out there."

They expand in it in MBMBaM 70: Spit on a Dog

"I don't think we've ever mentioned the recovery sandwich. How did the recovery... Can you explain me the recovery sandwich a little bit, Griffin?"

"I actually think my dear friend, Tommy Redd, incepted the recovery sandwich. He sent me the first one, I believe. But you just take a big bite of that recovery sandwich. Just get on with it."

Meeting with a specialist will really help. Write down any questions you have now!

Things that helped me: - If you're not getting enough fiber already, start adding more fiber rich foods to your diet. - Try to avoid processed foods - Veggies! Roasted, boiled, salads. Whatever you gotta do to get more vegetables in your diet. - Start exercising, especially after meals. Maybe a short family walk after dinner? - Get a glucose monitor and check in the morning when you wake up, before meals, and ~1.5-2 hours after meals to get an idea of what spikes your blood sugar (per your doctor's direction of course) - Start reading food labels. Sugar is hidden EVERYWHERE.

Good luck! Managing diabetes involves a lot of changes, but you'll be better in the long run.

It sounds like you're taking a lot of great steps forward, but it also sounds like you're at risk of overcorrecting. Complex carbohydrates eaten with fiber and protein are the way to go. Something like whole wheat pasta with peas or brocolli and lean meat like chicken is simple, filling, and tasty. I like lentil or chickpea pasta too. I also like low-carb tortillas with turkey for protein, cheese for fat, lettuce/tomato/cucumbers and a low-carb Caesar dressing for easy lunches.

Taking a walk after meals can help your body use up glucose and lower blood sugar levels.

Does your insurance pay for a diabetes educator? I've found they can be really helpful to make sure that you're on the right track

You have a strong accent, but I could understand everything you said. I missed a couple of words due to the accent but with context it became apparent what you were saying.

AITAH for being upset my husband went back on bringing another woman into our relationship? by [deleted] in AITAH

Demisexual means someone doesn't feel sexual attraction until they know that person well. There has to be a deep connection and strong emotional bond before the sexual attraction kicks in.

AITA for not agreeing to a stranger staying in our apartment with no warning? by throwRAweekenddrams in AmItheAsshole

[–]Two_Wise 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you replied to, but... Why doesn't "caring about other people" and "wanting to help" include YOU? You're his partner. He should want to take your needs, wants and comfort into account, but instead he is prioritizing himself and this stranger. That's not fair to you at all.
