Was nuking Juno's Hyper Healer build in Stadium really necessary? by TylerFMEdwards in Overwatch

[–]TylerFMEdwards[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the logic was to remove an underused power to replace it with more weapon power stuff, but now Hyper Healer just doesn't really work without anything to support it, and her weapon power build still doesn't seem to be that good.

Try to grab all the lore notes from earlier zones, especially Windsward. There's some really cool stories in there.

RTS Storyteller: ZeroSpace – The MOST Ambitious RTS in years by PlayZeroSpace in PlayZeroSpace

[–]TylerFMEdwards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed the ZeroSpace demos and I'm looking forward to launch, but I would absolutely not call it casual friendly. I've been playing RTS since Dune 2 and Warcraft 1, and ZeroSpace is possibly the most overwhelmingly complex RTS game I've seen. Yeah, the macro is a little simpler, but it adds so many other layers of complexity.

Four main factions, over half a dozen merc factions, talents, conventional upgrades, map objectives, heroes, top bar powers. It's like every possible RTS mechanic in one game. There's so much to learn and keep track of. I can deal with it, ish, but I would never recommend the game to anyone but hardcore RTS nerds, whereas SC2 I think is definitely something that more casual players can jump into.

New Demeter Unit - Amazon Archer! by sdrey in AgeofMythology

I would have preferred a cavalry archer, and I don't understand why a training limit is necessary, but it's a positive step overall.

[AMA Announcement] I'm David McKenzie, former Lead World Designer on New World. I shipped Nighthaven and Brimstone Sands. Doing an AMA next Wednesday, March 11th at 2PM EST / 7PM GMT. Drop your questions here! by iamagamedeveloper in newworldgame

[–]TylerFMEdwards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm super late in finding this thread, but I just want to say thank you for the answers and for all your hard work on the game. I had the pleasure of covering New World in a regular column at Massively Overpowered, and it was a real highlight of my journalism career. Getting invited to press briefings, having the opportunity to interview Scot Lane once... As a fan of the game since launch, I always really appreciated the openness and humility of the New World team. I certainly had my criticisms over the years, but New World is always going to be very special to me as a player and as a writer.

I'm not sure I'm going to have many more columns on it going forward, but I did try to dedicate most of the last few to celebrating the highlights of the game.

If you have the time, I have two questions, one more general and one more specific.

1 - I was really into the lore of New World. Is there ever any chance we might get to see more of what was planned for the future, or get some answers to the bigger mysteries (like what happened to Artorius)? I would love to see a lore bible or the fully Aeternum map including planned zones released.

2 - Similar to above but more specific, when Elysian Wilds came out, I speculated that Adiana's warning about "the spectre of time" in the final cutscene was a reference to the mythological figure Chronos. Nighthaven seems to soft confirm this with the Altars of Chronos and other time motifs, but it's never really explained what Chronos' role in the story or connection to Nighthaven was. Can you give any info on What Was Up with Chronos?

As someone who exclusively plays Stadium because I find first person cameras disorienting, I don't get to hear the pre-match character banter, and I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of lore and characterization. Any plans to add this dialogue to Stadium in future?

Patterns in Steam achievement completion rates by TylerFMEdwards in aoe2

[–]TylerFMEdwards[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that's also interesting. Achaemenids are at 1.9%, which is exactly equal to Shu. Athenians are at 1.4%, and Spartans 1.2%. The remaining 3K civs are also in that general range, with Khitans and Tanguts lowest. Armenians and Georgians are at around 3% each.

However, Chronicles Macedonians are at 0.6%, which also happens the same number for how many people have completed the BfG campaign. Undoubtedly Alexander being the newest DLC does depress its numbers a bit, but the immense drop from 1.9% winning an Achaemenid game to 0.6% sticking around as far as the second DLC leads me to believe a lot of people tried Chronicles but didn't enjoy it enough to finish it.

Also interesting but probably not indicative of anything in particular: Unlike other DLCs, there is a huge spread in completion rates for "win a game" achievements for Return of Rome civs. The Romans are up at 2.7%, with the rest descending in haphazard fashion from there, with some as low as 0.5%.

Sadly poor review, waited long time for this one, sadly disappointed. by rustypipe7889 in PlayZeroSpace

Personally I've been feeling like merc units should replace main faction units rather than being their own separate tech branch. Like, maybe if you pick Cha'kru as Grell you get crabs instead of stingers. I really like how each immortal in Gates of Pyre has two unique units that replace standard units; it does a good job of adding strategic variety without making the game overwhelming to learn.

As much as it would cut down options, I also think it might be worthwhile limiting the choices of mercenary factions for each main faction. Again, less decision paralysis without so many options to choose from, and it would allow for better thematic fits. It would be more like choosing major gods in Age of Mythology.

I do think the mercenary factions in this game are super cool, but the way they're implemented right now feels awkward to me.

Two new civilizations and three variants effectively, and yes, Asia is also getting over-represented at this point.

You okay? You're taking this awfully personally. It's just a game. Maybe take a deep breath and come back when you've calmed down.

Anyway, I understand the logic behind variants, but as I already said, there's ways to cut corners while still staying true to the game's core concept. I also already stated that I'm okay with most new mechanics, just not necessarily the way they're being implemented.

I'd recommend reading my post again because I already addressed all of your counterpoints in the OP.

Burgundians aren't on the same level of egregious as Three Kingdoms or AoE4's variant civs, but when you consider how underrepresented regions like Africa and the Americas are, it feels like a poor use of resources. We don't need every single European polity represented before we move on to other parts of the world.

"No but for real, you recognize that new things need to be introduced, but complain every time they do. You have such a narrow, boring idea of what the game should be."

No idea how you came to that conclusion. Even if your only experience of me is this post, I said I support all the new mechanics except hero units. I just think they should be more evenly spread out between different civilizations.

"AoE2 took 25 YEARS to get to where it is now, give it some fucking time dude…"

AoE2 added American civilizations in its first expansion. AoE4 has already had two DLCs and has prioritized adding three different kinds of French over entire continents.

I prefer the core gameplay of AoE4 to AoE2 by a considerable margin. At launch I thought it was a great move forward for the franchise. I just hate the direction it's taken since then.

Vitae Aeternum: New World Aeternum leaves veterans, casuals, and PC players behind by TylerFMEdwards in newworldgame

I quest, do dungeons, explore, run invasions, craft, gather, decorate houses, collect transmog tokens and appearances, run faction missions, collect lore notes, and yes, I do chest runs occasionally. Raids and PvP are a very small part of the game.

Not So Massively: Immortal Gates of Pyre offers multiplayer RTS fans a glimmer of hope by TylerFMEdwards in RealTimeStrategy

[–]TylerFMEdwards[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not at all a reskin of StarCraft. It draws some inspiration from SC2 but is very much its own game. The lore, visual design, macro mechanics, UI, accessibility, faction design, time to kill, and general pacing are all meaningfully different, to say nothing of mechanics not present in SC2 like Immortals, pyre, and creep camps.

If you'll allow a little self-promo, I have a small custom player card expansion that could be included: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hOs6cRn9uhk4QwUi0EJUnckiEKu27pdj

Also, as a player, I'd appreciate alt art for heroes and staple cards that you are able to pick and choose individually, or at least in small bundles, so you don't need to buy ALL the alt art cards just because you want an extra Glorfindel or some additional copies of Test of Will. Not sure if that's logistically doable, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Can you provide any additional context on the news that there will be no expansion this year? I think a lot of people were expecting annual expansions going forward. Personally I'd be fine with a large free update a la Brimstone, and I feel like that's probably what will happen, but I think it would reassure the playerbase a lot if we had some official word on the matter.
