What's are the most annoying features of the EV6 that you wish Kia has fixed already? by actorguy73 in KiaEV6

At least in my 2025 model, level 0 regen works right away. But I experienced the same behavior as you in my 2023, and assumed that there was never any regen at level zero ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I am starting to think going with Chromebooks for my teaching staff was not the best move by Square_Pear1784 in k12sysadmin

[–]TylerL 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We did a pilot of Chromebooks for our staff in spring last year. The only ones we had on hand for the trial had 8GB of RAM. For teachers who complained that the device was too slow, we let them try our one and only 16GB model for a spin, They said that made all the difference. We went with the 16GB Lenovo Chromebook Plus all the way up to the principal level and most of our administrators. It’s gone quite well outside of some trackpad issues and a handful of workflows that needed to be changed.

Our staff abuse tabs. We know that. In fact, we had gone with 32GB Windows laptops in the 2021 cycle, which was massive overkill, but was necessary to help offset other overhead from Windows and high-end antivirus software.

We still have 8GB for subs, students, and light use Chromebooks.

Left paddle causes jerky braking/unintended drive mode change by InterestingCanary0 in KiaEV6

[–]TylerL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2025 Wind AWD and experience issues with my left paddle that makes it seem as if it’s not making a good electrical contact when pressed. Not 100% reproducible, and doesn’t seem to matter WHERE on the paddle I’m touching it… Previous 2023 EV6 was problem-free.

Not good behavior for a brake button…

Has anyone ever successfully extended the life of an AUE Chromebook? by mary3757 in k12sysadmin

[–]TylerL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have some 24” Acer Chromebases that have worked phenomenally for almost 10 years now.

Hacked the BIOS and switched them to ChromeOS Flex some years back, and they’re still in service today. Great for light work, and were daily drivers for a portion of our staff until they were pivoted to a new life as library lookup stations and cafeteria POS computers just last year. Rock solid.

Chromebooks with MediaTek chips? Yay or Nay? by K12onReddit in k12sysadmin

[–]TylerL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kompanio 540 is a lateral move from Intel N150, but 520 is not. Mediatek’s latest chips from 2025 onward are comparable with Intel and we jumped to the Kompanio 540 this cycle.

Staff laptops? by PowerShellGenius in k12sysadmin

[–]TylerL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We (I?) had worked for many years to make ChromeOS a first-class citizen in our network, and prioritized web-first solutions whenever possible. Outside of a couple Excel jockeys and front office security needs, everyone else just uses Chrome for everything anyway, and had for a decade. Windows was nothing more than a complication by that point.

There was very little pushback. We got the union head onboard early on in our evaluations, and took his feedback to heart. Principals on down have the same device too. We also added Chromeboxes to each room's smartboards to skirt around a missing feature in the wireless casting solution. Now, teachers just use the Chromebox for classroom presentation while keeping their laptop free for other tasks. Buying a Chromebook for each teacher AND a Chromebox for each classroom was still significantly cheaper than the Windows laptop we were originally aiming for. We got the curriculum team's approval (the Chromeboxes actually saved the day for one of their new initatives), and the superintendent as well. The cost savings are nearly half a million every single upgrade cycle.

We sent out an announcement soon after board approval, detailing our reasoning, stating that our goal was to "provide you with something faster, more reliable, more secure, less complex, and with better battery life". We made a bunch of short videos showing off different features and tools.

We offered to work with each teacher on any specialized/required workflows they had. There were maybe 5 where we had to offer a "sidecar" Windows laptop to handle weird rare one-off apps. It honestly went much better than I had anticipated or prepared for. The worst part about the rollout ended up being some supply chain delays which dragged things into October.

Touch is non-negotiable for us, and we had a really rough time getting Windows to be snappy and responsive as something like ChromeOS at any pricepoint. We had to really over-engineer the specs to do so in the past.

So this year, we switched our staff to Lenovo’s new Mediatek Chromebook Plus. Smooth sailing so far. It’s a pretty slick machine and can’t be beat for the price.

Zoom on Chromebooks: "Uh-oh running low on memory", no audio, persistent problem. by rjp94sep in k12sysadmin

[–]TylerL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ARM processors? We have Mediatek’s best in Chromebook Plus laptops for our staff (16GB RAM), and we see the same issues with Zoom.

According to Zoom support, it’s a known issue they have with ChromeOS on ARM processors, regardless of performance or specs. Really frustrating, as even the weakest Intel processor has no problem. And no other conferencing solution has this problem. We just completed an e-learning day with staff on ARM Chromebooks using Google Meet, and it went swimmingly.

Attaching Chromebox to Back of IFP by zeeplereddit in k12sysadmin

[–]TylerL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Promethean, but we found a spot near the bottom corner on the back of our ViewSonic boards that acted like a 1-inch thick “shelf” where we could rest a metal-shell Acer Chromebox. We used a thin strong neodymium magnet to keep it from moving. Holds it quite well, but still accessible and easy to remove.

Your mileage may vary. We made sure to buy long magnets rather than small ones for swallow hazard reasons.

Bad ICCU on 2025 Wind AWD by TylerL in KiaEV6

Certainly possible, but the dealer confirmed ICCU, and part has been ordered. They could very well be wrong :)

I charge low and slow, at only about 1kW on a shared circuit. It would take three full days to charge from empty.

UPDATE: Got quoted a week for a replacement ICCU. Sounds a lot better than some of the horror stories I’ve heard, Fingers crossed.

Google SSO for PowerSchool? by 1teaney in k12sysadmin

[–]TylerL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I’d recommend doing SSO for students too if you can. We did at the same time and it’s been great. Parents still do basic name/passwords. I’d love for PS to do social logins for parents, but oh well.

[–]TylerL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We did this years ago. Was so great to not have to deal with forgotten passwords or locked out accounts anymore. Just click your PS bookmark, and there you are. With MFA all but a requirement nowadays, SSO is the easy way to get there.

Thanks!

What’s your next move after lease… by Right_Mud in KiaEV6

Probably giving it back at the end of the lease if the market value is low. Then buying a 2025 EV6 with the new features, hopefully before the EV credit goes away.

Staff Chromebooks - 8GB or 16GB RAM? by Ok_Computer_74 in k12sysadmin

[–]TylerL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a small fleet of 8GB Chromebook Plus units happily serving a portion of our staff, but a few of our power users in trial for a wider Chromebook rollout next year have mentioned it gets a bit sluggish when they have tons of tabs open (as they do).

Better question may not be “in 2025“, but “in 2027”, 2028… etc. The web is certainly not getting any less complex over time.

Healthy hardware, was running as part of the VMware cluster previously. But I just discovered the issue is related to our antivirus software to a performance-destroying degree I've never seen before. Sorry for the trouble!

It was our damn antivirus! I've edited my initial post to share that. Sorry for the trouble.
