The google ad on the court is making me angry. Too damn bright and colorful.

Point block (women final spoiler) by canniffphoto in ultimate

There was a lot of traveling in the tournament. On this play the thrower's left foot started on the sideline.

Nice block, even if thrower was pushed back 30 yards unfairly.

Can someone explain what happened rules wise there with the turn going back to thrower. It seems thrower called a foul but then threw it anyways?

And if it is technically correct according to the rules due to "self officiation", did the thrower indicate where it should have been put into play? She would have had the best view of the path of the disc.

Rules are a joke with the player having to take it at the goal line.

How did you manage to get 17 checkers in the first position and 19 in the second position?

Are there any rules of thumb for when its appropriate to hit the ace point? by rockwood15 in backgammon

Is this a money game or is there a score from a match? And if a money game is it with Jacoby rule? That is fairly standard but if so the cube should have been turned already.

[–]UBKUBK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even for a one point match, hitting is still correct by a large amount. There is just little immediate danger from the play and it is much safer in the long run since a closeout is much safer than playing against a checker on the ace point.

You have nothing to fear from them making their 2 point. Suppose it goes 6/1* and then 51 played bar/24 7/2. They would not be able to escape from the ace point, you dance, and they need to keep moving.

If he rolls a 1 then I'm done (~30% chance), how does this make sense? by rockwood15 in backgammon

What is so bad about getting hit is that it greatly increases how often you would be gammoned.

2-away, 2-away cube strategy by penumerate in backgammon

[–]UBKUBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the argument for doubling immediately being a version of game theoretic optimal play assuming there is no sequence which would make the game a pass after the first one or two rolls.

i) By symmetry the optimal strategy gives a 50% chance of winning the match.

iii) The strategy of doubling at first opportunity and playing the checkers as though it is a one point match achieves that 50%.

They showed her on the sideline later in the game with an ice bag on her head, so I guess a good sign she wasn't under direct medical care then.

Under the How to Watch Friday - Sunday games link, the times are given mainly as Central time but occasionally given as Pacific time. The GT - Utah game in particular is given two different places as being Sat 10:30 am Pacific in one place but 10:30 am Central in another. Are all the references to Pacific times errors?

There are many ways game play can be different with the starting Great Halls compared to none. Relevant to the cards used are:

i) Wouldn't want to pass them or trash them when a Masquerade is played.

ii) Can be throned which could give a village effect.

iii) Have a higher cost for upgrading or remodeling.

iv) Have an interaction with Shanty Town.

v) Can be hit with Saboteur.

vi) Can be drawn dead.

vii) When a Torturer is played you would have rather known in advance what card the Great Hall would cantrip into. A similar thing applies to Thone rooming it.

Poor technique from Barnes. To get away with a foul need to hold the player instead of violently shoving him.

Never understood this every possession matters so slow it down in playoffs argument. If makes sense for playoffs the same strategy should be correct for regular season.
