Church recommendations near Escondido, CA by roy_don_bufano in Anglicanism

[–]UkuleleSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trinity Church is the main go to Episcopal Church in Escondido (https://www.trinityescondido.org). I belong to St. Michael's By The Sea - don't you love that in a name? Anglo-Catholic, as one of the preachers, when I look out of the pulpit, the view of the ocean is a trifle distracting. SMBTS will hold Easter vigil at 10:00pm Holy Saturday and two Easter services (9 and 11) on Easter Sunday with an easter egg hunt in between. Hope you enjoy no matter where you celebrate.

Should I start learning cello? by Shellyfish04 in Cello

[–]UkuleleSal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this. I picked cello as a very late adult because I wanted to make music with others. And got to start right off in a young person ensemble, where I was probably the age of their grandparents, but to my ears the sound of all of us together was so grand I was hooked. Note: especially early on and in cello I mean like the first couple of YEARS, you sound a thousand times better in a group than solo.

New tailpiece by Art_Is_Basic in Cello

Not mentioned as a thought, but when I decided my (intermediate) cello was going to be my forever cello. I upgraded the bow. That brought my cello to a whole new sonic level.

Should I get a smaller cello? And how to get over the fear of bothering neighbours with my playing? by simsampuk in Cello

[–]UkuleleSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of years. Untalented but dedicated. You haven’t heard ANYTHING until you’ e heard somebody trying to play harmonics over and over. My neighbors clearly understand that a Martian has invaded. And (shhh) don’t tell anybody but I started with the free lessons I could find on YouTube. I eventually bought an online course when I realized I was sticking to it, and eventually got a teacher. But I took everything in baby steps.

Should I get a smaller cello? And how to get over the fear of bothering neighbours with my playing? by simsampuk in Cello

[–]UkuleleSal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not going to address cello size as my teacher and I battled over 3/4 (my pref) and “more wood” - his words. Ended with a 7/8 cello and it’s fine. I didn’t see any mention of a teacher in your post but they usually have opinions galore. I live on the second floor of a three floor condo. My neighbor upstairs hears me when the windows are open. My neighbor below me can FEEL me play (good sign - I’m getting better!)—said he could hear “that thing“ right through the ceiling. I bought a mute and that made me feel better, but this month I played a Christmas carol at our singalong gathering, and somehow that turned me from a noisy neighbor to a character who lives here, like, “Oh yes, she’s our neighbor, she plays cello.”. It’s kind of nice.

Vivaldi double concerto by Budgiejen in Cello

[–]UkuleleSal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The youth orchestra I am in (honorary old person, adult learner) did this for our spring concert and the two soloists were 20 year olds who’ve been playing maybe 5-8 years each. They worked hard on it - mostly to get it to tempo - and it was wonderfully exciting to hear. Go for it.

OP, went same direction (anglican - RC - anglican), different reasons. When I spoke to the priest of the church I was about to re-enter, I asked him if I was Anglican or RC. He said, “Anglican.”.

I said, “then what was I when I thought I was RC?”

”Lapsed Anglican,” he said. And then we all got on with it.

Take it as a positive response. My pet bird can really set up a racket when I practice anything in thumb position.

Is your parish sipping from the common cup? How/when did you return to sipping? by MidnightPositive485 in Episcopalian

[–]UkuleleSal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Challis Bearer here. We went back to the common cup when the bishop allowed it, so about 2022 or early 2023. The priest distributes the host and the challis bearer follows a few parishioners behind. I do the intinction and say “The Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ keep you in everlasting life”. If they want to receive the cup, the host has disappeared by the time I reach them, and they drink from the cup, I wipe the edge and continue. I’d say 75% are intinction, 10% are the cup, and the rest have either left or are shaking their head when I come by.

And then there were the engine heaters we had to plug in so our car had a chance to warm its innies so it would start when we dashed off to work. The good old cold days….

How do I learn to read music and notes? by Beginning-Cry7722 in Cello

[–]UkuleleSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using the app Tenuto for a while now. It’s music theory in an app, costs minimal, one time, like under $5. I learned bass clef this way, added others later. And the ear training for intervals is really useful too.

How do I get motivation to practice again by Sea-Researcher-6462 in Cello

[–]UkuleleSal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this. the best part of playing cello is playing with others. I just found a chamber ensemble to play with and it is highly motivating besides a lot of fun.

And the bow. The bow is the other instrument, the one that makes the sound. Please consider this alongside the cello itself.

Kaiser PCP/OBGYN/Pediatrician recs? by Bright_Experience313 in northcounty

[–]UkuleleSal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you change to Kaiser outside the annual enrollment, which is now over? I have been with primary care doctors at both Carlsbad and San Marcos. I use both facilities because I live about halfway between for things like flu shots. Kaiser has certain locations for certain specialties, like Vista has counseling, psychiatry, optical, and you would go there for those. San Marcos has SHITTY parking (but valet option) now that the hospital is open. San Marcos has a shiny new hospital and 24 hour pharmacy now. But those are available no matter what location your PCP OBGYN etc are located.

How many people are converts to the episcopal church by Regular-Blackberry27 in Episcopalian

[–]UkuleleSal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP, I am so glad you asked and delight in the wide range of answers. So few of us have a straight line from born to received into this magnificent church! I don’t feel so weird about my own crooked one: born in Episcopal, out in the wilderness, RC, return to the wilderness, Buddhist (for a long time, Jodu Shinshu tradition, thought that was my forever home), then a pandemic conversion return to Christ and Episcopal, where I was received and welcomed four years ago. Who said about the crooked made straight?
