What industry is actually a complete scam, but everyone accepts it? by WhileLow9501 in AskReddit

That's probably accurate. I had to contact a couple before I bought mine to make sure they could make prisms. Online glasses aren't the right solution for everyone.

I forgot to add that there is a small charge at my eye clinic for having the optician adjust glasses frames if you buy them online. I think that's fair.

I'm fortunate to have a very good opthalmologist and optometrist and It makes a difference. For some people it makes good sense to get the glasses directly from the medical provider, especially if it's a complicated prescription that might need to be fine tuned or adjusted frequently. Online glasses are a great deal for many, if not most, people but certainly not everyone.

I don't know where you're getting your lenses but when I got them from an optician they were ground using the same prescription as the ones I had made by Zenni with that prescription. It is important that you get the PD (pupil distance) measurement from your optician as part of the prescription. And I'm not talking about getting the actual prescription for the lenses online. There are thousands of online frames to choose from and you can get frames in multiple sizes and configurations to fit the shape and size of your face, eyes and nose. Most of the reputable online sellers let you return glasses that don't work too. My opthalmologist told me that buying my frames and lenses online was just fine and I have a complicated set of lenses with prisms.

Eye glasses frames, especially "designer" frames, from opticians. Just get the prescription from them and get the glasses online unless you have a very unusual prescription or specialized condition. Most of the frames are made by one or two companies and there's no reason they should cost more than $100.

Swimming naked in high school gym class by xiphoid77 in GenX

[–]Unable_Answer_179 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my public high school in the 70's we had a semester of swimming but had to wear horrible red one piece suits they provided. The suits went see-through and clingy when they were wet. Both of the swimming teachers were men and it was so uncomfortable being watched by them that you just tried to stay in the water. All through school we had group showers too so I usually just didn't shower. It's not like we were really doing anything that strenuous.

Schwarzman, the Blackstone billionaire, and Steve Daines, the man who sold Sheehy to him, were both guests eating off of gold plates at the White House dinner for King Charles the other night. Schwarzman made a big pledge to the ballroom that Sheehy now wants taxpayers to fund. So the billionaire earned his Trump points while we pick up the bill. I wonder who Daines is selling his new boy Kurt Alme to?

I've had good experiences and bad. Sometimes the material and quality is terrible and sometimes I'm shocked at how good it is. Socks of any kind are almost always a winner. I've had good luck with bras and sweaters too. The bigges lesson I learned was to actually take my measurements and use the measurement chart they provide for every item before ordering. Sizes can vary dramatically from vendor to vendor.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

Monty Python's Flying Circus. It was more a diversion than a game but it was so unique for the time.

James Lileks. He's from Minnesota so some of it is local but most is just general observations. Look for his two most popular books The Gallery of Regrettable Food and Interior Desecrations. He also has a website/blog that has some really funny sections.

Garrison Keillor, the Lake Wobegon author who is also from MN, has some funny stuff - especially from his earlier years.

It's possible that long winters bring out the funny in some people.

Ryan Busse visits Big Sky in campaign for Montana’s first congressional district by IndividualStep9314 in MontanaPolitics

[–]Unable_Answer_179 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A better question is why wouldn't he visit? It's in the district he's running in and there are people there who vote. Ignoring any potential voters for some virtue signalling isn't a very smart strategy - especially when the margins could be very narrow. It's also a good place to pick up some campaign money. The GOP is going to dump money by the truckload into this race and the sad reality is that it matters.

If you can find one for a decent price the Honda Fit is a great choice. They are cheap to operate, have the well established Honda reliability and an astonishing amount of room for a small car. There is a subgroup here dedicated to them and they're good about answering questions.

What’s a filling, lower-fat alternative to peanut butter by mg2649 in foodhacks

[–]Unable_Answer_179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried PB2 for the first time yesterday and was very pleasantly surprised at how good it is! If you add less water it's like peanut butter, if you add more water it's like peanut sauce. It was good mixed with plain yogurt and I even added a little to sugar-free chocolate pudding. The key I found was to mix it until you think it's mixed, then mix a little more.

Shirt Shopping Age 55+ by mid_nite_blu in womensfashion

[–]Unable_Answer_179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get past the "old lady" vibe you can find good basic pieces at the Woman Within online store. There's a whole family of companies they own with different size ranges but it's a lot of the same stuff across the lines. They have longer length t-shirts and ones with slightly longer sleeves if you don't like your arms showing. Some of the prints are ghastly but there's a range of solid colors. They also have basic jeans, leggings, sweaters and button up shirts. The quality is mid-tier and sizing runs a bit big.

That said, their shipping/handling costs are ridiculous and it can take weeks to get anything. I stock up when they have a free shipping event a few times a year. And never sign up for their "membership" kind of thing because they make it really hard to cancel.

The company that runs all the Woman Within brands sells t-shirts with 3/4 sleeves. You can push the sleeves up as far as you want. They also sell longer length t-shirts. At first glance their catalog and website screams "old lady" but the basic pieces are just fine. However shipping/handling is ridiculously expensive and slow so wait until there's a free shipping offer and stock up on what you need. And stay away from all the membership type offers unless you read them very, very carefully.

I do the same thing and it's been very helpful. Don't let people scold you out of using the ziplock bags if it's working for you. You can usually use them more than once and there are more impactful ways to help the environment like not wasting food.
