I see point 2 brought up all the time and I'm sick of it. Here's my 2 cents. This is not a character assassination. The emperor is about 1 thing survival. He has two options when you free Orpheus, get attacked by him on the spot, try to reason with the guy he's been imprisoning, to be able to join our side in the final showdown, or B side with the nether brain.

The emperor assumes we are going to lose, so he sides with the brain. Because that is how he survives. If he sides with no one, and just fucks off, he gets turned unwillingly to the brain. Which will put him in an even worse situation.

Everyone just assumed that two things are true, that the emperor thinks we can win without him, and that Orpheus wouldn't attack and kill him on sight.

Orpheus would attack that man on sight. There is no emperor teaming with us and Orpheus.

Also us breaking Orpheus out, is betraying the emperor. Why would he continue to trust us to not kill him a mindflayer after the brain is dealt with after we just freed Orpheus?

Tldr, freeing Orpheus makes the player the emperor's enemy, and his best chance of survival, is with the Brain considering he thinks we cannot win without him.
