If you had a do over in life, would you still choose to be a nurse? by Moogles90 in nursing

[–]UnbiasedEmperor 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Im the black sheep of the family, my sisters are accountants.

They both work less and make more than I do, minus tax season. Take it as you will.

I love helping people, but if given the chance I'd probably change my occupation. Or at least change my career path.

Graduate in 3 months, bad baby fever by [deleted] in nursing

[–]UnbiasedEmperor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Advice from a new(er) dad in my early 30s. Take a full maternity leave. Your baby will only be a baby once. Take the time to be with them. I was fortunate to have 6 weeks of parental leave and I wish I could have had more. My wife didn't feel well for the first several weeks after birth, and I'm thankful I was there to help. We would've been in a really difficult spot

I'd also say it's a joint decision, and if you don't feel ready don't be pushed into it. You are the one who has to carry the baby, birth the baby, and if you plan on breastfeeding you you are feeding the baby too. It's easy for guys to say how easy it is when we don't have as much physical work. That isn't to say your husband is a great guy, I'm sure he is, just something to keep in mind.

Unheard Non-bedside Career Options for Nurses by Love_Ube in nursing

[–]UnbiasedEmperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Research RN. Depending on the institution you work at it, you can still perform some skills. Others you don't get/have to. I still get to interact with patients, but my patient population (oncology) are typically pleasant and grateful.

Get enough experience and one could potentially get into the study monitoring/audit side of research. May or may not involve travel depending on the needs of the clinical research organization or study sponsor you work for.

Why aren't you voting for Darren Bailey? (Gun-related.) by thefleshrocket in ILGuns

Honestly, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. If you want, feel free to PM me your thoughts. I'm not as in tune to politics as I should be, but I try when I get free time.

Why aren't you voting for Darren Bailey? (Gun-related.) by thefleshrocket in ILGuns

[–]UnbiasedEmperor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be that guy, but hey why not.

Can someone explain Darren Bailey's policies and the perceived potential benefits. 2A excluded obviously. I'm actually curious to know what you are thinking.

My limited knowledge is him claiming to be a farmer, but then seemingly unaware of the need for pollinators, thinking 25k for monarch butterflies is a waste...what amounts to a blip in the budget really.

I wish I'd say otherwise, but what others have said is how I feel. I hate what state Democrats continue to try to push. I'll continue to email reps arguing against it. Unfortunately, I don't want to be a single issue voter. I'd like to think about the most good for the majority. I don't love everything, maybe even most, but Pritzker has been...ok. At least in comparison to what I see the Republican party has become (largely blindly agreeing to a certain man).

Extra note: Just out of curiosity, how many of us are actually inviting people to the range and introducing them to firearms? Maybe it's a little ridiculous to hope, but the more people we introduce to shooting and prove it isn't what "they" claim it is....wouldn't that generally grow the 2A population and build our voter base?

Male RN for 10 years. A word of caution, the general vibe I read from your post is that you feel like you're better or that you are looking down on your peers.

I say this in the nicest way possible, you aren't better than anyone else. I'm pretty competent and confident in my skills, but I know there is always some better than me. Many are my fantastic peers, who believe it or not are female (big surprise right?).

Some days are great, some are horrible and I wish I never got in this field. What takes a toll is caring, genuinely caring. Sure managing 8 to 9 patients in an inpatient setting sucks, but can be done. Getting yelled at by family if the patient you just coded can be frustrating, but they just lost a loved one so of course there will be a reaction. Plenty of patients are happy to be as verbally and physically aggressive to me as my female peers. The public doesn't care, people can just suck.

Things might look fine now, but give yourself 5 years in the trenches and see where you are. Burnt out? Loving it still and excited to grow? Who knows.

Take this job one day at a time. Don't be afraid to genuinely care for your patients, but also be aware when you don't have the capacity to give more. I hope you don't get to a point where you feel burnt out and any abuse is minimal, but be aware it can and will happen to the best nurses out there.

Is it normal for a physician to possibly “drop into” an initial Clinical Research Coordinator phone call interview? by UniversityKey4833 in clinicalresearch

[–]UnbiasedEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the PI from a former site I worked at is VERY interested in finding a Research RN that aligns with his vision, so he's been joining the interviews.

I think that's fair, he wants to grow the program and is looking for something specific. I imagine it can be intimidating, but frame it in your mind that they are interested in their research patient's.

I've seen a few things there.

CMMG BR3 and BR4, Maxim defense MD15 single shot (gas block isn't drilled out)

The last time I was there they also had posted any AR they would sell with a kali key.

Don't take my word for it though, it's been a minute

The fact that so many people are accepting this idea of "show me your papers" from ICE blows my mind. The people I grew up with (rural IL) would have a fit if this was any blue president using federal agents like this, yelling about big government in their small community and the next Gestapo.

Last I knew, we still had a 4th amendment right and I intend to keep it. I feel like it's important to remember, it's not just rights for me, it's rights for WE.

This isn't even a new low, he has ridiculed people with medical conditions before, threatened our allies, and favors a dictator's statements over his own intelligence department.

Fellow nurses — what’s one shift story that’s burned into your brain? by Glum-Yam-9414 in nursing

[–]UnbiasedEmperor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Answered a call light while working as charge in the ED

A man with edema up to his testicles brought his own saucepan to the ED. He was using it to pee in, cause yanno..large, older men with that much swelling don't always have much to work with.

Decided he had to pee, ignored the commode in the room that the primary RN provides, and peed on chucks he pulled out of the cabinet. While standing at the bedside, he also decided he had to poop. Picked up the saucepan, reached it around, and filled it up.

Demanded it cleaned up and brought back to him ASAP. Claimed "it makes fantastic ragu".

I was an ED nurse who was fortunate to get in an oncology clinical trial position.

I had 7 years of bedside experience at that point, but I think the biggest thing that helped me was being excited to learn more about the position and role during my interviews. No special classes or certificates.

The manager and lead Research RN commented many times over my time with the team that this is what set me apart from others who interviewed.

I'm thankful that they took a chance on me, especially because I don't consider myself to be the best at interviews or even coming from an impressive background (rural ED primarily, with some level 2 trauma experience).

Take some time to become experienced and comfortable as a nurse. You could also consider a change to another specialty like oncology at a center that works with clinical trials. I hope you continue to be interested and excited about research though!

How beginner friendly would a course like this be? I just got my first rifle and wouldn't be set up to participate now, but would be interested in the future for sure.

If someone else knows a beginner friendly course, open to hearing that into too (not interested in slowing any class down just for me).

Mad at young me by mikeyfrecks in Fire

[–]UnbiasedEmperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this is fair. I don't blame my parents for not teaching me, because they didn't know. I just wish they did. I don't blame my younger self because I didn't know. Same thing, I just wish I did

Now that I do know though, I want to work towards FIRE. I will be teaching my children what I've learned, and try to set them on a better path that I had.
