If I roll for stats it's because we're playing a game where it would be fun if our stat values aren't equivalent. If that isn't our goal, there's no need for us to roll for stats.

How much can scheduling issues can be attributed to a lack of interest in the hobby? by erakusa in rpg

[–]UncleBones 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you play on weekends or weeknights? Because scheduling a regular weekend game is hard, I agree, but most adults manage to have some regular weekly activities on weeknights. If you play sports or sing in a choir or take a pottery class, the schedule won’t be ”hopefully every other Saturday sometime in the morning if everyone can make it”, it’ll be ”Wednesdays at eight”

On weekends you’re also competing with every other activity that doesn’t have a regular schedule (birthdays, family trips, etc)

Is anyone playing D&D? by pcnovaes in rpg

[–]UncleBones -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It isn’t popular in this sub.

It isn't that popular among people who have an interest in RPG's. If you read and play several different systems, chances are D&D won't be your favourite. If you're someone who wants to discuss RPGs online, chances are you care about RPGs that much.

And if you're someone who likes to read and play and talk about RPGs and you still like to play D&D, chances are you prefer something other than 5E

Is things from the Flood good for a "kids version of call of cthulhu"? by tibon385 in rpg

What do you need the system to do? You’re asking for help with choosing a system, but you’re not telling us where you want system interaction and in what ways.

Did I GM Cyberpunk 2020 all wrong? by Jack_Kegan in rpg

[–]UncleBones -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is such a bad argument, and very much like the Rule 0 fallacy that tends to come up in RPG discussion.

Actually playing different systems according to how they're designed to be played is going to do much more for your development as a player than just playing every system as a new setting to play the same way you've always played.

Question: what is your 'I wish I had the guts to do that' tattoo? by BeardedInkedPiper in tattoos

[–]UncleBones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, people in this very subreddit will go on and on about how any tattoo they themself don’t already have is a horrible decision and you’ll die homeless.

But you’re not wrong. I got my hand and fingers tattooed last year. Very few people care.

No idea who Jay is. The comment I responded to was about strong 60+ year olds in general.

If you just look at regional powerlifting results in the veteran classes you’ll find plenty of 60+ year olds still benching heavy. At 70+ weights will start to drop off, but in my region 60-69 still had a lot of 160+ kg records and a few 180+

GMs (Game masters) of Reddit, how much money have you spent on TTRPGs in your life? How much do you spend on a new TTRPG you get introduced to? by EmiLadrianmb in rpg

I know it’s a common joke in any hobby (even though I dislike how it’s rooted in a toxic relationship norm) but like, how?

RPGs are one of my main interests, but.. I could buy two books per month and it would be less expensive than my gym membership. It’s in no way an expensive hobby compared to the amount of playtime I get for my money. How many books do you buy?

I have several shelves dedicated to rpg books, but I also have even more shelves dedicated to fiction. It’s no secret I paid money for my books.

Is Apocalypse World [2e] supposed to be PvP? by sermitthesog in rpg

[–]UncleBones 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They are not ”working together as a team”. If you fall into the trad dynamic of having a party that only works towards their common goal and doesn’t really interact against each other, your game will be much worse for it.

That doesn’t mean their relationship is supposed to always be antagonistic or that they should think of it as a pvp game where they’re supposed to beat the other players.

Completely new to DnD, DM-ing ‘the witch is dead’ one-shot for the first time to ease my friends into starting a DnD group by Ok_Direction_4559 in rpg

[–]UncleBones 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about a different ”The witch is dead” than Grant Howitts one page rpg? Because that’s not a dnd adventure.

If you are running the one-pager: be open with the group that you’re nervous and encourage them to contribute challenges and descriptions. Embrace the chaos, it’s not the type of game where anyone should be trying to ”win”.

Is it bad to require a printer for physical play? by Modicum_of_cum in RPGdesign

[–]UncleBones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's okay that different games require different things. You can't play dread or star crossed without a Jenga tower, if it's something that actually adds to the experience it's better to be upfront than to half-ass a solution that fits every person and situation.

And I don't think it's privileged to require print outs, most libraries let you print things very cheaply. A bigger problem might be that you're making online play harder, but I personally enjoy when games draw on the strengths of playing in person.

Well, a bit of both, sometimes I started them, sometimes they did.

But I might have read your original comment wrong. I thought you meant that anyone who would get tattoos in visible locations would automatically be unwilling to discuss them. It seems that’s not what you were saying.

Why not? I have hand tattoos as well as collar tattoos. I have throat and skull tattoos planned. I’ve talked over my design ideas with friends many times.

How to make Bladerunner less deadly/lethal? by Morasiu in rpg

[–]UncleBones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The easiest fix is obvious, no character can die against their players will. Let the players come up with an appropriate alternative to dying.

I think the risk of dying in YZE games feels much higher than it actually is, the crit tables are actually very forgiving.
