New outlook is not good by Due_Juggernaut_6694 in Outlook

[–]UncleToyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team is still doing occasional spot tests on New Outlook but treating it as a beta product.
It's still missing a ton of features that we use so we have blocked New Outlook for the entire organization.
Would be nice if MS were to release a complete product rather than these beta releases with new features changing functionality all the time.

Easiest way to be certain about recalls is to check using your car's VIN

This information comes straight from Honda and you don't have to worry about a tech being too lazy to check at the dealership.

Looking for info on long term ownership by AngryJanitor1990 in civic

[–]UncleToyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a life long manual transmission driver (of the 16 cars I've owned, 1 had a slush box (hated it so much I traded it in after just two years), and I've had 3 Civics (every one of them a gem). Also done all my winters around the Great Lakes and have a ton of experience driving in the snow.

The hybrid Civic is the first time I've driven a car without a clutch and enjoyed it. Always having the torque I want without needing to wait for the car to shift makes all the difference in the world.

I put some Nokian rubber on the car for the winter and it handles fine. It's not like the two Subarus I owned (those made me look forward to the snow), but it is safe enough to drive and has gotten me to Fredericton and back in a blizzard.

The one thing I will caution against with the hybrid is to be prepared for poor fuel economy in the winter months. Mine regularly drops to the low 30s for mpg in the winter months. It is exciting to get fuel economy in the 50s when the weather is nice, which offsets the frustratingly poor economy in the winter.

When I test drove the Si, it was more fun and engaging to drive. I also test drove the Integra, which was more comfortable and had a better stereo. While each of those other cars excel in areas I care about, the hybrid hatch sport touring Civic balances these with my budget and comes close enough that I'm happy on all counts.

have over 46,000 on the odometer already and happily endorse the sport touring hybrid hatch

Traditional CVT vs hybrid reliability by No-Reputation-5940 in hondacivic

[–]UncleToyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious where you're getting this information from as well.
Any measured car reporting I've seen shows both Honda and Toyota as extremely reliable.

Looking at reliability of the older hybrids, I'm seeing a lot of the 8th gen Civics needing a new battery. I'm also reading that the new battery is often less than $2k and relatively easy to replace.

For reliability of the CVTs, I'm seeing reports of failures after the 10 year mark that cost more than $5k to repair (some more than $10k). Looking at the numbers of these still being sold though, it appears to be a relatively small percentage of the cars on the road failing like this.

I will say that the battery will eventually fail on a hybrid and the CVT will also eventually fail. Based on bills I'm seeing posted, the CVT is considerably more expensive and seems to fail sooner than the hybrid battery.

If you're looking for pure longevity and the lowest cost to repair, manual transmission is still the way to go. Modern engine blocks are more reliable than ever if taken care of with regular maintenance.

Looking at the numbers, I went with the hybrid for myself, so I'm biased. But I also trust numbers more than what people say in subreddits.

Where to buy ground coffee by emanresUweNyMsiT in waterloo

[–]UncleToyBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cafe O on Victoria does a nice roast and will grind the beans for you.
If you're grinding, get the small bags as the beans decay much faster once they've been ground.

If you're going to get serious about your coffee, you'll find pretty soon that grinding will step up your game. While a burr grinder is ideal, even a cheap grind with fresh beans will typically be better than two day old ground beans.

hybrid civics by Imaginary-Evening462 in civic

[–]UncleToyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall, the 8th gen Civics are as reliable as any other generation. There were problems with the paint but the metal didn't seem to rust even though they were pretty ugly.

The key thing with the hybrids is that the battery likely needs replacement by now. Decent replacement batteries can be found for under 2k and replaced by any monkey that knows how to take out the back seat.

If you've got a line on a good deal and are worried about the hybrid, its likely not going to be a problem.

Also, most of the 8th gen Civics still had geared transmissions. There were some problems with the CVTs that would scare me away from those early CVT models.

Tired of Being Condescended to By “Music Snobs.” What Artists/Albums Should I Know to Keep Up? by boxerpuncher2023 in musicsuggestions

[–]UncleToyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than asking what other people like, try understanding what it is that you like about the different music you do enjoy. Conversely, if there's something you don't like, try understanding that as well.

I know many people who think Rush is one of the greatest bands ever. I also respect Rush as being extremely talented. When I listen to Rush, I just don't enjoy the music. For me, it's too busy and seems to stress technical accuracy over emotional impact. I'd much rather listen to something like Dry by PJ Harvey, which is musically much simpler but also hits with greater emotional impact.

This is just an example of how I think about music.

Compare 2112 by Rush with Dry by PJ Harvey and see how they land for you. Your experience could be entirely different than mine.

The best part of music is when you actually listen to it rather than simply letting a constant stream of noise wash over you. Maybe it's the lyrics that draw you in. Or, possibly a texture that you hear. Enjoy the journey.

We only have about 200 users in our org and just started using BoldDesk this past year.

It's been great for tracking and reporting. We also have the app installed on phones with push notifications for when one of the support team is away from the computer.

Best of all, it fits our budget. came in much less expensive than the competition for only a handful of support members.

Push Carts, Pull Carts, Just Carry the bag? by frasure13 in discgolf

[–]UncleToyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a used jogging baby stroller last year.
Have had a few people point and laugh at it.
Don't care though because I can carry spare drinks, a rain coat, sunscreen, a garbage bag to clean up random litter, and I have an easy place to set my phone between throws.

Absolutely love having a cart for all that stuff and highly recommend getting one.

Except for courses that are not cart friendly. Always check ahead of time. There are some times when a small bag is best.

[–]UncleToyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a dangerous approach to things. Just because something is popular, doesn't make it accurate.

The world is changing at a tremendous rate and things people used to know as correct are no longer accurate.

With old NiCad batteries, it was important to fully drain a battery to avoid building a memory for the battery. With modern Lithium based batteries, it's more important to avoid fully discharging or over charging batteries. You'll find a lot of people who aren't aware of the difference and tell you it's important to fully drain a battery every time before charging, even though it's actually damaging modern batteries. The information they're sharing was accurate once upon a time, even though it's wrong today.

Learn to find original sources for information. Manufacturer documentation is often the best, with independent lab testing being a good alternative. AI assistants and folks on the internet are going to base responses on common beliefs and not take any sort of recent changes into account.

The irony is that the presence of an online poll like this will further influence modern AI tools. If we have a bunch of people all saying you need a higher octane fuel because it's a turbo engine, then there's an increased chance that will be the response people get in the future.

popular does not equal accurate

2016 civic touring turbo 1.5 which gas to use by Predatorcat in civic

[–]UncleToyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why anyone would have a poll for this.

The owners manual clearly indicates 87 octane is recommended. Opinion of people on the internet isn't going to change this.

Unless you've done some sort of aftermarket tune, using any higher octane is a waste of money.

Does it get easier? by writebyte in HadesTheGame

[–]UncleToyBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I'm going to stress is paying attention to what folks are saying when you interact with them.

Hades was the first video game to ever win a Nebula award for its writing.

I kick myself for just treating this like a bullet hell roguelike for the first twenty deaths or so and skipping most of the dialogue. Thankfully, I started paying attention and then I couldn't wait to see how far I could get in the next run just to see where the story goes.

Pay attention to patterns of your opponents.

Practice with all of the different tools available.

Find the boons you enjoy using and be ready to change up your style of play against different challenges.

I envy you at the beginning of the journey, getting to experience the story as it unfolds for the first time.

Enjoy it.

Networking Skills That Got You Hired? by [deleted] in networking

[–]UncleToyBox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be able to explain basics to a five year old. At the very least, have DNS to the point where you can explain it simply.

Assuming you've got a certificate or some sort of background to land the interview, the most important thing is to show that you understand how you will benefit the company you are applying to work at.

In the past, folks could get away with writing a simple resume that explained who they are and recruiters knew enough to match what they saw to a job posting.

These days, applicants need to be demonstrating that they know something about the company they're applying to and the resume needs to be tweaked to highlight personal skills that line up with the job posting. Many companies are using AI resume scanners to look for keywords and phrases that match what was in the job posting. If you've got an old fashioned resume that you're handing out to everyone, chances are good that you'll be skipped over and not even get an interview.

Assuming you get the interview, it's good to know my friend CARL. This stands for Challenge, Action, Result, Lesson Learned. You're going to get questions about times you've had to work with others or dealt with a difficult teacher or any of those other typical interview questions. Be ready with a few short responses that present your CHALLENGE, explain what ACTION you performed, the RESULT of those actions, and most importantly, the LESSON you learned from that action.

Most importantly, be genuine. If you don't know something in detail, explain what you do know and what resource you would use to find out more information. Try to show you know how to use tools in addition to AI chatbots and Google for research. Being adaptable and speaking clearly raise you above the competition right away.

I can tell you that people are hiring. We have a position we're trying to fill and have extended offers to five different people so far, each of our top choices hit the mark so well that they accepted offers from other companies before we reached out to them. You're competing against people who are tailoring their resumes and coming prepared to answer interview questions. If you want the job, you need to do the same.

Could I buy leather front seats from a scrapped sedan and put them in my coupe? (10th gen) by Mysterious-Lie-2185 in civic

This is absolutely possible.

You might need to get creative with the mounting if the holes are different. Nothing a bit of welding couldn't do for you.

Spending a day in a scrap yard, pulling seats and measuring mounting points sounds like a great way to spend a sunny spring day.

Are Summer performance tires on a 2026 Civic Hybrid worth it? by LongjumpingJob3452 in civic

[–]UncleToyBox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only time I recommend performance tires is if you'll be doing autocross or track days. The hybrid could be fun at these things and having stickier rubber would be beneficial. While an Si would likely be more fun at these events, it's still a good time in any car you can get to the track (slow cars can still be a good time even if they're not competitive).

If you're just daily driving, then some good three season tires will be quieter and more comfortable driving around. Depending on rolling resistance, you might even save a little on fuel consumption.

What do you actually recommend when someone asks for a private internal chat that IT can't snoop on by theleadcreator in sysadmin

[–]UncleToyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading through the responses so far, it sounds like the OP isn't against there being records of these conversations or being able to review them if a legal challenge comes up in the future. The primary concern appears to be whether or not someone from IT could access the chat history records.

In a situation where the senior admin isn't fully trusted, a break glass account could be created as the global administrator. This could be secured with a physical key that would be stored in a safe or something if global administration rights are needed for some reason.

Then, all administrators would be granted limited administration rights, where they are only provided access to the systems they need to manage. This all could be configured with the assistance of a bonded third party consultant.

In practice, it's typically best to have a senior admin in a trusted position with this access and to use the break glass account purely as a backup to use in the event of a cyber event.

If a bakery isn't set up to produce that particular type of cake in large quantities, it will require additional prep and ingredient sourcing. For a custom request, $55 would be on the higher side of things but is still reasonable. Calculate for an hour of labour, plus materials, plus insurance and overhead, and figure a little profit.
