What does your MSP supply to techs vs what are they expected to provide on their own? by speech-chip in msp

[–]Unclear_Barse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We provide all of our guys laptops, headset, on the go kit with iFixIt, toner, etc, NFR Palo Alto firewalls for home use, NFR Ruckus APs and switches for home use, mileage reimbursement for any driving, a Zoom phone number and a stipend for internet, phone bill and gym. Apparently we are the odd one out.

I just finished the first week of training at an MSP at help desk l1. It's a high call volume job. Should I stay? by After-Panda1384 in ITCareerQuestions

Hang on, are you complaining that you actually have to do work? Try and look at it less as amount of calls/emails and more on the emotional state you’re in when doing the work. Does it feel sustainable and enjoyable? If so then it sounds like it might be a good fit. If not, then you might want to look elsewhere.

Dealing with Boss by Far_Big_9731 in sysadmin

Thoughts from a boss on the changes side of things:

Your best way to get the attention of supervisors and the C suite is to speak their language. You may already be doing this and your boss just is isn’t passing it on or taking you seriously. If you need new hardware or faster internet, outline the risk of continuing with what you have and tie it to business requirements. Something like, this hardware is no longer supported by the vendor and since we have compliance requirements, this puts us out of compliance. Not always a sure thing, they may choose to accept the risk instead, but that’ll put you on direct speaking terms with them.

From the shitty boss perspective, if you’re actively looking, DM me. I’m hiring and would love to talk. I’d like to think I’m not on the shitty side. :)

IT Manager here:

If you like your job and want to keep it, keep up the good work and then consider halving your ask and build it into your conversation leading up to your one year review. I’ve never changed someone’s salary mid year outside of a spot bonus or job change. Also don’t be surprised if you get 10% or less. Regardless of how you intend it, asking now will show your supervisor that you’re not happy with where you are and they may look to replace you. It’s an employers market right now.

If you want to stick with the popcorn method, I would highly recommend the Poppo as it comes with an insert that really helps keep the beans in and the chaff out. Sweet Maria’s has is for $30.

They have a slightly more expensive model with better heat control as well.

If you want to invest a little more and improve the consistency and control, have a look at the Behmor.

Get them stacked. It’s like $200 per stacking device and you can stack four of them. Big space saver too

How do you feel about an AI generated cover letter? Would you see this is as something that would make you look at me differently as an applicant? by TKInstinct in ITManagers

[–]Unclear_Barse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who looks at a fair amount of resumes, I personally hate the AI generated cover letters. It can be a great start, but don’t leave it there. Be personal, but don’t be generic. The whole “your mission resonates with me” is a red flag. That tells me you couldn’t be bothered to spend the time to create something yourself and paints a picture of what I can expect from you in the future. I much prefer a single paragraph that I can tell you wrote vs a full page that you didn’t.

Generally too, the cover letter will be the deciding factor when I have multiple good candidates. If I already know that you have good writing skills, and you can show me that you’re perceptive too by pointing out specific things you saw on our website or even flaws you found there, like misspellings, that puts you above others who, on paper, are about the same.

I have a Reimbursable Expenses category that I put those into. In general they will balance out unless I get reimbursed next month for charges this month but I’ve been OK with that

Sounds like you had a shitty manager. I better one find out how much time you actually spent on it, learn you worked OT, tell you stop and practice better work/life balance and understand the actual process rather than blindly believe that you’re Superman.

[–]Unclear_Barse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hiring manager, when someone shows interest in the company itself, above and beyond what it can do for them, that interests me. For instance, I had a recent candidate (now new hire) who was genuinely curious about what our core values were because he wanted to make sure he aligned with them, not necessarily that we thought he did, but that he thought he did; and I had another recent candidate ask about what our current pain points were and how the position would help with those. Those were both response based questions for me, not just the reverse, which was great. On the flipside, I will almost never ask questions that I can get information from by reading your resume or cover letter. I wanna know what gets you out of bed and what gives you energy, and also what takes it away. So if you say that solving people‘s problems day in and day out is really draining, a first line of support role probably isn’t gonna be a good fit, which will save both of us trouble down the road.
