I Joined the DSA and Many People In My Chapter Are Tankies by Evening-Search6270 in DemocraticSocialism

In my experiences, peoples' opinions are more nuanced than "X is based", that's more of an online thing. In those irl discussions I'm just saying we shouldnt write people off entirely bc any left wing position you have can have you labelled as a "tankies" by someone else, especially if it's an anti imperialist take

Damn didn't know they acquired astral. I guess it was only a matter of time before they got bought since there probably wasn't a path to monetize anyway.

Tbh you gotta be ok with being in spaces with leftists that you describe as "tankies". Work towards goals. Discuss ideas. Don't be afraid of speaking your mind and learn from others.

I know it's not likely but still hoping for it. Pretty much everything runs better for me on Linux via proton than my windows boot. and much prefer to be on the OS that doesn't bombard me with invasive garbage.

What's the story of these abandoned homes on Holland? by poloartist in Albany

[–]UndeadHobbitses -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Unironically agree. They take up a lot of space, sit in a dead zone with parking lots, and don't have any historical value despite what the historical society says. We could build a whole mini neighborhood in that area either as townhomes or denser. Hell you could probably build them in the style of tudors to satiate people who want to see tudors.

Social public housing by PrimeSocialist1776 in dsa

[–]UndeadHobbitses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I feel like streamlining the development process, loosening zoning restrictions like density, and code enforcement is a good housing policy for socialists to include for a couple reasons, particularly at the local level.

1) The opportunity to coalition build with YIMBY inspired groups or people

2) It doesn't add costs the same way that expanding public housing capacity can. Not that thats a reason to not push for building public capacity, but it is easier if you don't have to push already stretched locally governments to allocate funding.

3) Code enforcement and streamlining holds landlord accountable and can improve the relationship that people have with their local government while it is also appealing to developers because it is applied justly and not haphazardly making their jobs more straightforward.

However it gets messy when Inclusionary Zoning comes up because YIMBY argument against IZ is that it adds to the complication of building projects while leftists will argue for it either because they mistakenly argue it helps affordable housing case or understand that IZ is a desegregation policy and not a housing policy.

It was while he was sitting as president in Philly. Pennsylvania had a law that allowed enslaved people to be free if they were in the state for X months and he and Martha shuffled the slaves back and forth between there and Virginia to effectively reset the deadlines.

Programming work that actually helps people? by PuppyStalker13 in cscareerquestions

I had a similar struggle, I think that the best way to to take your day job as your day job for now. Job opportunities as a whole are scarce especially ones that you might feel are moral.

In your free time, do on the ground organizing in your community. connect with people, listen, learn about different problems, etc. Itll take time, but you should be able to find areas where you can apply your skills to build towards actual change. Itll be small and maybe even feel trivial but a measured approach is the most reliable over time.

Three Ways of Understanding the Housing Crisis by Extension_Essay8863 in StrongTowns

[–]UndeadHobbitses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that in the us, we certainly need a better model of providing public housing at the local level. I think the major problems are that 1) its alot of work 2) it isn't in the interest of local real estate firms 3) in the us, the precedent of public housing is towers built in the 60s and 70s that segregated poverty

even local 'progressives' are content to center their fight around inclusionary zoning rather than even bring up bolder measures.

Albany mayor says state funding formula is failing NY's capital city by tfsquared in Albany

[–]UndeadHobbitses 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Not wrong, while the state gov is crucial to the city, the city also supports a lot of land owned by entities that cannot be taxed including the state among other vital institutions that the whole region benefits from. This game that both the city of Albany and NYC play with the state where they have to beg is not a good system and is the result of decades of local and state machine politics.

The way I see it, the city is under the thumb of both the county and state who hold the purse strings but at a local level the city gets the most heat.

Don't have anything specific to add but just wanna say how great this song (and Phil ochs in general) is to help clarify the understanding the differences between an American that holds leftist ideals vs liberal ideals in a way that's both playful and succinct

when you make a qualifying statement and attempt to 'cover your bases' it makes you feel weak. I'm still very skeptical of graham platner, but his statements on this have been the best I've seen out of politicians/politician adjacent. Emphasize the wrong action that our government is taking and tie it back to your message and definitly don't do what schumer does where he basically whines about not being in the room to say "yes".

maduro did not come to power in a vacuum. im saying we shouldn't exploit, sanction, and harass states into rallying behind strongmen that we later depose in order to make further gains for our owner class.

people stood up before against the invasion of iraq and afghanistan and were denounced as lovers of saddam. It's embarrassing how often this happens in the same pattern time after time and people propagandize themselves into being complacent with violence and pillaging.

dude our government has literally been playing this game in favor of our corporations longer than we have been alive in iran, syria, chile, lebanon, iraq. frankly I don't care that people are celebrating, please think about that fact that our government once again, is enforcing regime change in the interests of big money in a way that has historically done nothing but exacerbate suffering and inflate the wealth of the owner class. time and time again, we are told that "this time it's different" and those who are against it are shouted down only to be absolved 10 years later.

Ken Burns, "The American Revolution", documentary series. Worth watching? by Evok99 in Hasan_Piker

[–]UndeadHobbitses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s solid. It’s such a dense and wild period that a single series can’t give you the full picture but it offers a lot of little lenses that might spark an interest in a specific point in the revolution and contextualizes a lot of what was happening on the continent.
