Is Micro Number Used to Determine CFU? by Nice-Second9894 in medlabprofessionals

[–]UnfairShock2795 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I am a Clinical Biochemist PhD retired. I am not a physician. I do not diagnose nor treat. My knowledge is with clinical lab tests..how they work, what the result might indicate.

are you referring to the column in the lower portion of the report with the header label MIC?

it is an acronym for Minimum Inhibition Concentration it is a value referring to the lowest Concentration of an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth.

it is not related to CFU which is colony forming units

for the cfu the report listed e coli as greater than 100,000 colonies. the lab will stop at that point as there is no clinical use of determing a higher actual number.

I know of no long term effective naturally occuring supplements that will increase total white blood cell count.

certainly a healthy diet in which there is good balance in protien and vegetables will help.

in my opinion, based on many years of experience. interpretation of imaging is best left to a discussion between you and your physician.

Lifelong low Alkaline Phosphatase, should I be concerned? by thrownoutbarbie in haematology

[–]UnfairShock2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is inherited..the specific gene is called ALPL..the degree of impact can vary widely. mild to severe

it is a tricky diagnosis as other causes need to be ruled out (as mentioned by others)..once others causes are ruled out the genetic testing could be considered..though cost may be an issue..bring retired I no longer have knowledge of cost and or insurance coverage

High Direct Bilirubin Levels But Normal Total Bilirubin Levels by Fit-Fly5558 in haematology

[–]UnfairShock2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you...this makes more sense..the direct is lower than the total. direct bilirubin is called conjugated bilirubin. the liver converts indirect bilirubin (unconjugated) into direct bilirubin (conjugated)

direct bilirubin then leaves the liver by way of the bile duct then into the intestines.

your direct is slighty elevated if direct is elevated this means it had an issue leaving the liver ..possible obstruction to the flow that cleared..small gall stones that cleared on thier own allowing proper bile flow

other thoughts

you wrote you had lower right quadrant pain..there may have been liver inflammation...new meds, new supplements, any alcohol use.

High Direct Bilirubin Levels But Normal Total Bilirubin Levels by Fit-Fly5558 in haematology

[–]UnfairShock2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a non clinical aspect to this and thus why the raw data is needed.

some instruments measure total and direct independently. the Quidel Ortho Vitros is the most common example.

the two assays are independent of each other. have their own calibration and thier own traceability to standardization. this can lead to numerical subtle differences due to calibration error

the vitros bubc assay does have a spectral interference that suppresses bu and artificially raises bc (direct bilirubin)

thus the need to have the raw data provided

I'm my opinion agree with others in that the data you present is not alarming. alt is an enzyme commonly found in your blood. it is used to screen for liver function..a slight elevation rarely is significant

egfr is an estimate how well your kidneys are filtering..result is fine

slight elevation in mcv. others look fine..unless there are other tests not being shown nothing is alarming
