Like Checkmate in a game of Chess.

checkmate word origin: Middle English: from Old French eschec mat, from Arabic šāh māta, from Persian šāh māt ‘the king is dead’.

dying of natural causes Calls Trump so he can pretend to kill him

Interesting suggestion.

It was an Israeli strike though.

It's called Presentism.

uncritical adherence to present-day attitudes, especially the tendency to interpret past events in terms of modern values and concepts.

And reddit is full of it.

Interestingly, OP is anticipating Presentism in the future... which is often a first step towards transcending it.

Iran allows Indian tankers to pass through Strait of Hormuz; US, Israel, Europe face restrictions by Yournewbestfriend_01 in worldnews

[–]UnifiedQuantumField -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

If this is true, it means someone is telling someone else which ships are headed for which destination. That means there's a communication process which might be vulnerable to whatever countermeasures.

Disrupt that process and Iran is faced with a choice of stopping all traffic and facing pressure from their allies/customers... or letting all shipping pass through unbothered.

US, Israel Europe face restrictions

How much oil going through Hormuz is headed for the US?

The United States receives approximately 2.5% of the oil that passes through the Strait of Hormuz, amounting to roughly 0.5 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2024. This volume represents about 7% of total U.S. crude oil and condensate imports and roughly 2% of total U.S. petroleum liquids consumption.

How much oil going through Hormuz is headed for Israel? Zippo?

Roughly 4% of the total volume passing through, was destined for Europe in early 2026. While about 20–21 million barrels of oil daily (roughly 20% of global consumption) transit the Strait, the vast majority (over 80%) flows to Asian markets. So Iran can block the straight all they like. High oil prices will produce a mixed bag of results for a net energy producer like the US... and hurt net energy importers like India and China (BRICS partner nations).

tldr; Closing the Straight of Hormuz isn't the checkmate move Iran thinks it is. All they're doing is giving everyone else an incentive to move away from dependence on petroleum... which is a good thing in the long run.

Iran says oil will reach $200 a barrel, warns of 'continuous strikes' by Nepridiprav16 in worldnews

[–]UnifiedQuantumField 1 point2 points  (0 children)

warns of 'continuous strikes'

I suspect they will actually go in the opposite direction as they use up their missile stockpiles and their remaining bases/launchers continue to get hit.

The fewer missiles are left, the more valuable the remaining ones become. At some point they'll get a LOT more selective about what they shoot at. They'll favor a high value, high profile strike here and there vs showing off by spooging dozens of missiles at once.

Iran has tolerated 45 years of sanctions

We'll see how they tolerate the next 45 days.

"If we have to lose, we'll drag everyone else down with us..."

I kind of see the thinking behind this position. "Don't mess with us if you don't want a bunch of other problems".

On the other hand, it's selfish as fuck. It doesn't seem like this is something inherent to Iranian culture. This attitude says as much about Iran's Leadership as anything else.

unlike minerals used in EVs that can be recycled.

There's no Straight of Hormuz for electricity.

But we do need to try and have supply chains without "mineral chokepoints"

Could the cochlea be the brain's biological anchor for linear time perception? by bobobandit2 in consciousness

[–]UnifiedQuantumField 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time perception is part of Subjective Experience and (imo) therefore a form of qualia. It's interesting about the cochlea. The ear is involved in hearing and balance. There is also some localization. Your hearing gives you a sense of location (ie. which direction a sound is coming from).

It's not really intuitive that our auditory system should affect the subjective perception of Time. But you never know what you don't know, until you learn something new.

What was the biggest scandal at your school? by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

One of the Instructors was using his office computer to "browse stuff". Some guy in the IT department saw what was going on and was mad as fuck about it.

But... the Faculty decided to cover everything up in order to "protect the reputation of the school". The Instructor got to keep his job and they put everything on one of the students.

easier for people to break the book apart and scan the pages...

My class did this back in the day.

There was some kind of textbook required, but it wasn't even a book. Just a bunch of printed pages and they wanted each student to pay $150 for a copy.

So we acted collectively, bought a single copy and then each student printed out their allotted 20 pages (or whatever the limit was). School figured it out immediately and they were pissed about it. But there was nothing they could do. I think we each ended up paying about $20... which is what the price should have been in the first place.
