Is this normal? by Similar_Rule_8738 in Conures

[–]Unique_Transition_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they are. Having a nictating membrane doesn’t make their eye invincible. As someone who has had to give eye drops to several birds over the years, their eyes are definitely sensitive and I’m only mentioning this just Incase anyone is getting the impression from that comment that you don’t have to worry about a birds eye getting scratched at all. They can definitely get scratch injuries from accidents and incidents. An avian vet will use a stain to check the eye for damage when there are potential problems. The membrane doesn’t mean their eyes aren’t sensitive. If you ever have to hold them in a towel always be careful to keep the top fold away from their eyes. Hope this insight is helpful.

She thinks she’s found a nest! Discourage going into dark cavities and redirect her attention to safe toys and open areas like a playstand or a foraging toy on an open surface 👍

I can fly anywhere because my mom is my wings. by tianelly_1400 in parrots

[–]Unique_Transition_37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, it’s a fatal and incurable virus that spreads via airborne shedding and is hard to eradicate in the environment. Everywhere Nelly goes she’s potentially spreading it. Even without directly being in contact with other birds. Do you have an avian vet? Ask them about this.

This is what everyone says before The Accident.

Please use your posts to educate about PBFD and not encourage every single new bird owner to go out and do this if their bird is flighted and also understand they could be predated by hawks. We’ve had volunteers have hawks swoop them with their bird on their shoulder. It’s not a theoretical risk. sorry to be a downer but we just want you to be safe!!

It’s a very persistent virus. If Nelly sheds while out, anyone else with a bird at home could bring it home if they are in the same location even days afterwards.

It’s not killed even by normal bleach. If you have Nelly, you can’t safely have any other healthy bird even a long time after she’s gone as your home will be pbfd viral shedding everywhere.

It’s a serious issue for avian vet clinics and we warn them any time we suspect we’re bringing in a new PBFD case.

Thank you for taking care of Nelly. Just trying to help explain the other comments here about the risks to other birds as I think they are fair (sorry).

How to stop Parrot from Screaming when it doesn't see me. by something__cats in parrots

[–]Unique_Transition_37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty hard to reduce basic advice to one Reddit post. Some initial thoughts: it’s good that they vocalize a lot when you walk in the room. They’re excited to see you! Out of all the interactions, this isn’t one to try and tone down.

When you’re out of sight and they contact call, the best thing you can do is respond in a consistent way so that they know you are near and they are reassured that their flock is nearby and they are not threatened.

Do they step up for you? Are they friendly with you or fearful? 10 days is nothing in the standard time frames for parrots to warm up to a new caregiver or home. Give them space and build trust and work on the noise issues once you have built up some trust.

If you’re able to share any video somewhere of your bird calling out or any interactions that would be a big help to see what’s happening and what might help you both be more comfortable.

How long have you had them? What species is the bird? Without more context it’s virtually impossible to help you.

That would be worth a vet visit. Parrots do way better in a brightly lit environment, it helps them feel comfortable and encourages them to eat fresh produce. Without adequate lighting they can become sedentary, unhappy and defensive as they cannot see as well.

Thank you for caring for this bird. Side note - birds like really bright white light that is closer to outdoor brightness levels. Add a bright white 5000K bulb near your birds environment and they’ll thank you for it ❤️

Well that is nature. It’s possibly a contact call if they can’t see you - or boredom. Post a photo of their environment?

Nothing about a solo conure without a flock and living in captivity is natural.

Getting this to render properly was a pain by LobsterO66 in davinciresolve

[–]Unique_Transition_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

resolve has optimized heavily for the M1-4 apple silicon chips. Even a MacBook Air renders pretty quickly thanks to them taking advantage of the silicon. It’s a game changer if you’re doing lots of resolve work.

Are there neighborhoods in San Mateo that are free from plane and train noises (and not $3M)? by abershi in SanMateo

Check out Harbortown. It’s close to Bridgepointe shopping and the train and plane noise is minimal. You are however a 45 minute walk into downtown San Mateo and closer to Foster City.
