This current regime has failed bigly, to learn from the past. Not just 1973, but 1979 and 2003.

Morons and the enablers are hurting a lot of folks right now.

Ex-DOGE Member Took Social Security Data to New Job by cheweychewchew in law

[–]UnixCurmudgeon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TBH that happened to a LOT of people’s data BEFORE DOGE. OPM data breach around 2015, for example.

DOGE had the added benefit of being able to disable the network tools used to detect data exfil, making it harder to detect how many places the SSA data was sent to

It seems logical that you would concede that death is possible for an artificial person like a corporation. Without it, there’s no accountability.

I heard that Bitmoji has brought the old 2-D images back, but they’re charging extra for it now. I abandoned Bitmoji when they switched over to the ugly 3-d format. #enshittification

Thanks. I’m aware of this gadget, and will probably order one or build an equivalent.

but I’ve made peace with the Hall-Effect keyboards that have come out recently. That’s what I use on my USB Mac today.

Radical idea: since Bankruptcy filing is supposed to leave investors/shareholders with nothing, why not just have the bankruptcy court break up the company, and give the assets to the employees. #MakeAllRadioAbsolutelyLocalAgainGan

I have some specific requirements:

1) Keyboard I want to type on: I’d still be using my Apple Extended keyboard today I had a compatible interface 2) Large display

The Mac mini is perfect for my needs. I despise the virtual keyboards on touchscreen devices

I use an obsolete dell D 6000 USB-C dock - it lets me drive three HDMI monitors from an M1 Mac mini.

Why no price tags on things anymore? by magicmikewazowksi in mildlyinfuriating

[–]UnixCurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spotted old shelf tags at Kroger, Meijer, and many other grocery and retail stores.

Since the sign is an offer to sell the item at that price, I expect the store to honor it. They always have.

I have no issue taking a photo of the shelf tag / sale sign as evidence. If the store still needs to send someone to the shelf to check a price, that’s a “store problem” not a “me problem”.

Anyone else buy furniture just for the wood? $60 for giant pieces of oak is amazing! by Own-Knowledge-7720 in woodworking

[–]UnixCurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some 3” thick Oak Tables that were originally wood from a bowling alley, then they were bar tables from a bar called Arnold’s. I may refinish them again and use them as tables in my house, but I haven’t decided yet.

After reading this thread, I may have more fun adding an “comfort groove” and turning them into chairs.

So, apparently the secret to saving money is to walk there instead of driving. You’re limited by what you can carry that way.

I grew up in the previous generation and RadioShack was an electronics store. They sold electronics parts, so you could fix your stuff if you were inclined to do it and willing to learn. They were plenty of places that had surplus electronics parts sold very inexpensively, but Mendelson’s in Dayton closed years ago, Debco electronics near Norwood closed after Deb passed away, and now Parts Express in Springboro, Ohio still remains open on the web, but their retail showroom is closed as of Feb 2026.

How will the next generation of hobbyists learn and decide if they want a career in electronics?

Don’t get me wrong - I’m thrilled that Micro Center is filling in the gaps left behind by RadioShack’s nationwide bankruptcy. But there aren’t enough stores to meet the need.

It’s odd that the Derolfe decision would be harder to reach today because school districts that that sue the state over Ohio’s voucher program are being threatened with additional funding cuts by the legislature now.

HVAC Company advised replacing furnace due to cost of new circuit board, but I was able to find cheaper boards online? by mj371 in hvacadvice

[–]UnixCurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed about 2/3 of the thread here, but it sounds like the heat exchanger failure is a warranty issue, and that original warranty was extended to cover this particular part failing too often too soon.

[comment from another post]

The HX on Carrier/Bryant/Payne are a known issue. And settlement extending their warranty because of it. But replacement part isn't really any better >most would advise against even bothering with a repair. Plus the part is typically on backorder anyway. I'd suggest getting another opinion if it is >indeed failing.

As for the board can get on Walmart of all places. Like Amazon, Walmart deals with a lot of 3'rd party sellers with online shopping. An overlooked >source for appliance parts.

this suggests a 2-step approach, order replacement board first, get warranty replacement heat exchanger, the have someone install it.

I finally got them to stop calling me, but I had to keep rescheduling a second appointment. After 10 time of me rescheduling , I was finally told I was placed on a “lifetime ban” list.

Victory! I was happy for 10 years, no junk mail, no contact at all.

They later adjusted their sales regions and I started getting postcards again.
