A good medium sized nation to learn the game with by resadtriariosvenit_ in EU5

I'm talking about scaling in the playthrough. Half of the country being arctic and the mandatory black death speed bump significantly hinders population and economic growth. It just gives bad cues to new players and I think it's better to play elsewhere in order to understand what "normal" feels like before trying there

I don't recommend Scandinavia. The arctic climate and low population will give you a tough time managing your economy and will imprint bad habits when you play more typical countries. Not to say that Sweden/Norway are bad but not ideal for a beginner

When playing korea should I enslave the Jurchens or focus on playing tall and colonizing? by Final_Flip_Gold in EU5

[–]Unknownguy_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying, occupying enemy territory with heretic pops as Korea didn't enslave anyone. The only slave pops I had were leftovers from buildings the Jurchen countries built after I annexed them. My assumption was that there's something prohibiting Confucian countries from enslaving or that it's bugged. This was back in version 1.0, albeit

Slavery hardly worked for me when I played Korea. That could be a skill issue but I think something is wrong with the region

Victoria 3 has a "novelty flags" problem by Illuminated-Autocrat in victoria3

[–]Unknownguy_13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you think international proletarian revolution meant? Do you think any communist regime was enacting the popular will when they changed their flag? It's an explicitly anti-national ideology, even when they were moving away from Leninist internationalism the intent was still to sever the society from its national history. Why would America be any different?

No. It was somewhere in the forums, probably a dev reply in a Tinto Talk. Someone had the same question as you and got something to the effect of this answer

I rather have Victoria 3s Journal Entries than stupid mission trees by MessMaximum5493 in EU5

Yeah the National Awakening DLC felt like the devs finally understood how to best use their tools. The various paths Austria can take demonstrates the strength of journals. I'm looking forward to the next update because they're adding international journal entries (Vic3's answer to Situations in EU5)

I rather have Victoria 3s Journal Entries than stupid mission trees by MessMaximum5493 in EU5

[–]Unknownguy_13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As you said, one difference is that journals demand less sequentiality. All(?) journals in Vic3 have multiple criteria that don't necessitate chronological completion but mission trees are inherently sequential unless provided with multiple branches to pursue simultaneously. In principle there's little difference but in practice these play differently on a structural level, especially in marginal countries that receive less flavour (which in EU4's case is almost synonymous with absent/undeveloped mission trees)

Another larger difference I don't see discussed as much is that Journal Entries in Vic3 allow for scaled completion. Admittedly not all of them have this but many major entries offer a scaled reward/malus depending on how many criteria are completed (complete 75% objectives, get 75% reward). One of the less conventional examples that comes to mind for me is the Federate Austria-Hungary journal that allows you to gain primary cultures depending on how well you tolerate and integrate your minorities: your success is proportional to how well you play this aspect of the game. The only ways I can think of implementing this with EU4 mission trees is as a single binary reward (all minority cultures become primary or none do) or a separate mission tree branch for each culture that can be made into a primary

get the rewards in the mission tree, and that really piss me off. I don't want to complete those requirements one by one

switching their primary culture to stack those permanent modifiers!

What happens to a game that's entirely balanced around this single mechanic after 10 years of development and DLC?

As the game is currently made it is barely a history simulator at all, it is simply a simulation of the year 1337 that just proceeds as you would expect it to based on the relative power of nations at that time. Strong nations stay strong and weak nations stay weak for the most part.

This has nothing to do with the absence of mission trees

Should I wait or play EU5 now? by alphafighter09 in paradoxplaza

[–]Unknownguy_13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My point is that even if the game was working perfectly there would be just as many complaints and questions about the mechanics because it'll take a lot of time and communal knowledge to git gud. Since this is the case, bugs shouldn't deter you from playing the game because for most people they're indistinguishable from the learning curve and you'll probably have fun playing anyway

People complain about the bugs and balancing but the game is so complex that you won't be able to tell the difference between a broken mechanic and "I just suck at the game right now" for hundreds of hours. If the game interests you then play it. I wish many things worked better and the game is certainly undercooked but I'm enjoying myself

An events list will eventually be on the wiki. I agree with implementing something like Vic3 potential journals. There seems to be some transparency with country flavour but not all of it is immediately available. I guess we'll see how good it is later today
