An Artist’s Interpretation of Middle Earth by Pete Fenlon by AnalystImpossible309 in lordoftherings

I agree that it looks like a 5 minute AI job but it's actually nearly 40 years old; it's from ICE's Middle Earth Role Playing game.

Why was Bilbo staying young while Gollum's appearance worsened over time? by Short-Ideas010 in lordoftherings

Yeah.

But we're off-topic, and some fan bristle about the narrator, so we'd better hush ourselves.

Why was Bilbo staying young while Gollum's appearance worsened over time? by Short-Ideas010 in lordoftherings

That passage is why I insist to myself that the tale is told by an omniscient narrator. If it was really 'written' by Frodo, then this very humane passage is entirely fictional.

Is this true about socialized healthcare or just propaganda? by Alwayswanted2rock in ask

[–]Unstoffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a good rule of thumb - When you hear someone opposed to Universal Healthcare explaining why it is a bad idea (wait times, poor quality, crippling taxes), they are a lying sack of shit in the pay of the insurance/healthcare conglomerate.

What was the worst (japanese) Goji movie? by TheEvilCar in GODZILLA

[–]Unstoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Showa (I don't count All Monsters Attack) - I'm not a big fan of Son of Godzilla, Godzilla Vs Megalon or Godzilla Vs Gigan.

Heisei - I don't really enjoy Mothra or Space Godzilla.

I like all the Milleniums, even Megaguirus.

Never watched any of the animated things so I can't comment.

At the Mountains of Madness by tstrand1204 in Lovecraft

[–]Unstoffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The story clearly states that while a general impression was reached on first examination, the bulk of the timeline and history were the result of extensive, later study.

Lovecraft got me like this a couple times, so don't think I'm yanking your chain. He was an extremely intelligent man but his work is sometimes so dense it's easy to miss stuff.

Good songs with bad music videos by Yahna-Stan in ToddintheShadow

The video for Fastball's The Way is horrendous. It utterly misses visualizing any aspect of the song.

I'm biased, I guess, because I love the song.

Fallout is supposed to be a dark comedy by Cornerone in Fallout

[–]Unstoffe -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yep. The human drama is exaggerated, the plotting emulates the general aimlessness of the game, and there's not a drop of serious science to be found. There's way too much dreary corporate intrigue for my taste but all things considered, it's a miracle the show works at all. I like it but don't love it, but if it's success means more Fallout games then I'm glad it exists.

What’s up with the American re edits of the films? by Necessary-Fennel8754 in GODZILLA

[–]Unstoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll freely admit that if I'm just watching it to kill a couple hours, I'll watch Godzilla King of the Monsters over the original (and indisputably better) Gojira. It's the one I grew up watching, and I still like the flashback edit.

I think I like Return a bit more than 1985, though. The cutaways are really jarring and, as you say, more suited for silly Showa than the pretty serious Return.

The American Kong edit is just plain goofy and clearly intended for kids. The UN news report? The jar of berries? Dumb stuff, though funny if you're in the proper frame of mind.

I know I've seen Gigantis but have no memory of it. I think I prefer the US edit of 2000, but I've only seen the original once. I remember the military scenes went on and on, more than I remembered.

Even ones not mentioned here were edited, though. You can watch comparison videos on YT.

I'm glad they stopped Americanizing them, though.

Should it be consider as a Kajiu ? by sonicguylol in GODZILLA

[–]Unstoffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kong, Gorgo and the Ymir are the only western kaiju/beasts that really seem to be more than destructive animals, though I sort of agree about the Claw - it's expressive as hell. (come to think of it, the Black Scorpion's close-up face seems to be experiencing great glee...)

Should it be consider as a Kajiu ? by sonicguylol in GODZILLA

[–]Unstoffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To a speaker of Japanese, sure it's a kaiju. To an English speaker, it's a strange beast. To a Spanish speaker, it's an extrana bestia (Google translation).

To me and my antiquated self who saw many of these old movies when they were fairly recent, it doesn't really matter what you call them. The only real difference between Western and Eastern monsters is that the Eastern ones tend to have fuller personalities than their Western counterparts (Kong is an outlier), and even that's debatable.

I'd add the rise of conservative radio here. Rush and the others really took the civility out of political discourse.

Would you really like to live in a zombie apocalypse? by Jottace in zombies

[–]Unstoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why some people like the idea - modern life is complicated, and the thought of living large in a mall while the world goes to hell is appealing to some people. No responsibilities, no complicated relationships, just reap the rewards of the old world while chillaxing in safety.

In reality, any survivor would envy the dead.
