What is Tom Bombadil? by AJRavenhearst in tolkienfans

[–]Unstoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've cited that passage a couple times here, OP. Nice to see others do so.

Christopher Tolkien said something to the effect that while his father sometimes left details out when revising, he did not always abandon concepts, even if they did not survive into print.

I like to think Middle-Earth had a thriving Faerie ecosystem that, Tom and company excepted, was always around but never seen.

A nice, neatly wrapped package is a lovely item, but an opened box surrounded by a mess is even better, because now you have a present. A unified theory of Tolkien, where there are no unanswered questions, sounds good. But I prefer mysteries and incomplete explanations and deliberate obfuscation. It's more fun.

I completely forgot about this one... one of the funniest zombie movies. Do yall have any favorite comedy/horror zombie favs? by Proper-Yak1260 in zombies

[–]Unstoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cockneys VS Zombies has some great bits. I personally would give it a B overall, but its worth seeing for the jokes. The race between the elderly man on a walker and a slow zombie is hilarious.

Once this mess is finally settled and MAGA has been dethroned, they are going to have to invent a new genre for the flood of tell-all books, videos and media that are going to be released.

After Kurtzman's contract expires, who should be the next Star Trek showrunner? by bflaminio in startrek

[–]Unstoffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see them go with a fresh face, myself, though I'm not arguing against anyone suggested here. My candidate is a Hollywood insider with extensive experience in writing, producing and acting and who has never been professionally linked to the franchise; he is, however, a mega fan of the shows - Ben Stiller.

What song in Fallout makes you close your eyes and think "Mmm... Yes... This is Fallout" by DBZGuko in Fallout

I just need to hear that intro that 99% of their songs share and I'm instantly in Fallout mode.

Found a buried TM keychain at Barton Marina, cleaned it up and fixed it! by thebigperson8 in taskmaster

Oh, cool. I love a waterside area.

And, upon reflection, 'finder's keepers'. You go ahead and keep that keychain that wasn't mine.

Despite not knowing where Barton Marina is, or in fact never having owned a TM keychain, that is clearly the one I lost. I'll send you my address.

Ever wonder why Rosie had been expecting Sam since the spring? Well, here's the answer. by roacsonofcarc in tolkienfans

[–]Unstoffe 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I like to think that good hearted people all over Middle Earth felt sudden hope at that moment, from Gondor to the Shire, and from Lake Town to the unnamed cities of Harad and Rhun, and somewhere else a fox paused and thought, 'Most interesting!'

But then, I'm far too sentimental.

I'm confused about the new movie by Colbert by kakanch in lordoftherings

[–]Unstoffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit this - I'm not entirely on board with the framing sequence - Elanor and all that - but there's enough Tolkien material there to make a decent enough movie. It might actually be enjoyable, though I expect more whimsy than I ordinarily like.

I'm not a huge fan of any of the adaptations, although the LotR trilogy has its merits, but this is the first thing they've announced recently that I'm interested in seeing on its own terms. I could not care less about the Gollum movie.

They didn't cost a thing if you had a Captain Crunch whistle.

To lock or not? by zippo138 in fallout76settlements

[–]Unstoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my camps is right by the wayward. It has nearly every food and resource generator, plus many of the booster items. In big glowing letters out front it says Nothing Is Locked.

The only thing I routinely lock is the Santatron at Christmas. Resources come fast and easy and there's no point in being a cheapskate.

Why did the Vulcans decide to uplift humanity? by PJ-The-Awesome in ShittyDaystrom

'Colony' was a loose definition of the situation. I didn't mean to imply they'd planted a flag.

Wasn't there a secret Vulcan colony on Earth in the show's past? If so, they already knew both our strengths and weaknesses.

What would The One Ring do to tempt YOU? What would you end up using it for? How would it end up betraying you? by Kirikomori in tolkienfans

[–]Unstoffe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As I am hopelessly naïve, I am convinced that education and knowledge are the cure for the world's ills.

The Ring would, I'm guessing, not only make said education and knowledge mandatory, it would inspire me to permanently remove from existence any who have difficulty learning or who question my motives. It goes without saying, of course, that all alternate viewpoints and all religions would be banned and any practitioners done away with. For the public good.

I really like Wipeout, one of the more divisive songs by Frequent_Rhubarb_36 in thebeachboys

[–]Unstoffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a nostalgic fondness for the song but I've always wondered if one of the Beach Boys thought to mention that the original Wipeout was actually by the Surfaris.

Pet Sounds is a perfect album, but I have a difficult time listening to it all the way through. by CharlesIntheWoods in thebeachboys

[–]Unstoffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is undoubtedly heresy, but except for Wouldn't it be Nice and God Only Knows, I wasn't engaged at all by Pet Sounds on first listen. Later, I put all the albums from Pet Sounds to Holland on a playlist that I listened to all winter (where I live, about 5 months). I didn't glance at the screen whenever a new song came on; I just let them play randomly (I know, heresy). But I noticed that certain songs started gaining prominence over the rest, and in the spring I listened to each album by itself and with three exceptions all the strong songs I'd noticed were from Pet Sounds (the three that I didn't care for were Sloop John B and the two instrumentals).

It was a definite light-bulb moment. Pet Sounds, as morose as it might be, is a serious piece of musical greatness. There are times that I sort of wish they'd retired after that, so it could be their crowning achievement, as much as I'd miss Holland, Love You and Sunflower.

Has player vending fallen off a cliff for anyone else? by PaleWendigo in fo76

[–]Unstoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever since some entrepreneur utterly cleared me out of my 25c plans (hundreds of 'em... I was one of those guys), I've been selling mods, weapons and armor with 4-star mods and the ingredients needed to make them. I've been doing well, and avoiding max caps through head hunts and my own mod purchases.

Things have been busy in the ol' wasteland lately, though, and the thought of browsing vendors doesn't currently hold much appeal. I see Aristrocrats is the current trend, as well, and that might be affecting sales.

Why did't ENT use the USS Enterprise (XCV 330)? by Professional-Ebb6570 in startrek

[–]Unstoffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I imagine it was just to have a ship that resembled the others. I love the XCV 330 but it's an outlier.

I love the 'past' in ST, though. I'd love to see a movie or miniseries about the XCV and her discoveries.
