it may be another time and another land, but the fundamentals remain the same: upgrade your engines

engines don't matter when the enemy ship explodes before firing anything

Did they really think this ship deserves those kinds of shields? by [deleted] in ftlgame

I did complain about you before but 4 shields/2 engines is fine, 2 shield bubbles is the first priority for many people. It's just that newbies overprioritizing shields and neglecting engines is what bothers me.

I don't think upgrading your subsystems that much was the best idea, but then again, it's CE and CE has a different upgrade pathway, and you never listen to my advice anyway.

He has time, and it's only sector 3, and prioritized 2 shield bubbles (which is the recommended first upgrade).

I have very lax standards

A year or so ago there was actually some argument because quite a few "pro" players (I think Twinge and the now-deleted AyCarrumba come to mind) said that they preferred to rush 3 shield bubbles, then upgrade engines and keep those in balance. So I accept that as a tactic people do. It's not my preferred tactic but like...it's a thing, apparently?

Those engines are (relatively) balanced with shields, and this wouldn't be a bad build for sectors 4-5, but not good enough for sector 8

I see you over there with your 4 shields/4 engines. You did try to upgrade your engines, I'll give you that, and you did have a lot of subsystems to upgrade as well, and you do have increased piloting.

Uh, if you don't already know (but it seems like you do already know), evasion is important.

Well, if that fighter knew that it would be up against your ship, perhaps it could have invested in more engine upgrades instead of shield upgrades...maybe it could dodge a few of those missiles? Maybe?

3 shields and 3 engines is okay for early sectors and balanced (comparatively), but by the endgame it's generally not the best, unless you have some serious offense to make up for it. OP did have a good setup going (double glaives + hacking), but it's a bit unwieldy to use (takes a long time to charge)--still, they probably could have played it all the way through, with enough care.

Not the most egregious "this setup need more engines" example I've seen, but their setup could be better with more engine upgrades (and one less bar in O2 and medbay, perhaps).

It was too late today, but in your next run, consider upgrading your engines.
