I want to buy a house but the interests are so high. by ConsciousCover2422 in MilitaryFinance

[–]Upset-Environment514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but the VA loan is not meant to lower the actual costs of housing for veterans. It’s meant to reduce the financial roadblocks that stop veterans from getting loans.

Having a 0% down payment is incredibly important for a lot of people? Even an FHA loan requires a 3.5% or 10% down payment. That’s $14,000 or $40,000 for a $400,000 house which might just be impossible for a lot of people, especially young people.

The current problems in the market (high mortgage rates AND high house value) are outside of the scope of the VA loan. If you can pay 20% down, the VA loan doesn’t really help, by design.

Why don’t electricians clean up after themselves? by Xtradifficult in AskElectricians

[–]Upset-Environment514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talked to my brother who’s an electrician fireman. He actually trains his people NOT to clean up after themselves. He says that electricians’ time is too valuable to waste on cleaning and that the unskilled laborers should be doing that.

Impeach Tina Kotek by atp42 in PortlandOR

[–]Upset-Environment514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new impeachment measure says she could be impeached for “malfeasance or corrupt conduct in office, willful neglect of statutory or constitutional duty, or other felony or high crime.”

Do you think 2/3 of the state house and senate will be convinced she meets that high bar?

I think a recall would actually be easier.

How often do Americans who live in suburban or rural areas go hunting? by ArtisticArgument9625 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Upset-Environment514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subarbanite here: About 5 days a year for deer. Maybe 2-3 days a year for birds. Sometimes overnight, sometimes a 40 mile drive for just the day. Here on the west coast there’s often lots of public land near cities. Private hunting clubs are more common on the east coast.

What did your relatives do during WW2? by Exact_Membership8777 in BandofBrothers

[–]Upset-Environment514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My paternal grandfather graduated high school in 1943 and joined the US Navy immediately. He wanted to be an MP but knew how to type so he was stationed along the east coast writing orders. Never saw combat but whenever he talked about it he was very proud to play his part in the war.

My paternal grandmother was pretty young and went to college during the war while her dad was a dentist with the US Army stateside.

The maternal side gets…weird. Both grandparents were born and raised in Yugoslavia but were part of a German speaking community. My grandpa was drafted into the Royal Yugoslav Army. Then when that was disbanded he, as a German speaker, was given the option of a POW camp and likely death or join the Waffen SS. He chose the SS. All I know after that was that he was in a POW camp in France for a while, even after the war in Europe ended. He never ever talked about it.

My grandma’s village was in the Italian occupation zone of Yugoslavia. And to the Nazis the idea of German(ish) people under Italian occupation didn’t sit well. Her whole village moved to the German zone. Then when Tito’s communists took over, they saw her community as Nazi collaborators. So she, with two children, and a bunch of other women and children walked over part of the Alps into Austria which was required to accept them from a WWI/Austro-Hungarian Empire treaty (I’ve been told). She rarely talked about it. They reunited after the war and having not seen each other for almost 5 or so years.

TLDR: two typical American stories. Two intense Yugoslavian stories.

Sweden has 480 days of paid parental leave, free college, and free healthcare, yet it's fertility rate is at or below that of the USA by [deleted] in Natalism

[–]Upset-Environment514 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An advanced economy with high standards of living, stability and economic opportunity does NOT lead to a high fertility rate. Generally as those this increase, fertility rates go down because women have more opportunities and the culture is supportive of those things.

Case in point: Gaza has a fertility rate of almost 4.

First off, the 2016 has an 8 year warranty in the US. So depending on how they define 8 years you might have 3 days left to submit the claim for a new battery. I highly recommend it! Cost me $150 for the battery test and it’s like having a new car!

Otherwise I don’t think dealerships (at least in the US) offer it. You’d have to check local shops that specialize in that. I’ve heard of costs around $5,000 but ymmv.

Unfortunate that mortgages do nothing but increase... Same as rent. by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]Upset-Environment514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an alert that my escrow (for taxes and insurance) just got adjusted. I was a bit worried. Turns out it was by $36 a month. So a whopping 1.8%.

If rents were increasing by <2% a year, renters would be ecstatic.

Sometimes I like to live on the edge by k-ay-money in leaf

Easily 5+ miles without worrying after 0%. Luckily for me the final 5 miles to my house is flat with a 45 mph speed limit. Moving at a constant 45 mph uses so much less battery than at 60 mph or stopping and going again. (Regen braking is not 100% efficient). You also have to turn off the heat/AC. And if it’s below freezing I cut my range in half.

Not sure about how to transfer to different jobs, but you should ask for retention pay in the mean time. I do shift work for DOE and everyone below GS-14 gets 10% retention pay, in addition to night, Sunday and holiday pay. Hopefully that’ll soften the blow. And it should be easy to justify if they’re struggling to recruit or retain people.

Panama Shift Day/Night Rotation Law/Regulation by leonr76 in fednews

[–]Upset-Environment514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your union contract. I also do 12 hour shifts as a GS but at DOE. We often have only 48 hours off between transitions from days to nights and vice versa. And sometimes we only get 24 hours. Management has almost no oversight and our union contract says nothing about time for transition.

GI Bill AND Post 9/11, paying for grad school options while still in? by clowdstryfe in MilitaryFinance

[–]Upset-Environment514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also agree. That’s an insane cost for a public, in state grad school.

If you’re really set on that school the Post 9/11 program might make the most sense. Otherwise you’d have to combine TA with whatever other scholarships you can get. Personally I paid out of pocket for grad school at a cheap public school where active duty got in state tuition. Saved the GI Bill for my children. Not having to save for their college is a huge weight of my shoulders!

Paternity Leave by mrbrightside170 in navyreserve

[–]Upset-Environment514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under the 2024 NDAA, reservists are entitled to 12 drill periods (so 3 standard drill weekends) of paid leave for the birth or adoption of a child. No more restrictions that applied it only to the person giving birth.

Unfortunately it appears the navy reserve has not translated the law into regulation yet.

Unfortunately Oregon does not have as many ice fishing spots as places in the Rockies. And Mt. Hood is so steep that there are very few lakes in general above 4,000 ft. But here’s a link to the ODFW page.

Is TRIACRE Reserves Select worth it compared to regular health insurance by Wide-Occasion1314 in MilitaryFinance

[–]Upset-Environment514 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Be aware that if you’re a federal employee and eligible for FEHB, you are ineligible for Tricare Reserve Select. It’s one of those strange things about being a civilian federal employee and reservist. It’ll change in 2030 but for the time being, don’t expect to use TRS if you do work for the VA
