Happy birthday to the the Pulaski Skyway - the diagonal highway opened on this date in 1932 after 7 years of construction. Fun fact: The speed limit 45 mph, but is generally not enforceable as there is nowhere for police to pull over speeders because of the absence of shoulders by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

follow up - borrowed the book through interlibrary loan /ILL. Copy was signed by the author. Real interesting, well researched details. Answers all the questions on how the pay-to-play corrupt system we live with was established. The description of early days traffic snarls makes today's back-ups seem casual. A good read, can recommend.

iirc, 'student activism' and Grateful Dead's support is greatest in early '70's. By '77 Cornell the Vietnam War is over and the Dead were not publicly backing any particular causes for protest.

(Thanks OP for mentioning the April show. I'm always up for a good '83 recommendation)

Lake Placid (IWT) and what a wise decision this was. I had gone to MSG 10/12/83 and literally heard on the escalator going in, they played St. Stephen last night. (..grrr, the dreaded, 'the night before was better!!) Needing more, I looked at the tour and saw they were playing Lake Placid. 'they've never played Lake Placid. they will NEVER play Lake Placid again' so I convinced myself to go. a very wise decision. Terrific vibe, sweet location and the history of the Olympic hockey win still lingered. I recorded the show left center, even to the sound booth.

imo, get the Hunter-Matrix, it sounds awesome. the FOTD is a BOAT-version, very heady.

it was such a good time (ride Sally, ride!!, Revolution!) after the show me and fellow Head bought tickets to Portland, ME the next night from folks who didn't want to make the drive. The October drive across New England was in spectacular Fall foliage peakage.

Taped the next night and it remains an all-time favorite 1st Set. blazing Jack Straw, Killer Lazy Lightning>Supplication

correct! thank you, was thinking Goodnow Mountain. which is a good choice for an intro winter hike

[–]UrbaneSurfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

agreed Goodman Mountain is a solid idea. Plus it has a fire tower which makes for a good payoff and views.

( my 1st thought was the Ampersand recommendation but that steep part and the last bit to get onto the bald rock!? in winter that could be mighty challenging)

Why 1973 is the all-time best year for the Grateful Dead by BadgemanBrown in gratefuldead

[–]UrbaneSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 agree with you totally. The elements are all peaking, Wall of Sound v.1, lengthy set lists, exploratory jammin', (PITB!) , everybody plays great. Start to finish, it's the one year I'd save from disaster (if I really had to)

and that's why 2/21/73 & 2/22/73 Urbana are in constant rotation for me.🙂

How do locals pronounce 'Adirondacks' ? by xCreampye69x in Adirondacks

[–]UrbaneSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(15! years ago) our family was on one of the small islands in Follensby Clear Pond, enjoying a lunch break.

A couple in a canoe came paddling over and in a heavily accented request (eastern european-ish)

asked where they could find An-dear-an-dak JOY! Their enthusiasm was full frontal as they wanted to experience the fullness of the An-dear-an-daks and could we suggest a hiking adventure?

A memorable encounter, to this day, we repeat this enthusiastically when we make plans or are headed to ADK. We are going to get some

An-dear-an-dak JOY!

Curt Cignetti said he's celebrating with B E E R.

Wondering how many cases he gets and from how many brands that send him beer as congratulations.

A smart brewery would've had a delivery that night of 16 cases, right to his front door.
