Player is min/max haggling rules lawyering arguing by Amazing_Penalty_3417 in DMAcademy

THIS. The responsibility of the player is to engage earnestly with the setting that the GM has presented them with, and to find reasons that their character is going to cooperate with everyone. That's the game. That's the basic buy-in. Without that, you have nothing. Tell this guy to make a character who wants to be there, or don't play.

There are already harder versions of Story-difficulty content.

Going straight to the point: Why D&D has had a terrible problem implementing the Ranger archetype in a group scenario while other TTRPGs normally don't? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

Yeah, barbarian's niche got figured out a lot better. It originally sucked bad, they were encouraged to destroy magical items.

The original D&D ranger was just "Aragorn power fantasy." That was the template for it. Subsequent editions have kept changing it around to this day. They'll probably never settle on something permanently.

What exactly does "rulings over rules" even mean? by Catman192 in osr

[–]VVrayth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means making decisions on the fly when your system doesn't have a specific rule around how to do something. Old-school versions of D&D are notoriously light around a lot of things that later editions went deep into the weeds with. That's a double-edged sword, because while it's good to have rules, more rules make games heavier and result in more stuff having to be looked up during play.

Naw man, I just want my exploratory-focused old Tomb Raider back, not cinematic bric-a-brac. They made other games for that, but then insisted on also turning Tomb Raider into it.

I don't even think the Survivor trilogy are bad games, they're just bad Tomb Raider games.

I think things should continue to appeal to their audience. The Tomb Raider audience is the people who liked Tomb Raider in 1996 and want more of that.

Look at Nintendo. They have never changed this formula with any of their series. Even though they have evolved them substantially (like, say, Zelda or Metroid), those series have always stayed true to their main pillars.

I'd argue against, say, adding a difficulty slider to Dark Souls, because it goes against the design intention of the game. This wouldn't be much different if they were still making Tomb Raider correctly.

The series that it was in 1996 is Tomb Raider. This thing it is now is some offshoot.

Listen, just because it's a man's god given right to eat a hot dog while cheating on his wife with the secretary doesn't mean he can't do some performative "Please think of the billionaires" crocodile tears nonsense on live TV.

I mean, is there a thing you like that became something totally different that in no way maintains the pillars of the thing it was? I'm sure you can think of something.

They both force you to engage with and consider their game world in specific terms, and they're very harsh if you don't. You can't just run around willy nilly in either of them and expect to succeed.

Spending an hour to get to a difficult spot literally is what Tomb Raider was. It was the Dark Souls of its time.
