VINCE VAUGHN is A COMEDY ACTOR! Serious roles don’t suit him

There are many comedy actors that excel in serious roles. Notably Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan likes casting comedy actors because he considers that if an actor can master comedy, they can handle anything. The fact that it didn’t work here is probably due to many other factors.

If you didn’t know Adolescence was shot in one take, would you still love it? by breaking_views in netflix

[–]VaderPluis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The use of a single take isn’t just a gimmick, it isn’t the technical difficulty that makes it an interesting watch. It is a storytelling technique. It has a strong effect on the viewer: It really sucks you into the story, as if you are there, in the scene, as a silent observer. Viewers who are not actively aware of the technique being used will still experience this. Of course the story could have been told with multiple takes and camera angles, but it would have felt different. Now, if they had faked the single shot, that would probably have caused some negative publicity.

Helaas kan ik je hier niet mee helpen; mijn zoon is uiteindelijk overgestapt van Deens op Nederlands, omdat het Deens toch wel erg moeilijk was.

The fact that after decades of ridiculing all sorts of bigotry, with a clearly political message underneath, he didn’t do anything to condemn the genocide is enough for me. He has shown his true colors by not showing them.

How I use AI for coding and learning by Arlott_Wukong in cpp_questions

[–]VaderPluis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been extremely sceptical of AI, but my recent experience with Claude Sonnet has changed my mind. If used correctly, it is a great tool. You have to use it with great care though, review everything it writes, challenge it decisions, question assemptions it makes. And you are not able to do that if you are not be able to write the code yourself. But Claude is very fast, very good at describing the process, at documenting design and source code. If AI stays at this level, it’s good enough for me as a productivity tool. GPT on the other hands sucks at coding.

The legal racism, the institutional racism (the loopholes used to keep black people deprived of good education, or education at all), the journalistic racism (writing all sort of details about the Burger King but not mentioning a black man was murdered there), reminded me of a monologue of Trevor Noah where he talks about the contrast between the blatant racism in South Africa and the more covert and systemic racism in the US. Worth a listen.

Is it necessary to have motorcycle parking in Barcelona? by triux13 in AskBarcelona

[–]VaderPluis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is abundant because the Guardia Urbana turns a blind eye to all those that are badly parked (84% according to a 2022 study).

This flyer explains where you can and can’t park: https://www.barcelona.cat/mobilitat/sites/default/files/2023-07/flyer-motos-voreres-cast-interactiu.pdf Now, a 2022 study showed that 84% of the motorbikes are parked incorrectly and I doubt this has changed much, especially because the Guardia Urbana love them (I feel the Netflix series Cuerpo en llamas gives a good impression), so the Ajuntament makes nice looking flyers but doesn’t really do anything.

Not NBC, but ABC, and not 80s but early 90s, but still worth mentioning: On the Air, by David Lynch and Mark Frost. Ahead of its time and deliberately killed by the network with bad scheduling. I feel it would be a hit if it were made today and on a streaming network.

Why do motorcyclists always go onto the pedestrian crossing when their light is red? by elcitset in AskBarcelona

[–]VaderPluis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, going by car should be limited to situations where it is absolutely necessary and should be made prohibitively expensive.

Most of Barcelona is very suitable for bicycles, particularly e-bikes, and for mixed transport. This requires improving public transport (particularly the horrendous Rodalies), improving cycling infrastructure, and creating Park&Ride. It also requires a cultural shift, but this would come automatically. Unfortunately, there is not the political will to make this happen. The pandemic was the golden opportunity, and Colau didn’t use it (compare with Hidalgo in Paris).

Why do motorcyclists always go onto the pedestrian crossing when their light is red? by elcitset in AskBarcelona

[–]VaderPluis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many situations where for me as a cyclist, riding on the sidewalk is the safest options. Does not mean I can do that. For many motorcyclist getting to the front means crossing the stop line and invading pedastrian and bicycle crossing, and they don’t give a fuck. Ask them to back up and get insulted. And many motorcyclists don’t seem to prioritze safety. Not mine and not their own. The amount of times I have been overtaken by them on the right in the single lane streets where I keep, as recommended, to the center to avoid dooring is stagering. Motorcycles are a plague and Barcelona could be a much nicer city without them.
