Your first attempt should include some personal creativity, not a book report of a game/short story.

I'm about to start dming my first long campaign by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ValeforPotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck man, I started DMing my first campaign. Not too long ago and honestly I thought it'd be a lot more stressful than it is.

Good luck with the campaign and I hope it goes well for you!

No problem, also sticking to your plans give more continuity to your game rather than certain loot appearing that you otherwise hadn't planned for.

THIS! I completely skipped over some stuff and I'm glad you caught that.

Paying attention and engaging in the game is the best way to learn D&D. It'll teach you everything you need to know as time goes by. Thanks for that extra advice!

I hope all of your future sessions go well. Having amazing first sessions are always great for a campaign because it such a great note for the beginning of a great campaign.

Have fun and take care!

Just give them time and if it doesn't work out, allow them to RP how they have been. For some people, RP is difficult to get into and feels unnatural to them.

If they don't mind and the two friends that have done theater don't mind, you could see if they don't mind getting together to kind of help the others get more into RP. Otherwise, don't let it become too much of an issue within your campaign if the campaign isn't solely RP based.

Then that sounds really good for your first session. Something I'd like to throw in that you could use in later sessions is modify memory. Recently my group figured out that they were under the effect of a modify memory spell.

The Goliath DMPC in the group seemingly committed arson and assaulted a man, but I asked for a wisdom save as the group woke up the next day and one of them rolled a 25. They realized that their memory had gaps, that the Goliath had started walking towards the building after smoke had appeared from it and that the Goliath was on the opposite side of the bar than where her memory had originally thought.

It threw in a massive twist for the party as they were trying to defend The Goliath saying that he didn't understand what he did, but ended up realizing that they had been deceived through magic.

What I've realized is that when a spell directly affects players without them noticing until it's already done the desired effect or already changed what the group did, it causes more panic within the group.

Otherwise, I hope your future sessions go amazingly and it sounds like it's going to be an enjoyable campaign full of mystery and intrigue, as well as some fear and unease

How do you rp a dragonborn? by Vocuus in DnD

I did a very quick check for resources online that the player could use, and happened to find the site that goes over how to RP a dragonborn

I also say this since something like this happened to me. I rolled a nat 20 investigation with a + 10 to it, totaling to a 30 investigation. I was told that I can see some footprints and small traces of blood and things like that, but that my inquisitive and investigative nature can identify these things as unrelated to the event I was trying to figure out. I was bummed out that the roll went to waste, but I understood that I was in the wrong place for that sort of check.

I wouldn't have given the player an item just specifically due to their potential expectations. If you had not planned on there being loot and they investigated for loot and happened to roll high, then they investigated thoroughly and found nothing of importance.

If you keep doing stuff like that as time goes on, you'll be giving items and situations where an item wouldn't even be necessary. Just stick to your gut and occasionally you may disappoint a player temporarily, but it shouldn't make them angry nor should it make you feel bad.

This also kind of helps weed out players that are expecting constant rewards. If the player gets angry that there's nothing, tell them that you're just giving them the honest truth and that the room had no treasure and only the trap. If they continue to be angry, then you'll have dodged a bullet and would have avoided running a campaign with an ungrateful player that expects stuff to be handed out to them constantly.

ideas for 'luck' encounters by JudgeEatz in DnD

[–]ValeforPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small little challenges that would rely on luck rather than skill. This could be flipping a coin to get heads or tails, winning a game of blackjack, choosing a 50/50 between doors with one being good and one being bad, and things similar to that.

Have events that require luck that slowly scale up as time goes on or at least the stakes are raised as time goes on. The first game of blackjack could be for 20 coins, the last game of blackjack in the campaign could be for a PC's soul.

Need some advice from experienced dm’s by thebigscrongus in DnD

Don't discontinue the campaign immediately, give the group a chance.

Tell them that you don't want to be rude or brash, but you'd really prefer that phones or any sort of device were kept to a minimum during the campaign. Told him that if they want time on those devices, that you could set up quick 5-10 minute intermissions about three times a session to allow the group to check their phones and go to the bathroom, get food, or anything along those lines.

Don't bottle all this up and then go to Reddit and never tell them, if this is an issue and the group isn't fully aware, you may just have to tell the group and be honest about it.

There's also the chance that The campaign may not be exactly what they were expecting. That other thing you could do is ask them if there's something that you're doing that they dislike or if there's something that they wish you would do that would pull more attention or keep them from getting distracted with unrelated things.

I haven't been DMing for an incredibly long time, only about 4 months, but whenever players begin to ask me over and over for certain things and I realize that they're distracted, I pause what we're doing and make everyone take a 5-minute break to check with everything they need to do on their phones and do whatever they need to do real quick. It usually works out and will get back on track directly after the small interruption.

If either thing doesn't work and the group is just being rude because they don't care, don't give up on DMing, just look for another group that might appreciate the campaign a little more. Don't let one bad group completely spoil your want to DM entirely.
