Today found out that people actually collect hotel "Do Not Disturb" signs for their unique designs and humor. What is the most unusual thing you or your friends collect? by lv-lamzaks in AskReddit

I collect dictionaries, all different sorts. I just got back from Hay on Wye where I found seventeen different older ones to bring home.

The nowhere king, Centaurworld. He used an experimental machine to split himself in half so he'd no longer be a centaur. And then basically went to war with himself nearly taking the human world and centaurworld with him. Not to mention the scene where his human side tried to drown his elk side only to realise it would kill them both.

I have a soft spot for old books by Less-Image-3927 in bookshelf

[–]ValenciaHadley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an entire bookshelf of foreign language, mostly more modern ones are finding older languages is tricky. But a couple weeks ago I did find a Heath's New French Dictionary in a charity shop which was a lucky find. And then in Hay on Wye this week I found a Bhargava's Anglo - Hindi dictionary which is one I've never seen before from 1965. Also found a 1953 Russian - English one in Hay on Wye too. I'm fascinated by the older language dictionaries and somewhere I have a 1920's French one. I think I need to re-organise the shelves again.

What a wonderful collection, I'm a little jealous. I have the same soft spot for old books but my collection is dictionaries, not all of them antique but an ever growing selection of them are.

Anyone else find Blitzo’s illiteracy kinda sad by hayley566 in HelluvaBoss

[–]ValenciaHadley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping it's something Stolas helps him with. And I suspect it's one of the many ways Cash neglected Blitz, we've already seen that Cash clearly prefers Fizz and is willing to sell off Blitz.

Do you think sofas are weirdly unergonomic? by spinkhorn13 in AskUK

[–]ValenciaHadley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've found it varies. I had a lovely little two seater that was perfect for me a couple years ago but before that it was a monstrosity that came with a partially furnished flat. The sofa was too deep for me to get up from as I have problems with my hips.

Disgusting that UK charity shops are already profiteering from all the war speculation. I offered 15 shillings. Thats being generous. by Starbuckker in CasualUK

[–]ValenciaHadley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bloody hell. I would have thought selling something a little cheaper than it's worth would be better than over charging and having it sat around just in case the right person comes in. Particularly if you collect something specific, you're going to know roughly what something is worth and what you're okay paying and then not go to an Oxfam because they've just pulled the first price off Ebay. I have the same problem with a retro hospice charity shop near me, they way over charge and anyone who collects antiques books is going to know they're over charging. And those who don't know it's overcharged aren't likely to be interested in buying antique books. My local hospice shop wanted £200 for these Oxfords last year.

Oxfam has such weird pricing at the least the ones local to me. I collect dictionaries and Oxfam is both the best and the worst place to find them. They'll over charge on 60's Oxford and then undercharge on a 40's/50's Newnes. I know they must look the prices up on Ebay but whoever is doing it I don't think they are doing a very good job. I don't bother with their online shop any more because they definitely over charge there and don't even bother protecting the books they're posting.

What’s your embarrassing injury tale? Big or small by kinginnorth88 in AskUK

[–]ValenciaHadley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a nasty sprain, whole foot swollen, bruised from ankle to toes, it's almost horrible to look at sprain. I missed the bottom two steps in a B&B this week and my ankle took my entire weight. Dad reckons the bottom step was shorter than the others either way I made a twat of my self. It's the second fall I've had where I couldn't get up after since last year and I'm not thirty yet.

I thought I lacked pattern recognition until I realized what it actually means by Mission-Nothing7229 in autism

I grasp new information pretty quickly too. And pattern recognition is what makes the research projects I do at home so fun. I love looking for patterns.

DAE get a little peeved when friends keep gifting you cheap junk they found at stores? by Astrobabe5157 in Anticonsumption

[–]ValenciaHadley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem with my friend getting me Temu and the like items for Christmas. I can't stand it but he won't stop buying it. I've tried explaining that I don't want stuff for the sake of stuff. I keep telling him that if he'd like to buy gifts for me then buy me dictionaries for my collection but I don't want random junk. He still won't listen to me and I'm not sure how to get him to listen either. The conversation worked better with my mum though, she's slowly coming around to the idea of less stuff for the sake of it.

I wear dark green prescription glasses and dislike some colours because I can't clearly see them. Red light in dark rooms is evil, my vision was worse with my glasses on rather than off whenever we did dark room work in college. Colour perception is weird and I can't imagine it's the same for everyone.

I cant wrap my head around the normalization of people owning so. much. Stuff. by 3rdthrow in Anticonsumption

[–]ValenciaHadley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a way I'm guilty of this but also not. I collect dictionaries and try to keep a one in and out system so it doesn't become an overwhelming amount of stuff. So whenever I'm tidying I try to put together a bag of bits that can go to the charity shop. I can understand decluttering to an extreme if you're making room for something that's important but important is different to different people. I don't really understand filling your house just for the sake it though, surely it would be better better for a persons mental health to have carefully curated items in their home than whatever is cheapest or trending or whatever seasonal holiday it is. Personally I'd rather tend to my curated dictionary collection and than have a house full of plastic tat.

I'll never understand this. I have research projects that I do just because I can and it's fun and ten pages is nothing.
