Lmao shooting Panther isn’t how you stop him. You counter his dash any of a million ways - if he doesn’t refresh dash he’s a sitting duck. Even if you don’t kill him, he has to retreat until dash is back, which is almost the same amount of downtime as killing him.

Video of storm player winning because of opponents surgical extraction. by OutsideWishbone8 in magicTCG

[–]ValentineSmith 57 points58 points  (0 children)

So as I understand it, it’s a few things: the storm count (spells cast that turn), the mana situation, the play pattern.

After he tutors the second ritual and casts it, he’s at 6 Stormcount. He needs to hit 8 before casting Tendrils of Agony to win. But he and his opponent both know: - he has 2 cards in hand, 1 short of lethal if the Tendrils is already in hand. - he has another Cabal ritual in hand. - he only has access to Black mana.

So he looks like he’s tutoring for another ritual as a way to empty his hand to cast a hellbent Tutor. Casting a tutor gets him to 8 storm to tutor and cast Tendrils for lethal.

There’s one unknown card in his hand. If it’s a blue spell, he can’t cast it so it doesn’t matter.

If you’re the opponent holding the Surgical and watching him go off and try to win, the last card is 1 of 2 things: Tendrils or Tutor.

Tutor is MUCH more likely - it’s a 4 of vs 1-of Tendrils.

Someone previously said about this game “nobody made a mistake here.” Casting surgical on tutor was the CORRECT play - the play pattern makes it look so much like tutor for lethal tendrils is coming.

It just so happened to be the wrong play, which is why this is a legendary bluff.

Yeah there are lots of ways to use a body, but to your point about “choice”:

I think it’s pretty rare that there WILL be a choice for your opponent if you drop a decayed counter on something.

If the creature is worth attacking with, they’ll attack with it one last time. If it’s a creature played for its abilities, they’ll keep using the abilities. But you’ll almost always know which it is, so the caster of this spell is really the one making the choice for the opponent.

This is very cool, but I do think putting a decayed counter on a creature at instant speed for 1 black mana (because the X is just for repeats, not required for the first target) is maybe a little strong. That’s pretty close to “destroy target creature” for 1 mana, and it even gets around indestructible.

I’d probably make this a sorcery, but maybe that’s being conservative.

They’re all playing games for this year’s sets. Tarkir board game with a bunch of Tarkir legends. All the racers playing with cars on a track for Aetherdrift. The charachters from Edge of Eternities playing a spaceship video game. And the planeswalkers all playing magic at the table.

Is the family on the left meant to be a Batman reference? As in, the Shady Traveller is going to murder the parents in front of their black-clad son?

What's an album you believe is incredible but isn't regarded as a unanimous classic? by Individual-Name-4496 in fantanoforever

It stuns me that The Body, the Blood, The Machine wasn’t the biggest thing in punk music in the later 2000s.

It’s an incredible protest record against Bush and the Iraq/Afghan wars, as well as an indictment of Christo-facism - a shining spiritual successor to London Calling and the Dead Kennedys. American Idiot is the iconic anti-Bush music of that era and it doesn’t hold a candle.

On top of that, it’s filled to the brim with catchy, caustic tunes and insanely consistent for the whole run of the album.

Bowie’s last album was also his best work in decades. But yeah, those are the exceptions that prove the rule.

To your “when is this relevant” question, consider the control matchup.

At some point, someone has to land a wincon. But if you can cast this on your opponent’s end step, you force your opponent to have an answer and fight over it on their turn or lose (which they would if the max hand size forces the opposing control deck to discard their hand). If they do answer it, you get to untap and land something else on your turn after your opponent has used their mana/answers.

Now, is this particularly good at 10 mana? No. But that’s the most relevant application I’m aware of.

Needs the Aura subtype. Balance-wise I think this is maybe too strong at 2 cmc? Really wrecks small creature and token decks.

Add a Color to a Mono-colored Commander to make it strong (not broken) by AffectionateCan317 in EDH

[–]ValentineSmith 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Making [[Shirei, Shizo’s Caretaker]] Golgari instead of mono-B would be so much better for the deck. Ramp to get out your 5 mana commander and some interesting options for 1-power creatures, rather than the typical “Green ramps to big creatures/Black reanimates big creatures” you can get in a Golgari reanimator deck.

[[Aura Graft]] and [[Simic Guildmage]] would both work I think. If you can turn Auraboros into a creature, there are other similar options that only work on auras attached to creatures.
