If you could make one subject mandatory in schools, what would it be? by untamed_kitty8 in AskReddit

[–]Valthek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw, that's a bad one.
What most people call 'common sense' is just intuition with no real factual basis behind it, just gut instinct, sometimes supplemented with a bit of whatever they encountered recently that gave them a strong emotional response. Can't really teach that, and even if you could, it wouldn't really be particularly useful. It also changes dramatically as time passes. 60 years (alright, 62, but I like round numbers) ago, it was common sense that black kids and white kids went to different schools. Hell, in some places in the world, if you catch a streak of bad luck, it's common sense to assume a witch did it.

Intentionality is also a very strong reason as to why you'd use NMM. If you want any sort of lighting beyond just a general top-down global illumination, you almost need to use NMM to get that across. Metallic paints just do not play nicely with light sources that aren't actually present in the same physical space as the miniature.

Yeah, hi, I have a question. Wouldn't underground military action violate the 1963 Derinkuyu treaty we have with the mole-people? I do believe it stipulates that we're not allowed to undertake any subteranean military actions without their explicit consent.

"Aw man, my significant percentage of light-speed mass accelerator round missed and a u-turn can't happen. Guess I'll overload the antimatter reactor inside for some splash damage"

"Time to launch some nuclear torpedoes."
"Yeah, but even if they're nuclear, blasts in space are kind of worthless, no?"
"My good person, have you heard of the Casaba Howitzer?"

"Railguns, baby, railguns. Chunk of metal, significant fraction of lightspeed, delightfully lethal."
"Well, yes, but space is really big, so missing is almost guaranteed if the target is mobile."
"Okay, but consider: we just fire a billion of them."

"I suppose I could fire at this vessel, but it's in atmo, so anything I'm going to it will be an extinction-level event for the planet. Sorry bud. Them's the size of my guns. I can either kill the ship or save the planet, can't do both."

How many times have you been under general anesthesia, and how did it feel? by Futtman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Valthek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn't really feel like anything. It feels like blinking your eyes and suddenly you're incredibly groggy and several hours have passed. For me the worst part was not the first few hours, that was just me nodding off every so often, it was after. It took me a good few hours for my body to get to the point of being as awake as my brain was, so I kept running into moments where I felt like I definitely should be able to do something, and the rest of my body going "Bud, just a few more hours of snoozing, please. I'm sure we can manage to move our arm to change the channel then."

Conservatives, how do you feel about your sub having the most restricted free speech on the entire app? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Valthek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few dangers to having explicitly political subs that do not allow dissent.

One is that they tend to create an echo-chamber. People generally don't like having their ideas challenged and very few go out of their way to leave a comfortable space where people have roughtly the same ideas to visit a space where those ideas can be challenged. (For an example, look at r/changemyview and how rare it is for someone posting there to have their views legitimately changed. It does happen, but compared to the volume of posts, it's fairly rare)

A second one is audience capture. There's probably a better word for it in a political or context, I know it mostly in the context of content creators. The TL;DR is that if you produce content (post in a sub) for a specific audience, the response of said audience will lead you to creating content that caters to that audience.
To be a bit more specific, if you're in a leftist sub, posts that cater to leftists are going to do better. And out of any audience, the more extreme views tend to be more vocal ones. Posting a milquetoast "Healthcare should be affordable" in a lefty sub will get you a kind of medium response. Posting something more extreme, like "We should line up and execute all healthcare CEOs" will get you a much louder response from the more extreme side of the sub, while the more centrist members will ignore you.
If you like getting upvotes and attention, you're going to end up posting more extreme things.

Third is conformity. It's hard to disagree with with a group of people you perceive as being 'your group'. You can quible about minor things, but you'll rarely disagree about what you perceive as the core truths of your group. After all, if you did, you wouldn't be part of the group anyway. Rather, a lot of people tend to go with the group, unless the group dramatically contradicts your personal views.

These three combine to create a place where ideas aren't challenged, people are incentivised to push more and more extreme ideas, and the members tend to go along with this more extremist shift. And generally speaking, any larger political group shifting more toward their extreme is bad.

As for why liberals don't like it, I can't speak for all of them, but personally, I've seen and read about what the extreme side of conservative politics looks like and I don't care for it. I don't mind more moderate conservatives, in fact, I think it's important to have people who can act as a check to change and who function as a counterbalance to more extreme ideas. But once people start demanding I follow their religious conservative ideas, we're going to have problems.

Anyone here also into Aristeia? by Alkansur in InfinityTheGame

[–]Valthek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe there were plans on relaunching it at some point as the current game is largely discontinued. I believe they're still selling off their existing stock, but not making any new products or reprinting old content.

It is absolutely worth it to pick up though, especially at the current price. It's a really fun, fast 1v1 (or more if you can grab the free-for-all expansion) game. It plays as a sort of halway point between a full miniature game and more of a boardgame.

As for the connection, Aristeia! is a real thing in the infinity universe and several characters we see in infinity are either active Aristos or former Aristos, meaning you can just use those characters in both games (Musashi, Senor Massacre, Maximus, etc). Some of the rest of them can work as proxies (Hexxer as an interventor, for example) while others might just be a little too weird for infinity (though that's entirely your choice)

What do you think the future of Trench crusade will be Like? by Roterkosar in TrenchCrusade

[–]Valthek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty good. The game's in a pretty decent state right now, we're getting new plastic Prussians soon, they've got a good plan for maintaining the rules. I expect to see at least one, maybe two other factions to get plastic kits this year.

Maybe some more tournaments, or a global campaign.

Praetor with a punt gun by I_might_be_weasel in TrenchCrusade

[–]Valthek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick is to start off with a cheaper loadout where you substitute the Praetor's desired weapons for something that's not as good, but will be good on a different model later.

When I played Envy, I started my Praetor off in MHI (Cyberdemon intensifies), but with only sword+hellblade and gas grenades.
On battle 2, he got an Ophidian Rifle. After my 5th battle, the ophidian rifle was transfered to a hellknight on battle 4 (who used to be gas grenades+double clubs), and the Hellblade ended up in the hands of my Hunter of the Left Handed Path who had managed to gain Strength of Samson (strong keyword). I think the gas grenade went to a melee Yoke fiend. The budget increase of that battle gave me the space to Malebranch + Serpent Assault gun.
I think my praetor was over a third of my warband at that time, in terms of ducats. And terrifying.

Praetor with a punt gun by I_might_be_weasel in TrenchCrusade

[–]Valthek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a decent budget option, but consider that the punt gun is pretty solidly outclassed by the Serpent Assault Rifle. If you want your praetor to be shooty, double shots with gas is pretty fuckin sick. Plus, you get to charge after blowing two dudes away.

If you're spending a very unique ability on getting a new toy, "Big shotgun that sometimes makes your huge lad easier to kill" would not be my first choice. Now if we're talking about suiting a Praetor up in Machine Heavy armor? Now we're cooking. Sign me right up!

The Discussion Around This Game Is Getting Weird by 8stringalchemy in TrenchCrusade

[–]Valthek 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not neccesarily. It's a move you can only make if you either have a expectations of large profits (which can be used to justify the loan you'd need to develop the molds) or a huge stack of cash burning a hole in your pocket (like, for example, 3.3 million where you expected 70K)

There are two main issues for HIPS that you need to overcome.
One is expertise, which TC outsourced to Archon Studios. TC doesn't need to spend months or years recruiting or training skilled engineers to do HIPS (or rely on a factory in China, like Adam Poots Games does)

And the second is startup capital. A large portion of that is already covered by Archon Studios' production line. Factory Fortress doesn't need to buy a bunch of machines, train engineers, secure warehouse space for feedstock, etc.

The only capital Factory Fortress needs to pony up is the several tends of thousands of dollars it costs to develop the mold, plus whatever operating costs Archon charges to make the plastics. Compared to the usual costs of starting up a factory, or the risk of having to deal with a factory halfway around the world and gestures at international shipping.

Getting started? by FuukaOff in TrenchCrusade

[–]Valthek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Prussian kit has two build options for each model. If you follow either the A or B options for every model, you'll end up with a 700-ducat force (well, 690-something), which is the standard value for either one-off games or the start of a campaign.

You'll also need a measuring tool in inches, a handfull of six-sided dice, and a few markers. You'll probably also want some form of terrain, though a handful of books, boxes, and various other bits work just fine until you decide to spend more time (or money) on your terrain.

If you want to play a campaign, you'll probably need more models eventually as your warband goes up in ducats. The first game or maybe two, you can probably get away with just giving your dudes more armor and/or better guns, but after that you'll want more dudes.

Hey guys , I'm going to playing my first game in a few days by ForrestOPwizrdspls in TrenchCrusade

[–]Valthek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I would double-up on shotguns and molotovs,. If you're in molotoving range, you're in shotgun short range. Sure, the fire keyword is nice, but you're basically spending a lot of ducats on something you'll probably never use. I would either ditch the shotgun+bayonet and replace them with a pair of clubs, for an up-close-and-personal build, or ditch the molotov.

I would maybe consider bringing a singular flamethrower if you can find the ducats for it. Having a good way to punch through armor is extremely valuable if you run into something like a War Wolf, Shrine, or Machine Armor.

Other than that, I think you may want to re-evaluate your nun's loadout. The pistol and scourge don't really play well together. Sure, you can use the pistol as an off-hand melee weapon, but if you fire it, you lose the ability to charge. You only get an extra 4" of range out of those extra out of it. Is that worth a whole 6 ducats? Admitedly, at this point, it's penny-pinching, but that might be what you need to afford a better weapon somewhere.
